Many destinations are popular year after year, but there are also "bubblers", i.e. new destinations that suddenly become hot. Ticket Privatresor presents the ten destinations that are increasing the most in percentage terms of the destinations that are in places 11-100 of the Swedes' most booked destinations this summer.
We present the destinations along with our own comments. Have you been to any of these places or are you thinking of visiting any of them?
Table of contents
1. Gdansk, Poland
Bookings to Gdansk have increased by 433 per cent, albeit from relatively small volumes. Ticket explains this with the fact that it is an affordable destination with both beach and city life, and that SAS has started a direct route.
Our commentWe really love the beautiful and charming city of Gdansk, which we have visited many times. Please read about our last visit to Gdansk in September 2014.
2. Toulouse, France
The fact that Toulouse is a rocket this summer is linked to the European Football Championship. Bookings there more than doubled this summer and here Ticket can see a real Zlatan effect.
Our commentWe love the food, culture and nature in France, but have never been to Toulouse. Please read our travel tips for France.
3. Pisa, Italy
Pisa is a university town in Tuscany in western Italy. The most famous attraction is of course the leaning tower, but it's not far from the coast either.
Our commentWe've never been to Pisa or this coastline, so we've left that for the future. We also see that there is a ferry line from here (Livorno) to wonderful Corsica!
4. Lisbon, Portugal
Bookings to Lisbon have increased by 111 per cent and according to Ticket, Lisbon offers winding alleys, tiled walls, trams, seafood restaurants and sun and swimming within easy reach.
Our commentWe visited Lisbon in January 2015 and fell in love with this charming capital city! Have a look at the blog Bortugal if you want to read about life in Portugal, where Åsa recently wrote about renting and travelling with a campervan.
5. Sardinia, Italy
Sardinia is a Mediterranean island that has been attracting tourists for many years due to its beautiful beaches and clear waters.
Our commentWe travelled around most of Sardinia during our 2015 European trip and fell in love with this beautiful island. Please read our travel tips for Sardinia.
6. Nice, France
The same goes for Nice and Toulouse. The fact that these French cities are rockets this summer is due to the European Football Championship and the Zlatan effect.
Our comment: We drove through Nice on an early morning in May to take the the ferry to Corsica. We didn't get to see much of the city, but enough to notice the beautiful seafront.
7. Tehran, Iran
Tehran has grown by 97 per cent and industry experts predict that Iran will become increasingly popular as a country with a rich history, culture and nature. So far, travellers are mostly people with ties to the country.
Our comment: We have been curious about Iran for a long time, but unfortunately we have never been there.
8. Algarve, Portugal
The Algarve is the region on the southern coast of Portugal, where you'll find beautiful beaches, several nice tourist resorts and at the same time slightly lower prices than in many other European countries.
Our commentWe spent almost a month and a half on the Algarve coast last year and enjoyed Albufeira, among other places. Please read our travel tips fisland of Portugal.
9th Almeria, Spain
Almeria is both a city and a province in Andalusia in south-west Spain. On the Costa de Almeria there are various holiday resorts for sun and sea, such as Roquetas de Mar, Almerimar and Aguadulce.
Our comment: We spent some nice days in Roquetas de Mar and in Auguadulce last year, but it the endless sea of plastic-covered greenhouses that covers everything in the surroundings and never ends is incredibly boring.
10. Oahu, Hawaii
The American state of Hawaii, in the Pacific Ocean, is made up of nothing but islands. This is a destination that attracts paradise beaches and palm trees.
Our commentWe've never been to Hawaii and beautiful beaches are always great, but it's still not a destination that's high on our bucket list.

Berit says:
Nice inspiration, have been to most of these places, actually even Iran many years ago, but definitely not something I long to return to!
We were charmed by Krakow, so it will probably be Gdansk as well eventually....

Rantamor on the retina says:
So good that you recommend new travel destinations, as always you get a little curious, but this year it will be a little air with the motorhome in Norway and Finland. Then maybe we take a flight to Barcelona where the daughter is in life right now.

Agree with you on Almeria.
I would like to visit Sardinia, I have a friend there and would love to see her.
Some of the other targets I have been to.
Not going to write my usual comment about which goal is missing, hi, hi. It's getting boring and you already know which one!
Have a nice day! Here in Spain it is raining!!!

