After the city walk in Östermalm On Saturday we continued our walk on Skeppsholmen. The naval activity that once gave Skeppsholmen its name is long gone, but the name of the island still fits well. There are lots of interesting and charming old ships out here.
Table of contents
From lustholme to naval base to museum island
In the 16th century, Skeppsholmen was called Lustholmen because various kings enjoyed themselves here: they built gardens and gazebos and organised parties. In the 17th century, the naval shipyard moved to the island, which then changed its name to Skeppsholmen. Military activities remained on the island until 1968, but today various museums have moved into the military buildings, including the Moderna Museet and the East Asian Museum.
Ships on Skeppsholmen today
The most famous ship on Skeppsholmen is the three-masted full-rigger Af Chapman, which today serves as a hostel. The ship was built in 1888 and underwent an extensive renovation between 2006 and 2008.
Along the quays managed by the Stockholm Shipowners' Association, there are also some 40 older private boats with varied histories. The boats may have served as anything from trawlers to lightships and are today remodelled and decorated in all sorts of creative ways. Have you ever walked around Skeppsholmen and seen these boats? If not, it's a walk to be recommended!
Houseboats on Skeppsholmen
The ships are considered ships and not houseboats, but some of them definitely look like they could be lived in. "Unlike our houseboat, which is registered in the construction planning at Solna municipality, these have a one-year contract. They also have tanks in the boats instead of connected municipal water and sewage, as we do.
You can't live permanently in the houseboats here, but who knows? One hopes in any case that the ships will remain! Walking here with all the ships and being able to go to a restaurant with a view of Djurgården - that's Stockholm!
More to see and do at Skeppsholmen
When you are in Skeppsholmen, you can take the opportunity to visit different museums. In addition to the Moderna Museet and the East Asian Museum, you will find the architecture and design museum ArkDes and the toy museum Stockholm Toy Museum.

A lovely walk, I can imagine. I have never been there myself. It looks a bit cold in the pictures.

Like I said, there's nothing wrong with being a tourist at home! Oh yes, I have walked around Skeppsholmen and even been cultural and visited Moderna Museet. Good that you recommend the walk because it's really nice!

Thank you for the great tour! Stockholm is beautiful!
If I had lived closer, I would have made that walk every time, because I am very interested in old boats. We often looked at old harbours and ships when my husband was alive and dreamed of having our own boat.
Hugs, Gerd ♥

What a nice walk you did. We are here quite often and of course it is fun to see the old ships that are here and on Skeppsholmen there is also an old ship shop and café, Skroten and there we have bought boat stuff when we had a boat.
In summer, Skeppsholmen is perfect for a picnic, as is Kastellholmen.
Lovely photos from a beautiful Stockholm.
We are often tourists in the city and there is a lot to see and discover both in the city centre and in the immediate surroundings.

Nice to be a tourist in Sweden too!:)

Gunnel, it's nice and it wasn't that cold actually, even though we were probably there at 6pm 😉.
Steve, some things bear repeating. We agree!
Frank Olsen, right? 😉
BP, yes I can understand that you have been there! I've also been to the Moderna Musee, but only once as far as I remember and that was a very long time ago... so maybe it should be repeated on occasion! 😉
Geddfish, yes but it is nice to walk in harbours and look at ships and boats!
Ditte, really? We actually missed Skeppshandeln and the café... thanks for the tip! Kastellholmen is also nice. We actually walked further on Sunday and I have more pictures, but haven't had time to show them yet...
Kattis, yes, it's easy to miss your own city! A: We have been here and there in Italy actually. Among other things, we have travelled around northern Italy: around Lake Garda and Lake Iseo, the Valpolicella Valley, Milan, Verona, Bergamo, Venice... We have also travelled around all of Sardinia and all of Sicily and we have been at the bottom of Italy, both in the heel and in the toe 😉

Mmm ... how nice. I love boats and I love Skeppsholmen. Just walking around there and letting your imagination run wild while looking at the boats that are there.
I think it is so good in Sthlm that there is often information about the boats that are anchored.
What beautiful weather you had! Perfect for a prommis! Now I'm homesick...

Inga Magnusson says:
Yes, but it's nice! The son's partner likes to walk in Stockholm, we have been there together with a pram on a warm early summer day! And of course I have been to Moderna several times. I wonder if it has opened again after renovation, but maybe you were not there? Fun to read about the island's history.

Annika, yes it is fun when there is information about the boats! There is some of it on Skeppsholmen. We would love to know more about our own boat, but we don't know how to find that information unfortunately....
Inga M, no we were not at Moderna now and it was a long time since I was there, so I have no knowledge at all... I only know that Nationalmuseum is closed for renovation...

Maria's Memoirs says:
Nice boats - I fell a little extra for Torsten 🙂 .
answer: Yes, there was actually not so much boat spotting, I chose for some reason to go into other paths instead that led more into the centre of the island 🙂 Walked around there completely according to feeling 😉 Maybe I instead got some different photos of Skeppsholmen, when most others may have focused on just the boats and houseboats? A little bitch against the current like that 😉.
