Now we have arrived at Marina di Ragusa, which is on the coast not far from Ragusa. We rolled into the car park here late last night. This is a fairly ordinary site on an asphalt car park, but there are services (even showers!) and we got a fantastic welcome from Tony, who immediately wanted to tell us all about where we had come, about the beer festival going on and how to find our way around the town.
Free parking space
Tony also told us that Swedish pensioners come to the site during the winter months - and stay here for six months! We thought that it costs 10 euros/day to stay here (Tony was a bit vague on this particular issue and talked about a box you could put money in?) But then it turned out that it is free. The box is voluntary!
On holiday in Marina di Ragusa
Here in Marina di Ragusa it is apparently quiet in winter, but in summer all Ragusa residents come here, and many have summer homes here (according to Tony).
This is a holiday resort with cafes, shops, bars and a long beach, and right now the beach and ice cream parlours are packed! Because it's so hot in the tarmac car park, we spent a few hours in the shade of a beach bar in the middle of the day.
Italian food
And then there's this Italian cuisine Then ... We got hungry and saw that the company at the next table had each ordered a baked sandwich. Let's have one of those! We didn't know what the filling was, but it was exciting! Maybe ham? Maybe mushrooms? Maybe just tomato and cheese?
Imagine our surprise when we realised the sandwich was filled with lasagne sheets... So, Italian food never ceases to surprise me! Unfortunately not usually in a positive way though. Tonight we're going to check out the shops in the city centre and check out this beer festival we've heard about.

Just popping in for a short while as I've had internet problems. The Italian cuisine continues to surprise me negatively, I see. Can you trust Tony?

Wow, what a mess it looked like on the beach, I'll come another time.

Great to have such a reception. Tony seems to care about his guests. And his tips are really invaluable. Otherwise you might have missed the beer festival. I just hope that it is not as "questionable" as the strange sandwich and your other experiences with food.
Personally, I think that Italian food is totally over-advertised and I don't understand why it has such a good reputation. All these celebrity chefs (including Jamie Oiver) are Italian... A mystery.

I think the Italian food, like the Swedish, can vary between the different parts of the country. When I have been skiing in the Italian Alps, the food has been great and we have often stayed with half board. Likewise in Tuscany, I think the food has been very good across the board. The memories of southern Italian cuisine have faded....
You seem to have got an ok pitch and cheap but it feels hot with tarmac all around and the beach can be skipped right here. The high season has well come.
I hope you had a nice evening.

So it was good what you bought Birgitta and I usually also look around what others have ordered. Because then it is something popular we think!
Nice to join you on your summer trip in Sicily.

Anonymous, think you missed writing your name... Haha, well who knows? We hope we can rely on Tony 😉.
Matts, it's high season now. Not much to do about that.
BP, nice with this kind of reception, it makes a place much better! The beer festival was probably ok, but the Italians were not so interested so it was a bit empty... they may prefer to drink wine 😉.
Ditte, the food can certainly vary and that sounds promising! But what kind of food is it? We are not fond of pizza. Pasta can be ok, but is not really a favourite.
Nils-Åke, I probably wrote carelessly, no it was no big deal. Otherwise I agree, often good to check out what others order!

Being gluten intolerant, I rarely have a reason to eat Italian food, so I don't have a personal opinion on Italian food. It's a lot of pasta and pizza that doesn't work for me, at least not in the tastier versions. But I have a son who loves Italian food and when I read the blog here, it becomes incomprehensible why he does it. Guess, however, that he mostly ate Italian food in Rome where a good friend lived for a long time and there were many visits. Maybe different in different parts of the country. Nice concern with too hot asphalt, we have not had that in Sweden this summer! ;- )

No M, we guess there is better Italian food in some other part of the country. Would love to find it. So far we have had very boring food. Disappointing!

Hey, Swedish seniors in winter? We take that as a good tip...it will probably be Sicily this winter. One month there and then a little here and there...Warm tarmac will probably not be a big problem then. Are there Englishmen also in the winter? It usually guarantees a pleasant stay...Whoever reads will see!

Perfect with such a reception so you get to know what applies and what is going on. Beer festival did not sound stupid at all 🙂
A lasagne-filled sandwich? Well... why not? Most things are probably better than the Glucosalina in liquid form that I'm enjoying right now... I'm happy to switch! 🙂

Solan, we are actually not very fond of Sicily. Now I think it's nicer here in other seasons (right now it's too hot). We don't think it's very beautiful here, and a lot of rubbish. But there are many beautiful and interesting cities. We try to see some, but would see even more if it wasn't for this 35-degree heat 😉 This time of year we only see Italians and Germans, but where we are now (new place) the campsite owner told us that there are usually Swedes, Germans, Dutch and Swiss in the winter.
Ama de casa, haha maybe the sandwich was better than what you are enjoying right now. Otherwise, it is not recommended... 😉.

We have stood on the Marina de Ragusa car park many, many times. ? That site was free last winter and we did not see any Tony.
Can agree with you about the Italian food and all the rubbish, but we found Marina de Ragusa to be one of the cleanest areas in Sicily.
We were just as disappointed as you, Sicily has probably been advertised a little too well, in our opinion. The part ... that you are now on ..... we did not think was particularly beautiful ...... reminded us of the Spanish tomato plantations. However, it gets better further up towards Etna.
Of course you can use my pictures, fun if you link. Just then my computer had crashed so I had to use wordpress instead. Too bad it should be soooo hot....... when there is so much to see and experience in Sicily. Had continued well.

Quite a hearty sandwich m a o! Italian food is fantastic ?? Hot and lovely as usual! A thought strikes me, do you see something of the refugee flow there somewhere?

Maggan and Ingemar, glad you were there! The site IS free, we have realised now, but you can put a voluntary contribution in the box if you want. Tony was probably a self-proclaimed keep-order-in-place camper 😉 Interesting that you were also a little disappointed in Sicily. We're going to take a breather for a few days at a nice site in Pozzallo, then continue up the coast.
Lena & Jan, we haven't seen people fleeing, but we see many many Africans! Haven't seen so many Africans anywhere else in Europe.
