Finally, there was enough of a break in the rain to get out of the campervan and explore Peniscola! A long promenade runs along the waterfront, along which there are countless restaurants, cafes and bike hire shops. Right now, in the grey and rainy March weather, it feels very off-season here, but when spring and summer arrive, it will be a great holiday destination.

Peniscola in Spain
Peniscola is a town in the province of Provincía de Castelló in the region of Valencia, in the eastern part of Spain. It is located about 30 kilometres east of Madrid.
The beach in Peniscola
We went to Peniscola because we were told that it would be so nice here, and it certainly can be. It's a little, a little hard to imagine when the rain whips relentlessly from the side, but we can see that there is a long fine sandy beach here. We can also imagine that all these outdoor restaurants, cafés and ice cream parlours are packed during the high season.
This is a very nice place and one that many of our friends have visited. We really think that this is a holiday destination for those who are looking for sun and swimming for a week. We did experience rain and that is not ok, so we hope we can give it another chance in the future.
13th century castle
At one end of the long beach is a 13th century castle, which of course we visited! The castle was built by the Knights Templar between 1294 and 1307, and was home to Pope Benedict XIII in the 15th century. The castle was restored and re-walled in 1960 when it was used in the film El Cid.
Camping La Volta
We have on camping La VoltaThis is a simple but pleasant motorhome campsite that looks a bit like a caravan park. Here you pay 7 euros/night plus another 3 euros/night if you want electricity. It rained a lot when we were here, but we were still happy.

Mmmm! Fiiint!
The dragon almost looks like a work by Gaudi (who you can see more amazing creations of in Barcelona later! - if you haven't already).

Bosse and Gerd says:
One consolation - albeit small - is that from Thursday this week and at least until Wednesday next week there will be great weather again with completely blue skies and 20-22 degrees in the shade!

Ditte says:
In good weather, Peniscola is probably well worth a visit. The view of the harbour was really nice. Hopefully the sun will return and you can have a couple of sunny days.

Nice with a break in the weather, I think. Beautiful view of the harbour.

Sandora, it's nice here, and certainly nicer in the sun!
Anja, yes we have been to Barcelona once before. Like Gaudi's church very much and also other things we saw by him, like Casa Batlló!
Bosse and Gerd, we look forward to it!
🙂
Ditte, it's nice here and, as I said, a great place on a sunny and warm day!
Steve, yes the motorhome feels a bit small after a few rainy days...

Great that you finally got a break with a break! You are really worth it!
Superb promenade and the last picture of the harbour is incredibly delicious.
I also like the mosaic dragon. Many Spanish harbour towns have benches/walls and toy animals in mosaic. I think it's great!
Oh witch - well, it's almost Maundy Thursday. This witch has some foresight before she flies off to Blåkulla;-)

Nice that you avoided the rain because just when you are going to make an excursion, the weather affects a lot. Lovely view even though it was not brilliant sun!

How cosy it looks! You have to stop that, because the list of destinations not yet visited just gets longer and longer the longer you travel. 🙂

BP, I agree that the mosaic is nice! It's good that you cleared up the witch thing, as I had some doubts...!
😉
Marina, yes haha, that's what it felt like... Still rainy, but better weather is coming of course!
Znogge, the weather does have an impact! But at least it's nice when it's not raining, so you can go outside the door...
😉
Marie, haha, there are soooo many places to visit... it's hard to keep that list short?
