We will soon tell you about the Easter celebrations here in Tarragona in Spain, but first we have to tell you about this cosy and interesting city! Tarragona is located about 10 kilometres south of Barcelona and is a city with a long history. In Roman times, this was the most important city of the Roman Empire on the Iberian Peninsula, and the ruins from the Roman era can really be seen here. just everywhere.

Historic Tarragona
It is no coincidence that Tarragona is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking around the city, it is impossible to miss the remains of the Roman era. They are everywhere and it's very clear that modern Tarragona is built on the basis of the Roman Empire. on top of its ancient predecessor.
In fact, the emperor of the Roman Empire, Augustus, found Tarragona such a stunningly beautiful city that he chose to move here from Rome in 26 BC. The Romans made it the capital of their possessions in the Iberian Peninsula, meaning that much of what is now Spain was ruled from the city's stately palaces. Now you can walk around and see all the remains, including a large amphitheatre from the 2nd century.
A cosy city
Tarragona is a charming city to walk around, and there are lots of nice outdoor cafes. When we take a chance on restaurants in Spain, we are not always satisfied. On the contrary, we have many times ended up in rather boring places, but for once we got a really good three-course lunch.
Lunch in Tarragona
The starter was steamed mussels, followed by pork fillet with gorgonzola sauce and grilled vegetables. The meal ended with a really good cheesecake. For this we had to pay 15 euros each. It is certainly a bit more expensive than the three-course lunches that you can get for nine euros in some places, but it was also much better!
Camping in Tarragona
We live with our motorhome on a camping in Tarragona called Torre de la Mora. The campsite is nicely situated on a sandy beach and you can easily reach the town by bus.

Beautiful and really nice!
Spontaneously, your first picture reminds me of the beach view of Playa Poniente in Benidorm - seen from the Finestrat mountain (ok, minus the skyscrapers).
In Tarragona's city centre is a copy of Alicante's ditto (ok then, minus the ruins then). In other words, strongly favoured!
So much fun to follow your blog:-)

Ditte says:
Nice to have a look at Tarragona and read a little more about the city. Maybe there will be a visit there at some point. There is much to see around Spain and of different characters.
Wonderful that you also got good food and spotted a good restaurant that may not be a "tourist trap", I believe in "you get what you pay for" and so with most things.
I can think of Västerlånggatan and Drottninggatan where there are many tourists and many very bad restaurants. But the visitors don't know that. If you go just a few alleys/streets away, they often serve much better food.
We wish you a happy Easter.

Ditte, we have discussed exactly the same thing when it comes to restaurants! Especially those around Drottninggatan, where you would never go... where many tourists probably end up! We wish you a happy Easter!
Ladies Abroad, definitely worth a detour from Barcelona!
Lars and Inger, glad to hear that you appreciate some historical facts! We often think that places become more interesting if you read a little. We wish you a nice Easter!

Thanks for the tip! Have been to Barcelona and northern Spain and Castilla y Léon but completely missed that Tarragona would be worth a visit. Looks like a nice city for a weekend with both city and beach (if you can get there easily from Sweden).

A-mum, we can really recommend Tarragona, which surprised us. I suspect you have to go to Barcelona and from there to Tarragona (about an hour I think), but I don't really know....
