The word 'camping' has got a bit of a distorted reputation and I think it's time to reclaim it! What do you think of when you hear 'camping'? Do you picture rows of caravans with awnings, fences and garden plots, parked safely in the same spot year after year?
Thinking about the TV series Böda camping? Seriously, it's time to rethink! Camping is for all of us who want to see and experience a bit more on the road, whether we're travelling by motorhome, caravan, car, motorbike or whatever.
What does 'camping' mean?
It's obvious that the word "camping" can have some different associations and I decided to see if there is some kind of definition. The description you can find on Wikipedia seems pretty good, except maybe this "hike". Seriously, is there anyone who uses that word in the 21st century?
Camping is a type of tourism where people stay in tents, caravans, motorhomes, holiday homes or similar, but not in hotels, hostels or under the open sky. Camping tourists usually travel by motor vehicle, bicycle or boat. If you stay in the open air, hike on foot or travel by canoe, you are usually referred to as a 'haik'.
A camper is a person who uses a mobile form of accommodation regardless of location and purpose. The meaning has evolved over the years and includes more than those staying at a campsite. Even those who stay overnight in caravans, motorhomes, etc. for sports and leisure activities are now included in the term camper. A camper is thus defined by the mobile form of accommodation rather than the location of the campsite.
Campers experience more
People with motorhomes are often a bit afraid of the word camping. Maybe because they don't want to be associated with beer and flower boxes. Most motorhome owners (and perhaps many caravan owners too!) like to travel around and see and experience things, whether in Sweden or abroad. They avoid as much as possible to say that they are camping, but rather explain that they are sleeping in the motorhome. But I would love to recapture the word camping!
During our trip around Europe, we met lots of cool campers travelling in different types of vehicles - motorhomes of all kinds, VW buses, off-road vehicles with tents on the roofs, regular cars, motorbikes, caravans... you name it! What we all had in common was that we didn't want to stay in one hotel, we wanted to travel around, find unknown places and meet new people. Since I think we all have something in common, but since not everyone can use the word motorhome, I want to reclaim the word camping. Camping is for adventurers! What do you say?

Dryden - Traveller's Edition says:
I don't use "hajk", but "hike", or "trekk".
When I was a kid, the whole family went on camping holidays in Europe for three years in a row and two weeks per summer. The youngest was my sister 5, the oldest was my brother 14 and I was in between. We had dedicated goals for the trips but pitched tents at various campsites on the way there and back and all five of us crammed into an old Saab 900. I remember a lot about those trips and I think it was probably somewhere where the whole love of travelling was born. And that I love travelling/driving.
Now we do not tent more than if we make mountain trips, but possibly we take a race this summer with more tent nights instead of expensive hotels when we are going to do Norway. Freedom reigns! 🙂

Yes, there is more adventure if you go camping than if you stay in a hotel, more independence, more freedom, more nature experience! I went on a camping holiday with my family every year when I was a kid and have great memories of it, not to mention Sverkers about my camping adventures in a "motorhome" or rather a car with a mattress and a stove. Two trips to Australia and many trips to Gotland. Now it was a long time ago so now it's time again. We will borrow a campervan and discover more of Portugal for a couple of days during the Easter holidays. It will be great fun!
I actually use the word hike when I hashtag pictures from walks along the sea. 🙂

I like that wikipedia starts the explanation of camping with "tent" 🙂 It is often forgotten nowadays. Although I would like to have a slightly larger tent than the one the Germans had... 😉.
I have absolutely nothing against camping, on the contrary! I think it is fantastic that you can travel around and get your own plot for your accommodation. In recent years, it has become more hotel camping for us. But I call it so seriously, because I really love camping 😀.

