How would you like your hotel breakfast?
I often say that I prefer quality over quantity at a hotel breakfast, so I'd rather have one really good juice and one good muesli than billions of juices and cereals... Some sort of eggs is a necessity and a little local surprise can also be fun! How would you like your breakfast in a hotel?
Goatfish says:
I like to go for the hot food first. Like eggs and bacon. Scrambled eggs, if they're not powdered. Organic muesli and natural yoghurt, topped with sliced banana.
Plenty of coffee with a little milk in it. An exotic fruit. No juice, but water.
Have a nice summer day! Love, Gerd

Jennifer - Swedish in Helsinki says:
God how I agree with that, a small but really really good breakfast beats a gigantic one every time. Maybe mainly because I think it is so hard with the decision anxiety that arises and that the stomach has limited space 😉.
I like it when they have air-dried ham and salmon, things that are a bit more luxurious for breakfast at home. Or exciting müslis + nuts, and good bread of course.

By the way! Scrambled eggs... So HOW do you know if it is made from powder?

Love it when there are choices. Coffee with sandwich, cereal, hot breakfast, fruit...
Who could be dissatisfied?

I eat very little breakfast at home, but when I'm in a hotel, I feast. Of course, I want a good breakfast tea, a selection of bread and cold cuts, and preferably scrambled eggs and something warm. So it's nice if there's fruit to finish off with. I don't need an abundance either, but quality is important!

Ama de casa says:
Most important for me is the chocolate croissant! Haha! Actually, I am not a breakfast person, want to wake up properly before I can eat so much. Surprised myself with how much I ate at the breakfast buffet on the cruise ...
But that with the chocolate croissant... I have never had a sweet tooth before, but since I got on the verge of diabetes and got to know that I should avoid sugar, then the craving came as a letter in the mail 🙂 In hotels I like to cheat it with one of those slimy things, but at home we never have such things at home. Easiest way to avoid, so to speak 🙂.

Ann-Sofie says:
A good breakfast buffet is when you have to go a few rounds before you know what you want. Or where to start!
Really good coffee is a big plus. Powdered espresso in tiny cups just feels silly for breakfast.
Incidentally, this is also the reason why we will never get a Nespresso. Three caps for a cup of breakfast coffee???

In addition to the list above which is what really should be on the hotel breakfast, I have to tell you about an unforgettable 'lightly fried porridge with dried fruit with even light raisins' that I ate at the Best Western hotel at the Grand Canyon in the USA, fantastically good and filling! Then you could stare and wander around the canyon for any length of time!

Mr Steve says:
The days of hotel breakfasts are over for me, but there have been many over the years. Mostly at work in the 90s when I had "my home" in a hotel for several years.
Importantly, youghurt, a not over-sweetened muesli, a good coffee, freshly squeezed juice, freshly baked bread, boiled egg (not over or under cooked), caviar, a fresh and tasty cheese and a good marmalade. With a start like that, it was usually a good day.

Renate's travels says:
Hehe, I'm in heaven if there is freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh fruit and scrambled eggs!
In Luleå I once also found freshly baked sponge cake on the breakfast buffet table! ;D

Geddfish, I also like scrambled eggs and of course they vary in taste. But how can you tell for sure if it is made from powder?
Jennifer, I totally agree about the extra luxurious things like salmon and air-dried ham, which you might not have at home. Also wondering about the scrambled eggs. Sometimes it is definitely worse, is that when it is simply powder?
Aila, yes that is what is good about a buffet of course. Everyone is satisfied 😉 (Although sometimes I think there are too many choices ;))
Znogge, I also drink tea in the morning 🙂 ðŸ™'
Ama de casa, but how typical that you should be more hungry for such things now...! I'm sometimes a bit jealous of people who go without food in the morning. I'm so hungry when I wake up that I have to eat before I manage to take a step almost 😉.
Ann-Sofie, haha, I probably also want more coffee when I drink coffee, but in the morning I want tea (I have come to the conclusion that this is due to my low blood sugar in the morning, I absolutely cannot handle coffee then, haha). But Peter drinks coffee in the morning!
Lena, it didn't sound very tasty, haha, but luckily it was! 🙂
Steve, reading your line-up makes me hungry 😉.
Renates Reiser, I was actually surprised that cakes/sweets were not on the list. After all, they are often available and many people like them, right?

Admin, you can read here about semi-finished scrambled eggs, which can feel like - in my opinion - mashed potatoes.

I want quality, other than that it can vary. I think the best breakfast is at a hotel in Mariestad. Home-baked bread, a heavenly oven omelette with shrimp stew and some other goodies! What is the name of the hotel? Well, Vänerport!

What a fun post, fun with the statistics. I did not know that fruit was so high on the list, that's great!
The most important thing for me is fruit! I am crazy about fruit and berries, I also appreciate a harmonious environment to wake up to, freshly squeezed orange juice, yoghurt with muesli and calm and friendly staff.
I also blog about travelling and adventures, feel free to have a look at http://www.nannymctraveling.wordpress.com
Have a good time?

