The New York Times has published a list of the 52 best travel destinations for 2016. Of course, these lists should be taken with a pinch of salt, but it's still fun to be inspired and get new travel ideas. We present the top 10 destinations on the list - and you'll probably be surprised by number nine!
10 destinations to visit in 2016
Here are the top ten destinations listed by the New York Times. If you are curious, you can also read the full list of 52 destinations.
- Mexico City, Mexico - A world city that has everything

- Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota, USA - A century of protection to America's greatness
- Mozambique - New lodges and beaches - and more tolerance
- Toronto, Canada - Canada's biggest city is ready to be seen close-up
- Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - New museums, hotels and a greener desert

- Vinales, Cuba - Looking for the real Cuba? We have found it
Why you should visit Skåne in 2016
Skåne can thus boast a 9th place on the list. The landscape is described as 'mythologically Swedish' and is praised for its beautiful coastline, mushroom-filled forests and red houses. But it's the food that has helped put Skåne on the list. The magazine praises Hörte Brygga for fresh seafood, valley bottoms for its bakery and Daniel Berlin Krog for home-grown vegetables and game meat from animals hunted by the chef himself.
I myself was born and raised in Skåne (in the Lund), but I haven't been there much since I moved away at the age of 14. Do you usually holiday in Skåne, or maybe you even live there? Do you think the landscape belongs on the top 10 list? If so, what is your best Skåne tip?
Only British /Charlotta says:
Mythological Swedish is exactly what it is not. Everyone down here makes fun of "red cottages and mushroom forests". After more than thirteen years here, I can tell you about my great favourite, Ven. Other favourites are Kopparhatten, Bjärehalvön, Knäbäckshusen and Romeleåsen.

Comsi Comsa says:
In Mexico City I have been, we drove from Mexico City to Cancun a fantastic and scary journey with police officers who chased us to find things so they could increase their salaries ... But we reached the next border and then they could not continue to chase us but had to turn around. Tji got them.... 🙂

Ditte says:
A fun list! But I hadn't imagined Mexico City at the top, nor several other destinations.
Of the destinations, I would like to visit Cuba. I have visited Malta, Skåne, Bordeaux, Toronto, Roosvelt National Park and Abu Dabi, but I don't know if these are the best destinations for me. But everything is subjective...
Fun list anyway! And I want to see more of Skåne....Much more!

Krisztina says:
I might have wanted to see Vinales (Cuba) a little higher on the list than in last place, have been there and it is nice with beautiful nature, but the real Cuba is still Havana. Longing to return.

BP says:
Yes, it was indeed a surprise. Didn't expect Malta to be third either, to be honest.
I must admit that I have only been to Malmö and Ystad, and that was a long time ago. But Österlen is widely known, among other things, for its art galleries. Congratulations Skåne I just say!

admin says:
Just British/Charlotta, red cottages are more common in Småland...? Thanks for all the great Skåne tips!
BP, the list is a bit surprising in several ways, but I say the same thing, just say congratulations to Skåne! 🙂
Comsi Comsa, that sounds dramatically worse! But I've actually heard similar stories from other people who have been to Mexico...
Ditte, lists are always very subjective... and what do you judge something by? Still, I think it's kind of fun, and you can open your eyes to new places. I also want to see Cuba. And why not experience more of Skåne? 😉
Krisztina, great to hear that you like Cuba. We would love to go there!

Elisabeth says:
Let's congratulate Skåne on the ranking and hope they discover other Swedish landscapes as well. I think it is incredibly difficult to grade. So many factors to be considered. Just know that there is so much I would like to see that there is probably not enough time for everything!
11 January 2016 - 22:22
admin says:
Elisabeth, I can agree that grading is almost hopeless. It would be a little easier if you were to judge the best sun and beach destination or the best food country or something else. Now it is almost hopeless to compare... But fun that Skåne got such a nice placement anyway! 🙂

nils-åke hansson says:
Certainly Skåne fits the bill
Many nice places Ven, Kullaberg, Åsarna, Österlen and all the castles. Lund with botanical etc. Helsingborg and We must not forget Landskrona There are lots of All so café Flickorna Lundgren and many more.

bosses says:
Siem Reap in Cambodia with Angkor Wat is missing from the list. A fantastic area in a wonderful country. Make sure you have plenty of time in Angkor. There are also a lot of scary things to see such as the Killing Fields. Otherwise, one can well say that it is cheap so you are ashamed, haggling is not to think about.