Yes, there are certainly many different ways to camp. I also like camping in secluded places, on a lonely beach, a cliff in Iceland or in the bush in New Zealand.
Here, camping is almost a national religion and at Christmas everyone either goes on a camping holiday, to their batch (the family's humble summer cottage) or out on the boat. A chocolate calendar I saw last Christmas said Kiwi Christmas. Below the text, Santa was sitting in a deck chair outside the tent, with the kayak outside, a beer in his hand and the grill on.
Your motorhome adventures are amazing and inspiring!

Imelda, ?
Dryden, hike or trek sounds a bit more 2016! 😉 Nice to hear about nice childhood car trips and that it led to an increased desire to travel! 🙂
Rolle and Carina, thank you very much!
Lisa, haha, thank you for your wonderful comment! 🙂
Lina, there are different types of camping. Renting a cabin is a good alternative that is a bit underestimated I think!
Åsa, it is so much fun that you are going out with a campervan again! Looking forward to reading about it 🙂 Ok, I may have to think about my hesitation over the word hajk then 😉 Hike is really the same thing and I have by definition nothing against Swedish spelling of foreign words, but "hajk" sounds a bit 1970 to me haha 😉
Ama de casa, now the tents were included. At last! 🙂
Marie, great to hear about the camping culture in NZ! Yes, indeed, camping can be many different things! But it is a great way to experience a country and nature.
Steve, these are camping adventure photos, aren't they? All were taken during our round Europe trip.

Words related to caravan owners and campers:
Low income/unemployed, workout clothes, tattoos, men with jewellery in their ears, barbecue and beer (belly), camping chairs. low intellectual conversation. moonshine, damp and ugly clothes, Ullared's design, white trash or in summary....

Great inspiration! We are going camping in the US, looking forward to it so much! When I was younger, we always went on camping holidays, maybe not in tents but in cabins. Hotels were not even on the table. Have great memories of the campsites we lived on during childhood.

How good that you highlight this. Like you, I think many people think in outdated ways. When I have finished travelling as a tour guide, I have said for a long time that I will reduce or stop, maybe the desire for this will come back in a slightly more modern form. Have done it a lot in the past. But right now I am travelling so much for work.
Take care!

I have previously praised you for the blog. And now when I bought "Motorhome and Caravan" for that reason, I felt a tremendous desire to just drop everything and go on the road. Unfortunately, life is not like that, so I have to make do with nice blogs. My children gave me a blog site for my birthday a year ago. Now you have inspired me to do some writing. My question is what tools do you have? Ipad, laptop or bigger stuff. Is it difficult to post pictures and can you post all the pictures you take yourself. I know it is sensitive with children, but are there other restrictions?

Helena. wonderful that you have such great memories of camping holidays from childhood! And it will be great fun to read about your camping holiday in the USA! 🙂
Katta - Bucketlife, motorhome is freedom :)And glad to hear you like the new theme!
Lena in Wales, thank you for your comment! When you travel a lot at work, it can take away the desire to travel in your spare time. Excited to see what you choose to do in the future!
Annar Aas, it's great that you have a blog site and it's great that we've been able to inspire you! I use a laptop to blog, it works great. It's probably great with an iPad too, but I don't have one so I've never tried it, You can post pictures you take yourself, but when I take pictures of other people at close range I always ask them if it's ok to post pictures of them on our blog.

Have camped a lot in younger ages and travelled around the USA and with tents and we then alternated hotel / motel accommodation with camping and then in tents. We have also travelled around the USA with a camper, "folk bus". On N.Z. it became a motorhome.
I've also done some camping in Europe, and it's been in tents.
And when I've hiked in the mountains in Norway and Sweden, I've also camped and always brought a tent.
We have also spent a winter week in a rented caravan on a pitch in Sälen and it worked well.
In the south of France we rented a large caravan for a couple of weeks at a very nice campsite with all the comforts and large plots included.
Today I was going to fly south and rent a motorhome in the country.
However, some have experience as boat campers. A bit the same as with a motorhome ....
I'm glad you brought up this topic and the word means different things to us.

