Are you a foodie and thinking of travelling to Turku? Then you should definitely plan a visit to the Turku Market Hall, or Kauppahalli as it is called in Finnish. Here you will find everything from fish and seafood to Karelian pies and pastries. We took the opportunity to try two local specialities that we highly recommend!
Fish, seafood and other delicacies
We love seafood, so it's often the most appealing when we browse in a market hall. In the Turku market hall, we found, among other things, the shop Herkkunuottawhere there was plenty of fresh, smoked and pickled fish, but also rum, oysters, pâtés and various fish cakes. Very exciting to botanise here!
We got to taste an absolutely awesome mess made from pike roe. It may sound unusual, but it was really soooo good! This mess is almost a must to try if you happen to be in the neighbourhood! Of course, you will find many other delicacies in the market hall as well, such as meat, sausages, cheeses, Karelian pies and Russian blinis.
Confectionery and restaurants in the Turku Market Hall
Piece of cake, located inside the Turku Market Hall, is considered to be the best pastry shop in Turku, and if you like pastries, you can really get your fill here. We tried a chocolate and blueberry pastry that is a speciality of this particular bakery - yummy!
But there was a lot of other stuff too, as you can see in the picture. There are also several lunch restaurants inside the market hall and along one of the long sides there is seating in what looks like real train carriages.
More to see and do in the neighbourhood
There is much to see and do in and around Turku. For example, we can advise on Turku Castle, if beer tasting at the School, if good restaurants around Turku and if Turku archipelago in winter splendour. In addition, there is of course much to see and what to do in Helsinki. Even more tips for Finland can be found below.

Steve, isn't it!? 🙂
Ama de casa, it's dangerous to be hungry when you walk around such places, haha 😉.
Ditte, interesting that you can see that a lot has changed! It was not a huge market hall, but really fresh and attractive shops and restaurants. Yum! 🙂

Henny says:
Now I am looking forward to a motorhome tour in Finland. I have mostly only good memories from this neighbouring country that we were initially so sceptical about. Market halls are always worth a visit. We are not far from a visit to Tornio on the border with Sweden. There I usually buy their coarse rye bread, sauna sausages and liquorice when I get the chance.

Henny, we really feel that Finland must be incredibly nice for motorhome trips in the summer! We can definitely imagine travelling here again and exploring more!
