Pilote motorhomes have introduced a new model this year, the Galaxy 650, which is only 6.50 metres long. It's rare to see fully-integrated vehicles this short, so it's exciting to see how manufacturers have thought about the layout. We've taken a closer look at this model, which feels unexpectedly spacious and airy for such a small car.

Most of what you need
The Pilote Galaxy 650 is available in two different versions: with long beds or with a queen bed. Despite its small size, the car seems to have everything you need. The living room has a centred dining table with four seats and a holder for a TV. The kitchen is equipped with a 2 and 3 burner stove, a round sink with a lid and a large refrigerator.
The bathroom has a toilet, bathroom cabinet and shower with separate shower door and the bedroom is equipped with wardrobes or other storage solutions, depending on the model. There is also an extra double bed that can be folded down from the ceiling over the dining area if there are four people sleeping in the car. Looking at the pictures from inside the motorhome, it looks unexpectedly spacious and comfortable, and it's almost hard to believe that the car is actually as small as it is.
Advantages and disadvantages of a small motorhome
So what is it you not What do you get when you choose a motorhome this small? Obviously you have to compromise on something when you reduce the length. First of all, there is no oven. We like to have an oven in our motorhome, but we've noticed that new motorhomes are often sold without an oven, so the lack of one in such a small vehicle is quite expected. The seating area around the table is also slightly smaller than usual, without being particularly small. Last but not least, the exterior storage space is limited.
The advantages of a small motorhome are of course that it is easy to drive even on smaller roads and that it is much easier to park. When you have to park in the middle of a city, at an attraction or outside a supermarket, you always want your motorhome to be as small as possible on the outside!
Personally, we like to be able to choose small roads and park in the centre of towns and villages. When we were travelling around Europe last year, we often thought that we didn't want a bigger motorhome, but that a smaller car would be convenient. At the same time, it should be big inside ...
Three degrees of finish
The Pilote Galaxy 650 is available in three degrees of finish: Essential, Sensation and Emotion. In the basic version (Essentiel) there is what we described above, but if you want a slightly more luxurious version, you can choose one of the extra fine variants. This adds additional features such as a Bluetooth CD tuner, aluminium-style dashboard, leather steering wheel and gear lever, sliding front blackout curtains, extra LED lighting here and there and an entrance door with central locking.
Appealing design & smart solutions
What we spontaneously like about the Pilote Galaxy 650 is that it feels so airy and spacious on the inside, despite being so small on the outside. By making the seating area slightly smaller, you gain a lot of space.
In many larger motorhomes, you can fit six people around the dining table, but since there are rarely more than four people, this seems like a convenient solution to get more space without losing anything essential.
Another thing we like is small smart storage solutions such as a spice rack in the kitchen and many small cabinets. We also think the design is nice and appealing. What do you think?
New dealer in Stenungsund
Västkustens Husbilscenter Finbil AB has already sold used motorhomes (under the name Stenungsunds bil & fritid), but is now also a new dealer of brand new motorhomes. Pilote motorhomes.
The small Pilote Galaxy 650 is thus one of the most important mobile homes you can find at Västkustens Husbilscenter Finbil, but there are of course also several other larger models. In mid-April, they will also open their second outlet in Lödöse, focusing on affordable used motorhomes.
This post is written in collaboration with Västkustens Husbilscenter Finbil AB. The opinions and thoughts are, as usual, our own.

Oh what a nice motorhome, our neighbour has bought a similar one but a number bigger.
Have not yet been to check the inside, but Rantafar has been and he thought it was very nice and spacious. It had a toilet and shower at the back. They went to the mountains yesterday, and guess what, we were hooked, but we haven't got our cone car out yet, next weekend we had thought because now we have withdrawal for real.

Yes, it is a little bigger than the one we borrowed, but it was a flatbed, although I don't like that name, I think it could be called a camping car, the one we had. We saw some teddy bear cars along the way but thought ours was good enough for our needs. I would have liked to keep it!

There is a great alternative to a regular oven. A Remoska! I know it's available on Lakeland.co.uk, I think it's on Amazon.com too, but Lakeland 'owns' the product and is very good to deal with.
A Remoska consists of a lid with a heating element in it, you put the food in the included Teflon-coated mould, put the lid on and turn on the heat.
You can cook everything that you normally do in an oven, plus roast potatoes, I have had mine for almost 4 years it is used extensively, probably one of the better kitchen gadgets I have purchased. It runs on electricity, but that is not usually a problem for motorhomes, an inverter and you can use the Remoskan via the battery bank.

It's a matter of taste if you want a smaller motorhome and give up less space. Of course it's nice to be able to park easily. Great interior design. Can't you buy a portable oven that you can easily take with you to ..........? Thanks for all the great info. Kramiz

Rantamor, how nice that it's one of those, but a bit bigger, that your neighbour bought! And I understand that you are eager to get out with the motorhome now!
Åsa, we may well decide to call it a campervan then, haha. As I said, just the type of car that you were out with I have not even seen in Sweden so it is difficult with the vocabulary then 😉
Ann-Sofie, how nice that you write about that oven remoska. I have not heard of it, but googled and saw pictures. Thanks for the tip! Motorhome drivers in Sweden, on the other hand, quite often use a kind of oven called Omnia, which I think you put on the stove. But we ourselves have a real oven in the motorhome, which runs on LPG 😉.
Biggeros, yes it is a choice whether you want a bigger or smaller motorhome. In some models you can order an oven as an option and install it, if there is space. Then there is also a kind of loose oven variant called Omnia that some people buy and put on the stove, I think.

Yes you Åsa.Camping car it should be.We replaced our 8.36 mtr long Niesmann+Bischoff -12 mod with a Globecar camping car.No wonder they sell so well in Germany these. You get everywhere, and you park wherever you want!!! If you want to stay a few days in one place, you pull up the awning, and suddenly have 10 square metres to move around. In the future there will probably be more and more of these smaller cars, as practical as they are.

Pilote are fine French motorhomes that have been on the market for a long time!
The first one we rented was a Pilote a la -80s 🙂 .
Skokloster are nice to deal with, Daniel and his wife!
Look there you will see, you are close to there too 🙂 .
Happy Holidays......

Thanks for the nice info. Seems to be a nice smaller motorhome and the interior is of course more compact as it is a smaller car, a bit like a boat that we have experience with. And many smart solutions are always appreciated.

Ottar, thanks for the comment about the campervan! I haven't really known what to call this model in Swedish... I also think that smaller motorhomes, of different models, will become more and more popular in the future.
Rolle and Carina, we don't have any direct experience of Pilot motorhomes, but we think they've looked good when we've seen them at trade fairs. Nice to hear your opinion!
Ditte, well maybe it will be even more like boating in a small camper van 😉.

If I only had the energy, I would look up the post I wrote about the Caravan 2016 fair in Kista. Because if I don't remember completely wrong, it was exactly the motorhome we "amateurs" stuck to. It was just right and incredibly nice!
PS. Still have to find the post...;-) DS

No, I didn't write about it, but the picture of it is in the folder, as the husband and I took several pictures of it from different angles. Good, then I know 😉 .

Yes, campervan describes exactly what it is and motorhome is a bit of a stretch, but how many people google campervan if they want to hire one? The question is whether I should change anyway?

BP, glad you took pictures of it! I remember that you were stuck with some Pilote!
Åsa, I understand what you mean. I wouldn't change, but maybe use the word campervan in one of the posts, in case someone googles it?
