Filitosa, in Corsica. Filitosa has been inhabited by the Neolithic era and People were in Corsica already 8000 years ago, to get some perspective... Egyptian civilisation emerged 5000 years ago and the Roman Empire was founded almost 3000 years ago. Come to Filitosa in Corsica!
Megalithic monument
The site contains a number of megalithic monuments, i.e. antiquities in the form of roughly carved stone blocks. The 2-3 metre high monuments represent warriors, and most appear to have been erected around 3500 - 4000 years ago. The oldest finds at the site, such as arrowheads and pots, date from around 3300 BC, and many of the monuments were erected around 1500 BC. If you hear the word Torreans, it was the people who lived there long ago, like in a fairy tale.
The site was discovered in 1946, by the man who owns the land, and now there is a large area of excavated stone monuments called Menhirar. What are Menhirs? They are large stones that have been carved to resemble warriors or people. The most well-crafted warriors stand in a ring around an olive tree.
It is staggering that it has been so long since they were erected! You have to put it in the context of where we are today and what they have contributed to development, because we all do that every day. I hope they keep looking because there is much more hidden on the owner's land.

Visiting Filitosa
It cost us 7 euros/person to visit the site and even though it's mostly "old stones" it's quite fascinating! What kind of people lived here so many thousands of years ago? How did they get here? How did they think and how did they live...? Despite a perhaps relatively simple lifestyle, they at least managed to create something that has been preserved for posterity!
Filitosa is located north of Proriano on the D57 road on a hill with a beautiful view of the Tavaro valley. Have a look at the official website for up-to-date information and prices, opening hours and other practicalities.
