If you want to experience Croatia, the best way to do so is by car. If you just fly down and stay in one place, you'll miss out on the breathtaking views from the roads and the opportunity to see multiple locations in this amazing country. We think travelling by motorhome is great. If you fly down, you can rent a car in Croatia to travel around.
How are the roads in Croatia?
During this trip, we have so far travelled the coastal road from Dubrovnik in the south to Omis, at the top of the Makarska Riviera. We have also gone out on and driven across the nice and long narrow road. Hvar Island. A few years ago we drove around Istria during the summer holidays.
Our experience is that most of the roads in Croatia are very good and of a high standard. They are also clearly signposted and there are plenty of places to pull off the road and take a break. Some smaller roads can certainly be worse - on the island of Hvar the roads were winding and had steep edges.
What should you be aware of in traffic?
As in most European countries, talking on a mobile phone while driving is prohibited. In roundabouts, cars entering the roundabout have the right of way, rather than the other way around. This has been the case in several countries in the Balkans, which Peter finds backward and unfamiliar ...
Another unexpected rule is that children under 12 are not allowed to ride in the front seat of the car. Also, try to avoid parking incorrectly as it is common to lock your car's wheels until the parking fine is paid! Here you can find more traffic rules and Tips for renting a car in Croatia.
Car hire in Croatia
We have no personal experience of hiring a car in Croatia, but we understand that it should be relatively cheap. To hire a car, you must be at least 18 years old and have had a driving licence for at least 1 year. If you are under 25, you will usually have to pay an extra charge and many car hire companies have an older age limit of 70.

What wonderful pictures! Well, not the queue in Dubrovnik then, but the rest;-)
Then it strikes me that Sweden is one of the few countries where talking on a mobile phone while driving is still allowed. I don't like bans, but here I wouldn't hesitate.
We don't have a motorhome, but we almost always rent a car when we go on holiday. We don't just want to see the touristy part of a city but get out into the countryside where we are.
Great post by the way:-)

Marie, haha understand how you think! Guess they want to be sure to collect the fine! 😉
Krisztina, we can't get tired of travelling I think! 😉 We do not long for home at all. However, it starts to feel less hard to go home! 😉 Peter says that he is not at all tired of driving (usually we drive quite short distances at a time).
BP, many people think that we have many bans in Sweden, but in this case it is actually the opposite! If we didn't have a motorhome, we would also rent a car. It is only when you drive around that you get to see a little more than just the tourist resort where you happened to land!

Mr Steve says:
Travelling around a new country by car is a superior way to get a feel for the country,
as your fantastic journey shows. Traffic jams are included wherever you are so you have to take it. The thing with the roundabout right of way seems to be good to know before you end up there.

Lennart, motorhomes are almost always a great way to experience other countries! 😉
Steve, you have to expect a few fatties in traffic sometimes. Not of a serious nature here!
Ditte, sailing here must be fantastic too!
