Struga is a small town in North Macedonia located on Lake Ohrid. In summer, the town attracts many tourists, and it is not difficult to understand why.
There are several fine beaches on the lake, while the city is crossed by the clear waters of the Black Drin River. The unlikely number of restaurants are mainly located with a view of the lake or river, and in August the whole city has a holiday feeling.

Visiting Struga
Walking from Sunset camping by Lake Ohrid to the town of Struga is a long walk, but it is quite possible to do it. You walk all the way along the shore with a beautiful view of the lake, and the walking route is simple and straightforward. At one point you pass the Aquarius restaurant, which is an oasis by the water. If you want, you can take a little break here!
Struga - a charming holiday town
Struga is primarily a holiday town filled with restaurants, cafes, shops and excursions. The town is also known for its poetry festival, which takes place every year in August. In fact, it's going on right now, and last night we saw both stages for poetry readings and people dressed in festive clothes who looked like they were part of the festival.
Otherwise, we find this town to be a modern and charming little holiday town. Today we have spent a few hours shopping (low prices!) before walking back to the cosy Sunrise camping - a personal small family owned camping with its own beach and restaurant. Here is a small picture bomb from Struga!
Things to do in Struga
Built above Samuel's 15th-century church, the church of St George tells its own story. Visit the monastery of Kalishta with a boat trip on Lake Ohrid and enjoy the sound of the waves.
Tsar Samuel was once crowned and it was probably in the church of Sveta Bogorodica, and see old frescoes while you're there.
With local guides in Struga
Yesterday, when we were hanging out at the small campsite in Struga on Lake Ohrid, two men who are originally from here, but have been living in Sweden for more than 30 years, dropped in. When they saw that we were Swedish, they thought we should have a beer together in the campsite's small bar. And then there were more beers, an evening walk in the charming town of Struga and a fantastic dinner in a restaurant.
Musli and Shefik live and work in Malmö, but are Albanians from Macedonia. Yes, in the part of North Macedonia where we are now, most people seem to be Albanians. Just like all other Albanians we have met, they are incredibly nice, and now we also got the chance to ask questions about the country, culture and living conditions - and have everything explained in Swedish! Can it get any better?
After a few beers together, they took us into the town of Struga, which turned out to be an insanely charming summer town with shops, strolling tourists and promenades and restaurants along the Black Drin River.
We were having dinner somewhere and Musli and Shefik asked us what we wanted. Of course, we took the chance and said "Albanian!". And what happened? They took us to a nice restaurant where we were treated to a fantastic dinner.
We were served a starter salad with feta cheese and all sorts of tasty vegetables. Then there was a really good stew with meat, mushrooms, peppers and cheese. And then a dessert cake with ice cream ... It was soooo delicious and when we got back to the campsite we were both full of impressions and overwhelmed by the hospitality of our hosts.

What a cosy little town. A holiday paradise that I did not know existed. It really has its advantages to "free ride" with you;-)

BP, there are so many nice places that you don't know about! Too bad that most Swedes go to the same places, there is so much more to discover in the world!
Rolle and Carina, it is really surprisingly nice here in Macedonia!
Åsa, haha, it was perhaps not so exciting... a white top for me and a college cardigan for me. Otherwise, there were a bit too many pastel colours for my taste in the shops 😉.
Nilla, there are many countries in the world to discover when travelling. Exciting! 🙂

These are wonderful gems you will find. A real goldmine for anyone who wants to travel and see something new. A good counterbalance to the travel agencies that tend to cling to old familiar destinations. Enjoy!

Thanks for the guide and beautiful pictures. There is so much in the neighbourhood (Europe) to see and experience and I had very little knowledge of Macedonia. Now I know a little, more ...

Matts, yes, that's how it actually feels...!
Steve, there are so many travel destinations in Europe and the world, yet everyone insists on crowding into the same places... why?
Ditte, we're also learning all the time, and it's nice to be able to tell a few stories in the meantime 😉.

So wonderful to find these gems together with you. How is the "snorkelling situation" in the places you visited in the Albania - Macedonia area?

Anja says:
"Svarta Drin".... The name alone is worth a poetry festival!

Marina, we have not snorkelled ourselves, but we have seen many others who have done it! Both in Albania and here in Macedonia (although it is a lake here instead of the sea). In both places the water is very clear, so it is probably good for snorkelling!

Looked absolutely beautiful! The only error I can find is the name of the river. What do you mean "Black Drin"? Of course it may flow, but black? It doesn't seem to be 😉 .

Ama de casa, yes it's a bit funny... but there's a "Vita Drin" too? By the way, it is called Drim in Macedonian and Drin or Drini in Albanian, I think. So it's a bit confusing 😉
Shefik, we still haven't received the mail we are waiting for, so we are staying for the weekend, and maybe a few more days. This week we are planning a trip to Kercove! 🙂