Goatfish says:
It's great that you brought this up with Camping. Nice post!
My "old" picture was just a caravan with a row of awnings, even tents on the campsite.
But we liked to free camp without an awning, without a night here and the next there, possibly some F-camping in between. All the comfort was in the caravan. And it could be adventurous, all around Sweden and Denmark.
Now I'm talking about 1995 onwards.
We have also camped in Europe. And from that you get free exercise. Tent up and tent down, bending and stretching 😉.
These were my memories/ Gerd

Ditte, you have solid camping experience 🙂 I think flying and then renting a motorhome on site can be an excellent idea in many cases. We did that when we travelled to NZ, but you can do that in southern Europe too! And I agree that there are some similarities between boating and motorhoming. It's also not uncommon for boaters to switch to a motorhome at some point in their lives 😉.
Geddfish, so glad you liked the post! It's also fun to share your camping memories! And yes, camping is probably super good for public health, I think! 🙂

It is probably true that the word "camping" is associated with different things depending on who you talk to. For myself, I think I associate it with both "permanently camping caravan owners" with fenced plots of land and with travelling tent people and everything in between. I myself would find it very difficult to settle in a caravan in the same place year after year, but travelling around with a tent feels perfectly fine.

Sofia says:
How wonderful that you bring this up, as the thoughts about this have appeared many times in my own head. Many times I have felt that I had to defend my motorhome use with an explanation about this. Certainly completely unnecessary because it is my preconceived opinion about what people think of us campers. Haha! Hope it's ok that I share?! /Sofia

admin says:
Lennart, it sounds like you are camping comfortably and well today! But you certainly had nice experiences as younger in tents too! 🙂
Matts, yes it really is a "camp" you have entered! Cheer on and hope that you can continue!
Marina, I would also have a hard time spending my holiday in a stationary caravan, but then summer cottages are not really my thing either. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, but you have to find what you like!
Sofia, how nice to hear that you liked the post and that you had similar thoughts yourself! Of course ok to share! 🙂

I'm a bit late on stage.
To me, 'camping' has always meant putting up a tent.
I still think it sounds weird to say camping, when you take
home with a sling on wheels. Snail journey ??? Turtle trip??? 🙂
We often went camping with the kids. In California, you didn't have to worry about...
for rain in the summer months, except in the higher areas of the city.
Sierra Nevada.
Being a scout leader for 6 years, camping with little girls is an adventure,
I should say.
The most interesting camping trip was by canoe in Ontario's lake district.
My husband and I plus our two children (15 and 20). Two Canadians packed
and we paddled on three lakes. The canoes had to be carried (portage) between
the lakes. It was true wilderness camping. The water so clean that it
could be drunk. After we set up camp, we took a sight-seeing tour.
on the lake. We did not meet any other campers.
Here, motorhomes are called 'trailers'. Trailer parks are everywhere, where they,
who can't afford to buy a house, live - A patronising term is 'trailer trash'.
But then, of course, there are the up-scale stands, where the monster...
trailers can be parked.
Whatever I think about motorhomes, I enjoy reading about your travels.

Ruth in Virgina, I'm so glad you enjoy reading our blog and our travels, even if we don't always like motorhomes 🙂 Very nice to hear about your previous camping experiences, it sounds wonderful when you describe the nature experiences. By the way, trailers in the US are caravans and not motorhomes (I am preparing a post about this for tomorrow!). And I do think that camping with a motorhome can be adventurous sometimes, e.g. when you free camp alone on a beach for a week or travel around the countryside in Albania and free camp 😉 The adventure is that you can travel around on unknown roads and camp in nature where no other people are. Even if you have a nice motorhome, you have no eternal resources when it comes to electricity, water, etc. when you are not on a campsite 😉.

Eva - People in the Street says:
I say camping is for adventurers! During my most adventurous part of my life where the focus was mostly on rock climbing, mountain biking, telemark and hiking in southern Europe, the only possible accommodation was camping. However, it was a regular car (read Saab 99, model year 1975) and a tent that was needed!
Wonderful time!
