When you enter the car park in Biscarosse-Plage on the Silver Coast in France, you press a button, receive a receipt with a code and enter through a barrier that opens. To exit through the barrier, the machine reads the receipt and tells you how much to pay. It sounds good, but it didn't really work, so to speak ...
Motorhome parking in Biscarosse-Plage
The car park in Biscarosse-Plage at Silver Coast in France is huge. The site is located among the trees in the forest, and from here you have a very short walk down to the beach.
In the summer it's probably full of caravans, but in December it's completely deserted. So deserted, in fact, that it almost felt a little scary as the dense darkness descended. But that wasn't our problem. The problem appeared when we left the next morning ...
Everything was closed
We had to pay 8 euros to check out through the barrier, which the machine wanted in cards or coins. We tried BOTH our cards, but the machine didn't want them. And we didn't have 8 euros in coins... We set off to look for places to change money - but just in time. everything was closed, and not a single person in the neighbourhood.
After about half an hour, two French guys came by in a car and tried to help us, but they didn't succeed either. What we did? Peter grabbed a pole and pulled it loose and then we scrambled out with the campervan ...

Henny says:
We came across a similar system in Germany, but there you loaded the card with what you thought you needed and then it was automatically charged for electricity, utilities, water and so on. When we then left, the machine spat out the number of euros that remained unused on the card and the barrier was opened. Very fair and easy we thought.

Yes, you must not be helpless....you did a good job. A tip is to collect 1,2€ coins in a small jar as spare cash. Many pitches... especially in Germany, but also elsewhere.... are paid with coins.
Have a good journey.

Henny, we think this kind of system is great too! The only thing missing this time was the ability to pay with banknotes... or somewhere to make change...!

Ama de casa says:
So you went camping? Ajabaja!!!
😉
We travelled home through Germany once in the 90s. After many ups and downs, we found a campsite. Nobody at the reception. We asked the "residents" of the campsite if they took cards, or French francs (we had no German marks). They narrowed their eyes at us and said suspiciously:
- The French????
When we told them that we were Swedish, they happily told us that the people running the campsite would come in late the next day, so if we just packed up and left in the morning, everything would work out for the best.
🙂
So we've also been poaching...
