We have now reached the Costa del Rei on the south-east coast of Sardinia. We had to "escape" from the hot Cagliari, where we were parked in the middle of the sun without the possibility of shade or swimming. We have taken in the camping Le Dune, where we got a relatively shady place.

The road from Cagliari
The road from Cagliari to Costa del Rei was mountainous and occasionally exciting, with fantastic views. Along the way there were also many nice swimming spots.
Arriving at Camping Le Dune in Costa del Rei
Now we have arrived at Camping Le Dune in Costa del Rei. Here we can unfold the awning, take out the outdoor furniture and take a dip in the sea ... all the things needed to survive the 35 degree heat! 30 euro/day is a bit over our budget, but quite ok for a campsite in high season - and right now worth every penny!
An observation from campsites in Sardinia
At each campsite there are many families with children, but also large groups of young people aged 15-17. They sunbathe and swim, play various ball sports, sit in groups and chat and have barbecues. We think they live in cottages in campsites, but I don't know if it is about camp activities, camps ... what? In any case, there seems to be a lot of organised summer activities for young people. More than in Sweden we think?
The beach on the Costa del Rei
The beach here in Costa del Rei is long and lovely. Perhaps we would hang out there more, if it wasn't for the fact that it is actually for hot. Sure it can be nice to have a cool dip, but after that we prefer to hang out in the shade by our campervan...We won't complain and we've had blue skies for three months now without a drop of rain. It's absolutely amazing as we've been on our one year journey, picking our navel every morning and thinking it's Saturday every day. Wonderful!

BP says:
Surely you didn't think - when you started your trip last December - that you'd experience the coldest and windiest spring in Europe for a long time and then the hottest summer ever in the Mediterranean....
The most positive thing is that you will miss the coldest and rainiest summer in Scandinavia in a very long time. You couldn't have known that either...
The mountainous road was fabulously beautiful. The first beach picture - well... The second one was ok, just as it should be on a beach in not yet high season. Oh the picture of Peter was really nice - see that he is starting to get a hint of "ruffles" or "love handles". So the food (and drink) does not seem to be a major problem;-) I recognise myself there 100 percent ...

Mr Steve says:
Of course, you'll want to spend a few extra pounds to take a dip in the sea when the heat gets too much.
Here at home, the debate on summer and young people is mostly about how many young people/families cannot afford any summer activities and that the earmarked money received by the municipalities is not known and therefore not used for the intended purpose.
With your hat on and Freedom on your back, there's no danger of losing Peter.

Shade is worth its weight in gold in the heat... Smart to escape 🙂.
Looks nice there in the new place too - sometimes it is worth living a little over the margins as you intended. 🙂

Steve, it's a shame the local authority money isn't being used! Here in southern Europe, many families camp cheaply in tents or cabins.
Ama de casa, right now shade is golden! 😉

Bosse and Gerd says:
We understand that you suffer "a bit" in the heat - many years ago we lived in Vilamoura on the Algarve coast in Portugal in August and had - for a week - between 43 and 47 degrees in the shade.
We were longing for heat (the summer was then like the one we are experiencing this year), but it was too good..., it was too damn hard and not the least bit nice!

Rolle and Carina, we would love to send up some of the heat! We have a bit too much of the good stuff 😉.
Bosse and Gerd, we made a short visit to Vilamoura! Yes, it can really be too much of a good thing - 43-47 degrees sounds hysterical!!!! Now that we are in the shade at a campsite it is ok. When we stood in the sun in the middle of Cagliari, it was actually quite hard... 😉.

So nice that you got some access to shade!!! Exciting nature down to the new place!

Elisabeth, being parked in the shade is worth its weight in gold right now!!! Yes, nature is dramatic here and there in Sardinia!

Ditte says:
So wise to move closer to the sea. Shade is needed and in the heat also access to swimming and the sea. Perhaps you can get a fan to help at night. But it draws electricity of course.
The costs are still affordable if the comfort is so much better in this place. Don't envy the heat. I am so happy now with the Swedish summer with +23. And I have access to sun and heat when I want and right now I don't want it hot. But I would like a little more sun. We have been to Åland and there it was actually really summery.

Ditte, we have a fan and it's a great help. It only works when we have electricity, but we have that when we are camping. Today we have had some thunderstorms and a short rain shower - and a little more pleasant weather actually! 😉
