Today we looked around the Spanish city of Granada, located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. This is a city that feels both historic and young at the same time, and here we enjoyed an outdoor lunch in the February sun.

The road to Granada
We drove from Torre del Mar on the Spanish sunny coast and headed for Granada, up in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The sun was shining when we left and we didn't have to worry about snow on the way to Granada. However, it was very windy! Tunnels are interspersed with viaducts among the mountains, and on the viaducts you can feel the wind pulling the motorhome, which has a fairly large windbreak ...
Granada - both old and young city
Granada has about 240 thousand inhabitants, of which about 60 thousand are students. People were already living in the area in the 6th century BC, and the Alhambra castle and fortress were built in the 13th and 14th centuries. In the old Albaicín neighbourhood, much remains from the Moorish rule before 1492. So Granada is an old city, but at the same time it feels very young because of all the students!
Alhambra
The Alhambra is undoubtedly the biggest attraction in Granada. The palace was built from the 1250s to the late 1300s and consists of gardens and buildings from the last Islamic dynasty in Spain. Today, the Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Generalife gardens and the Albiacin neighbourhood. As well as being an interesting attraction, the site offers fantastic views of both Granada and the Sierra Nevada.
The old town of Albaicín
We walked around the old neighbourhood of Albaicín today, with its narrow alleys. Then we had lunch at an outdoor restaurant in Plaza Bib Rambla - touristy but still very nice in the sun. There was a seafood paella and a beer before we continued shopping in the newer neighbourhoods. Those of you wondering about the weather: During the day it is around 15 degrees and nice in the sun. At night the temperatures creep down to an occasional plus degree.
Meeting a childhood friend
Johanna and I have been friends since I was four years old and she was three. We grew up in the same neighbourhood in Lund. Today Johanna is a researcher in limnology (the study of freshwater) and right now there is a big international scientific conference on limnology and oceanography going on here in Granada. So where is Johanna? Well, here in Granada of course!
We met outside Johanna's hotel, and then it was a very nice evening with food and beer at a small restaurant here in town. It was also quite late, because of course we had a lot to talk about!
Camping Reina Isabel
We are staying at a campsite called Reina Isabel, which is located in La Zubia, on the outskirts of Granada. This is a pleasant campsite located next to a small centre. There are buses to the centre of Granada every 15 minutes, so it's easy to get to and from the city. The campsite now costs, in the 2015 low season, 18 euros per day with ACSI discount. WiFi is available at a tiny extra cost (so low that we actually thought they were joking).

Nice that the sun shone on you! Down here on the plate in Roquetas de Mar we had UV index 4 yesterday and 21 ° warm, until 17 o'clock, now it simply gets warmer, soon time for a break. But up at the French border it's snowing and it's nothing for us ;-/

The second comment has not arrived 🙁 I have neither received an e-mail that it has arrived nor does it exist in WordPress.
I myself have experienced that comments have not arrived and if I write a long comment, I usually copy it before I send it. Just in case something happens.
It looks like an incredibly beautiful day in Granada! And seafood paella sounds delicious! I have barely had time to read any blogs lately and barely had time to write my own posts. Will try to take an evening next week to catch up on the blog here. In any case, you seem to have a good time!

Helena, thank you for your comment! Sometimes there are problems on wordpress blogs when I type in the URL. When I do not, it usually goes well...