Ruth in Virginia says:
Yes, there were indeed some unexpected places. I subscribe to the NY Times
Friday-Sunday edition, so I read about all the places on the list. That Skåne would
to be in the first 10 was a surprise. The Norwegian fjords should have been mentioned. Wonderful Sydney was next to last, and interesting Ubud on Java.
was 49.
Regarding. Cuba - my nephew's daughter and husband were just in Cuba dancing salsa.
for the whole shebang. Had interesting photos on FB.
As you say, it is impossible to grade the whole globe. Various individuals wrote
about their favourites. No wonder it was such a mixed bag. The magazine must
have received thousands of proposals.

Casa Annika says:
Kivik is my Skåne tip. Because a small shop there makes the best chocolate pralines I have ever tried!
Or was it made...? The last time I was there was... hm... seven years ago, I think...
Brösarp's slopes are fantastically beautiful.

Ruth in Virginia says:
Sorry - Ubud is a town in BALI !!!

Mr Steve says:
Skåne is definitely a surprise but is well worth a visit. In Österlen and along the Skåne coast there are many gems.
I am also surprised by Malta's third place even though I think the island is also well worth a visit. There are a number of nice Mediterranean islands to choose from, as you have shown, but Malta is very small and convenient.
Mexico City at the top also surprises me.
And Aarhus on 13th
And Greece, Thessaloniki? only on the 47th.
I could go through the whole list like this, but it's also a matter of taste and not least my own travel experiences.

Nils-Åke Hansson, thanks for all the great Skåne tips! Perhaps we can explore more of Skåne with the motorhome at some point 🙂.
Bosse, yes there are probably many destinations you would like to see on the list! We have not been to Cambodia, but it sounds very interesting and exciting!
Ruth in Virginia, yes, the Norwegian fjords are some of the most beautiful in the North! But as you say, there are many different people who have thought and thought. Can also think that they want a little upstart and travel destinations that feel new and interesting in some way... Cuba sounds exciting!
Casa Annika, thanks for the Skåne tips! I haven't been to Kivik yet ...
Steve, I can agree that the list is surprising in many ways. We liked Malta, but the fantastic ranking is still a bit surprising. But as you say, a list like this is really a matter of opinion, taste and travel experience, and it's probably impossible to agree 😉.

Ama de casa says:
I've been to some of these places, but there's so much left to see of the world!
🙂
I haven't spent much time in Skåne. I worked a lot in Malmö many years ago, but then I mostly saw the workplace. Then we were in Helsingborg for a few days a couple of years ago.
However, I am completely surrounded by people from Skåne here in Torrevieja - luckily I have a Skåne-Swedish dictionary! 😀

Ama de casa, so that's where they live!? 😉 We met many people from Skåne at the Algarve coast in Portugal as well 😉.

Johan Persson says:
Mythological Swedish, then I think of Dalarna with its red cottages and Dala horses:)
But all of Sweden is nice, and it's great that Skåne made the list.

Steel city anna says:
They obviously don't read the news, those who make that list 🙂 it's not the Nordic cuisine I think of first when I see number 9.
12 January 2016 - 13:54
admin says:
Johan, I agree with you. There are other landscapes that feel more "traditional" if you think of red cottages, etc. But still fun that Skåne is included! 🙂
Steel city Anna, interesting comment, but what's in the news isn't often the same as what's in tourist brochures... 😉.

I read the whole list and realised that I still have a lot to visit!!!

Forgot to mention in my previous post Fiordland on New Zealand's south island. An absolutely magical trip both on the way there and the trip out into the fjord. The world's highest vertical beaver walls that plunge into the sea over 1600 metres.

Helena says:
I think it's great that a Swedish region actually got a place on the list. I myself have only visited Skåne twice. Once in Helsingborg for just under 24 hours and most recently last autumn when I went around for a week. Planning a road trip there this spring so it will be fun!

Marina, same here! 😉
Bosse, oh that sounds fascinating! We've actually been to NZ's south island, but we missed what you describe... Guess it will be a while before we get there again...
Helena, oh what fun with a road trip to Skåne! 🙂 Hope to follow along on the blog! 😉