Mr Steve says:
It's nice to read and be reminded of trips I've made and at the same time realise how much the world has changed... Iran and Poland were definitely not in the travel plans in "my time".
Nice, Lisbon and Albufeira are places I holidayed in during the 70s and 80s. Remember them all with fondness.
Lisbon is the most laid-back city in my experience. A then "quiet" city, but with a huge variety of things to do, from fado restaurants in Alfama to fantastic historical monuments and the Avenida da Liberdade, this mighty street/boulevard that I will always remember.
Albufeira , a then charming small town, offered fantastic beaches with fascinating rock formations and restaurants with heavenly fish dishes.
I found Nice to be a comfortable place for luxury travellers.

Pisa, Tolouse and Nice (where we saw Zlatan and PSG beat Nice) are places I have visited.
We are in Nice several times every summer as we have a summer house on the Italian side not far from Nice.
I definitely want to visit Sardinia, also Lisbon, never been to Portugal.
There were party boats to Gdansk in the 80s when I lived in Karlskrona, but I never went ashore, unfortunately.

I've always wanted to go to Hawaii and Sardinia. Yes, why not Pisa. The other destinations I've been to and seen. Oh, except for Iran. I forgot about that. Well, that's interesting. Thanks for the tips. Hugs

Ditte says:
What a nice list! I have visited the places you have listed and a few more times, but I have not made it to Tehran.
As for Hawaii, I would suggest a short visit to Oahu, the main island, and then hop between Kauwai, Maui and Hawaii, the big island.
I've been to the islands a few times so that's enough because there are many other islands that are just as exciting or more ...
I would love to return to Sardinia, as well as the Algarve coast and Nice and the surrounding area. Corsica is not included but an island I like to return to.
As far as Almeria is concerned, I fully agree (Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza are much more beautiful, as are many other areas not covered in plastic).

Evy Knoph, oh what fun! I didn't know what ELO was, but I asked Peter and he knew 😉 What fun that you are going to Gdansk too, it's a city we really love!
Lina, we really like Gdansk! Next time we visit Poland it would be exciting to visit somewhere new maybe 😉.
Lennart, Sweden is beautiful now! But for my part, the winds can be a bit warmer 😉.
Åsa, right? We liked Lisbon a lot! A very charming and relaxed city, quite different from how European capitals usually feel.
Berit, interesting that you have been to Iran. I can also understand that it's not an easy country to travel in... Absolutely, recommend a visit to Gdansk! I actually like that city even more than Krakow, although Krakow is also nice!
Rantamor, it sounds wonderful with a motorhome trip to Norway and Finland! And of course Barcelona does not sound stupid either! 🙂
Lena in Wales, great if you have a friend in Sardinia, I think you should definitely go there! And yes, we know which destination you mean 😉 (And we also hope to get there sometime!).
Steve, how nice to hear how you experienced these destinations! I'm glad you liked Portugal, and those places don't sound completely different when you describe them from how we experienced them.
Anette, it sounds very nice with a summer house near Nice! 🙂 We can definitely recommend Sardinia and Lisbon!
Alexandra, glad you've been to Pisa and that you liked it! I actually can't remember hearing about so many people having been there...
Veiken, haha, there are so many destinations in the world! It is perhaps lucky that you have some left 😉 😉
Biggeros, then you have had time to look around a lot! 🙂
Ditte, great to hear your tips about Hawaii among other things! Yes, when we drove with the motorhome through Almeria, we were kind of scared... Then there were some nice places, but it was so boring with this surrounding plastic sea....

BP says:
I'm not surprised that Gdansk has grown so much. The ferry leaves from Nynäshamn and it is incredibly cheap to live in Poland. Also, both you and I have done lots of advertising for Gdansk and Sopot;-)
The Algarve coast I also understand, as well as Lisbon. Portugal is cheap, as is Spain!
The touristy Hawaii doesn't appeal to me at all, but AMA de Casa has discovered some other things there that I didn't know existed.
Iran doesn't appeal to me at all - unfortunately.
20 April 2016 - 21:14
admin says:
BP, yes it is probably you and I who have attracted travellers to Poland! 😉 We have actually talked warmly about this destination for a long time! We also think it is a nice destination that is also cheap and close. I do not know how it works to travel to Iran now, but I have a certain curiosity that may be based on books and Iranians I have met. It will be interesting to see what Lena writes on her blog 🙂.
