Kotor is located deep in the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and recently the number of tourists coming here has increased every year. Many of them come on the big cruise ships that dock in the bay. Kotor is a really charming old town and one of the first things you notice is the large walls that ring the mountain above the town. We immediately wondered ... can you get up there?
Kotor - charming city within walls
Walking through the city gate into Kotor, you enter a charming old town full of old houses, restaurants and small cafes. Despite it being September, there are plenty of tourists here, and we hear people speaking English, French, German, Russian and other languages we can't identify.
We can definitely recommend a visit here, and if we have to point out a minus, it's that prices in restaurants and shops have become quite 'touristy'.
Take the stairs to the top
Climbing the stairs to the old fort at the top costs €3 per person and provides a great view along the way. The effort is probably healthy under normal circumstances, but maybe not so good when you are not really healthy. Peter already had a cold and I, who so far had managed reasonably well, got a real cold as soon as I came down, haha. But it was worth it!
We then stayed overnight at a car park in Kotor together with a whole bunch of other motorhomes. It cost 20 euro/day with no service whatsoever, but at least it was central and we stood nicely by the water.

How nice! But isn't it typical that you have to go so high up to get the view? Why don't they install escalators? Or like in the castle of Santa Barbara in Alicante - a lift? 😉

What views! The last picture is absolutely magical so it was probably worth the money and effort. Maybe the cold too 😉 .

It is fascinating that there are so many fantastic things to see and experience at such close range... I would still be unaware of all this if I had not been able to "follow" your journey. Hope you get rid of your colds quickly.

Great that you find such wonderful places everywhere, the "worst" thing is that it becomes more difficult to choose if you are going on a shorter European tour...;)

Ama de casa, haha, escalators or a lift would have been perfect for my cold 😉.
Znogge, glad you like the picture! I certainly don't regret going up, even though the cold is pretty boring right now...
Steve, yes there really is a lot to see around Europe! It's so nice that you want to "hang out with us" on this trip 🙂.
Marina, haha, no it is not easy to choose when there are so many nice things to see. But rather so than the other way round 😉.

It was a good job! To have a cold and to pay three euros to go up the stairs. They would probably have had to pay me a lot more to go up there. I hate stairs. Why is there no lift or cable car;-)
But ok then, the view is fantastic, I must admit:-) I also love the mighty wall in the first picture.

Wow, that looks lovely! I never managed to convince the rest of the family to climb up to the fort. But maybe just as well, we would have had to carry the boys up! 🙂

It's a shame that prices rise as tourists find their way around. Tourists are there to be shamed, but sometimes the locals bite their tails. The pictures you got for 3 euros are fantastic. Great!

BP, haha, normally I might think it's ok to have some exercise anyway, but right now it might not have been so bad with a lift or cable car... cough, snot 😉.
Vackralillavardag, it's probably hard to go up if you don't want to. There were a lot of steps 😉 .
Veiken, we paid the car park for the money to go up the mountain - but then it was dinner in the motorhome 😉.
Rolle and Carina, I can only agree, normally it would have been a healthy trip up... but right now it might have been the other way round.... cough, sniffles 😉.