I love having pancakes (or pancakes as the rest of you call them) for breakfast. Preferably with cream and strawberry jam, because otherwise it may not matter. Ate with nutella last time I stayed at the Sheraton in Stockholm but not nearly as good! And freshly squeezed orange juice!

Lennart says:
Haven't stayed in a hotel since we got a motorhome.
However, we have had hotel breakfasts in several different countries.
You can have breakfast without drinking.
Scrambled eggs with bacon is probably our favourite!

Ruth in Virginia says:
A good omelette is probably the best thing in the world.
and then fresh fruit such as melon, papaya, pineapple plus berries (in season).
Thin pancakes with raspberry or strawberry jam and whipped cream,
in Sweden. Probably not available in hotels, unfortunately.

Ditte says:
I prefer to avoid buffets where I have to queue. I am very fond of the concept of ordering what I want à la carte and having the food delivered to a beautifully set table.
A freshly made omelette is good, as well as fresh fruit, freshly squeezed juice .
Freshly baked pancakes with exotic fruits or, if I'm in Sweden, fresh berries, I like to swap them for an omelette.
I also appreciate the variety of coffee to choose from and the fact that the coffee is hot and freshly brewed.
In the Philippines, Friday's hotel, I have probably had the best hotel breakfast.
It was calm and quiet, which is also important for a good breakfast and service-minded staff.
Fun list!
I received a similar survey from Vingresor....

Anette says:
I like the fact that hotels don't have the same type of breakfast but differ from place to place. I used to love scrambled eggs and bacon but I'm tired of that. I like to come home to Swedish hotels and get good yoghurt, I also want fresh fruit. I haven't adopted the Asian breakfast with noodles or rice yet, otherwise I think most things are good.

Krister in Beijing says:
I most appreciate the (unfortunately few) hotels where you are served a "package" at your table. Much nicer than walking around and picking in a buffet. It does not have to be so insanely many different things that are served, but good quality of what is served. I agree with what many write above that freshly squeezed orange juice is a divider between the good and the less good hotels.
Regards

Geddfish, huh that didn't sound very tempting...! Thanks for the link!
Veiken, omelette with shrimp stew sounds deliciously worse! Too bad you haven't planned to stay at a hotel in Mariestad soon then 😉.
Julia, thanks for the link to your blog! I will of course check it out!
Helena, do you mean that there is a dialectal difference or? (For me, pancakes are small and pancakes are big...)
Lennart, of course you can eat hotel breakfast anyway! At least once in a while, it feels a bit luxurious 😉.
Ruth in Virginia, don't know how common it is with pancakes in hotels in Sweden? Very unusual for us to stay in a hotel here....
Ditte, I can understand what you mean about buffets where you have to queue. I'm also not too keen on very large buffets with lots of people. However, I can appreciate smaller buffets with good quality.
Anette, of course it is nice if it differs a little, I think so too! That it is not EXACTLY the same everywhere 😉 I have also eaten some Asian breakfast buffets. It can be a little fun for a change, but I usually don't want rice or noodles in the morning either....
Rolle o Carina, it doesn't sound too difficult to make you happy at breakfast 😉.
Krister in Beijing, I agree that it is quite unusual to be served a package at the table (although my pictures above are from such breakfasts). I can also like it, except that I've often been told that it's not included but that you have to pay extra....

Definitely good, strong coffee and freshly squeezed juice. Hot dishes such as scrambled eggs/bacon/sausages should be really hot and not lukewarm. Like you, I prefer quality over quantity. I'm not really a fan of buffets where everyone coughs and sniffles at the food, but...
10 May 2016 - 21:20
Across the board says:
Good coffee and cheese and I'm happy.
But usually I eat much more than normal breakfasts when I'm in a hotel, but then you can luxuriate in it with both file, muesli, fruits, eggs, bacon and maybe even a croissant that slips down to your (three) toes 😉.
10 May 2016 - 21:34
admin says:
Matts, motorhome breakfast is not bad either! 😉
BP, I'm not really fond of buffets either and rarely want them at dinner. At breakfast it is common, and then I like small quality buffets that feel fresh 😉.
By golly, it doesn't sound too difficult to make you happy at breakfast 😉 But I agree, if you eat a hotel breakfast it will be a bit more than usual.

Casa Annika says:
Kalaspuffar.
It sounds like I'm joking now, or like I'm ten years old, but it's true. I like potato pancakes so much that I never, ever buy them. And if there are kale puffs at the hotel breakfast, my day couldn't start any better.

Casa Annika, haha, hope you find kalas puffs on the buffet sometimes then! 😉

Yes, there is a dialectal difference. For me, plättar are the big round ones, while pancake is made in a long pan in the oven. Then the smallest ones are small plates for me.

Exciting post 🙂 Yes good coffee and fruit is very important but can not understand that good juice is so far down the list. Love the hotels where you can squeeze your own juice so you can combine fruit with vegetables.
