In 2014, the number of motorhomes and caravans in Sweden increased by 13 per cent - more than any other country in Europe! Motorhomes are becoming increasingly popular, with more people buying last year choosing a motorhome than a caravan.
One million Swedes holiday in motorhomes or caravans
More than a million Swedes go on holiday in a caravan or motorhome every year and more and more people are choosing the comfortable life of a motorhome. For the past three years, more new motorhomes have been registered than caravans, and the trend looks set to continue. This is according to new figures from the Swedish Caravan Industry Association.
We can attest to the popularity of the motorhome lifestyle, especially down here in southern Europe. We see motorhomes on the roads everywhere! During the winter months, we saw many Swedish-registered motorhomes. Otherwise, we have mainly seen motorhomes from Germany, France, Holland, Belgium and Spain.
Figures on caravans and motor caravans 2014
- Newly registered motorhomes in Sweden: 3967 units
- Newly registered caravans in Sweden: 3638 units
- Motorhomes in Sweden: 74 343 units
- Caravans in Sweden: 281 321 units
- Motorhomes in Europe: 1 556 900 units
- Caravans in Europe: 3 873 000 units

BP says:
Never a caravan, just think of pocket parking there;-)
Motorhomes are a perfect and relatively cheap way to travel. It's like taking your home with you.

You are contributing to the boom, I guess.

I'm currently taking part in this year's step challenge in the opposite direction to yours, from Marseille to Barcelona. Watch out! I'm getting close: 14,098 steps so far today... 🙂 ...

Lars Permeln says:
It's great that the number of motorhomes in Sweden is increasing and that more and more people are choosing to travel by motorhome. However, it is important that society prepares with appropriate places to accommodate motorhome tourists before problems and irritation arise.

Ama de casa, haha, I happen to have very little knowledge of it.

BP, a caravan doesn't work for us either... partly because of the pocket parking issue.
😉
Steve, hehe, who knows...
😉
Anja, that sounds like a lot of walking! And over 14,000 steps wasn't bad! (I've tried it a few times so I know it takes a lot to get up to that!) Go, go, go!
Lars Parmeln, can only agree, on both points! There is a lot of pressure, so we really need places where you can stand without disturbing anyone!
Rantamor, oops, always tricky when you know different people. What kind of motorhome does he want, and why do you want to keep old Leffe?
Rolle and Carina, yes we also understand, when you get stuck you don't want to stop doing this...!

I belong to the crowd that has muddy tested a motorhome, but we have talked about trying to rent one sometime to test, so we'll see....

I understand that! A caravan doesn't seem as convenient...

Marina, glad you've been thinking about it and hope it will happen at some point!

Znogge, caravans can certainly be excellent, but in slightly different contexts. If you stand still all summer at a campsite, for example, and want the car free to drive.

Linnea Edmark says:
Amazingly, I have never slept in a motorhome, or travelled in one for that matter. A few times I have slept in caravans in the owner's garden but that's it. I have slept much more in tents. It is very cosy to camp, I like the simple life where not so much stuff fits 🙂.
Greetings Linnea in Bavaria
PS: I found all your comments on my blog so now I have fixed so you can write with the link to yours!

I think a motorhome seems much more flexible and you have more comfort. But I have only tried a week in a motorhome on New Zealand and it was a good form of accommodation and easy to get around.
Have lived in a stationary caravan in France and in a caravan for a week in the Swedish mountains. So experience is minimal...

Linnea, I had never slept in a caravan or motorhome before we got our 2009 either... and surely the slightly simpler and more stripped down life is quite nice? Great that you found the comments!
🙂
Ditte, it was in New Zealand that we tried a motorhome for the first time too, and that's when we got hooked!
