Yesterday we celebrated Midsummer Eve for the first time at home in the houseboat. Our good friends Lennart and Beata came to visit and there was both herring lunch and dinner on deck, with a test of a slightly new midsummer menu ...
Sillunch - with some new features
We started with a herring lunch with classics like new potatoes, herring and nubbe. We also wanted to try something new and it was fun to try, but honestly, it didn't turn out as well as we had hoped. We made a salmon scramble with apple and egg halves with three different toppings (avocado, anchovy and rum/smoked salmon) from Buffé magazine. The avocado on egg was a bit ... cheesy? Rum and smoked salmon was the favourite!
We also mixed a summer punch from Buffé magazine with tonic, pork juice and rhubarb juice. Delicious, and perfect as a non-alcoholic drink between rounds (although some preferred to spike it) ...
Barbecue dinner ... without a grill
Amazingly, we were able to sit outside all day even though it was a bit overcast. In the evening we had planned to have a barbecue ... but it turned out that the gas had run out (why does it always run out at the wrong time?).
Luckily, you can cook beef fillet in the oven too! As a side dish, we had baked potatoes, green asparagus and two cold sauces (garlic and chilli). For dessert we had a small trifle with white chocolate mousse and strawberries.
What was your midsummer menu like? Do you have any classics that absolutely must on the midsummer table or did you dare to try something new this year?
Goatfish says:
Gomorron in the cabin/boat 😉 .
That's what the eye wanted, everything looked delicious and people with a twinkle in their eye, too.
Avocado is very tasty but perhaps required a little more spices together with eggs...
Now I'm about to get dressed for church and send you a signpost Sunday hug 😀.

Diana'sDreams says:
Cosy you have it 🙂 hugs
26 June 2016 - 8:15
Matts Torebring says:
We celebrated almost like you, but on "solid ground" in France. Surely it must feel a little, a little rocking in the boat. The French prawns surprised us. They were quite large and not as salty as we are used to. We have actually never had eggs on the midsummer table either. We'll try that next year.
26 June 2016 - 8:21
Lennart says:
Herring lunch is a tradition!
26 June 2016 - 8:50
Lisa / life from the bright side says:
Cosy midsummer!
Herring and such, but also salmon cake and Västerbotten pie. So good!
26 June 2016 - 9:06
Channal says:
Lovely midsummer! Sounds really cosy with a houseboat. Love the sea and water. So peaceful and beautiful. Imagine waking up every morning to it.
Hugs Anna
26 June 2016 - 9:13
Mum C says:
Herring is a tradition, along with new potatoes. They were also lucky with the weather. Today the rain is here, but it was needed.
26 June 2016 - 9:14
Erase says:
Oh, I can imagine that avocado on eggs will not be a taste sensation but the other sounded fantastic!
We had a classic herring lunch but also some onion roe on toast. For dinner we had barbecue and a pie with rhubarb, strawberries and white chocolate.
26 June 2016 - 9:17
Ama de casa says:
It really looked both tasty and nice. Running out of gas is very typical, but as long as you have a plan B, it doesn't matter much.
We had a traditional midsummer table with, among other things, several kinds of herring, eggs and jansson (both regular and cauliflower variant). There was also beer and nubbe 🙂.

admin says:
Geddfish, that's right, we love avocado, but it probably works better in other contexts 😉 Have a nice Sunday!
Diana's dreams, yes it is cosy to live on a houseboat! 🙂 Wish you a nice Sunday!
Matts, during our entire European trip last year we missed Swedish prawns. The shrimp in the south are mostly good for wok and gratin and stuff like that according to us 😉.
Lennart, a wonderful tradition!
Lisa, salmon cake and Västerbotten pie also sound really good!!!
Channal, we also loved being by the water, and maybe that's why we love living on a houseboat 🙂 .
Mum C, we also have rain today, but it feels almost ok after yesterday's heat 😉.
Oh, onion roe on toast can never be wrong! 😉 That pie sounded awesome too! I love rhubarb...
Ama de casa, yes it was lucky that we had a backup for the gas... (it's worse in the motorhome where the whole kitchen runs on gas ;)) Jansson is also good. We made it the other day, when we had a herring lunch with the neighbours.

Karin Eklund says:
Firstly, I like the header! A lot!
Secondly, I notice that I have lots of reading here....
and have noted this on a sticky note! I'm going to sit down
at the computer and read during my afternoon coffee break.
Have a nice day!

Mr Steve says:
How deliciously you have organised it. And what a great setting for Midsummer's meals.
Herring lunch is also one of our regular features. In recent years pies have been added, this year Västerbotten pie and seafood pie. And finish with strawberries. In the evening there will be something grilled.
This year we also organised a picnic on Midsummer's Day.
26 June 2016 - 9:50
Violen on Brandholmen says:
How cosy it looks! Here we also had herring for lunch and beef fillet when it was time for dinner.
26 June 2016 - 10:11
Gunnel says:
No midsummer without herring. Looks cosy. Stay well,
26 June 2016 - 10:32
nils-åke hansson says:
Traditionally it was here BUT the grilled food was only accompanied by salad in the evening.

Karin Eklund, glad to hear that you like the picture and our blog! Wishing you a nice Sunday!
Steve, Västerbotten pie and seafood pie sounds super tasty! Maybe it will be pie for us one year too! 😉
Violen on Brandholmen, we have a cosy time on the houseboat! And herring and beef fillet is not wrong!
Gunnel, agree! I also think that the herring is most important 🙂 .
Nils-Åke, it can be good too! There is usually a lot of food anyway 😉.
Mrs Eriksson, thank you very much!

Anita Malta says:
So very cosy to be able to celebrate midsummer as you do and with good accessories. Herring is probably the only thing I can really miss here in Malta, well, the pickled one that is 🙂 There was not much celebration for our part but a little because it was our wedding day. Have a really nice continued weekend 😀
26 June 2016 - 11:16
Snows says:
What a nice midsummer evening and it also looked good! The lake sucks as they say 😀.
26 June 2016 - 11:21
Åsa says:
Haha! Funny picture the last one! We had hamburgers for lunch. We usually do that. We are usually on our way out to the country and stop and have lunch at "GylleneMåsen" in Barkarby. It was always fun to post on Facebook, a family photo from MacD in Barkarby as a contrast to everyone else's midsummer lunch. For dinner, I don't remember.
26 June 2016 - 11:30
Emma, sun like sun? says:
The barbecue worked here anyway! But we didn't eat any fish. My strawberry cake with tiramisu cream was very good, though!
26 June 2016 - 11:40
Jessica Meijer says:
Fantastic!
So much good food and a wonderful weather, right on the water.
Have a nice Sunday!
Big hug
Jessica

Ditte says:
And you were lucky with the weather too!
Very good food. Beef fillet in the oven is just as good ...
You look like you are having a great time and the lake view is extra nice.
New potatoes and strawberries are part of midsummer, but herring is eaten at Christmas and Easter as well as whenever the mood strikes.
For me, there are no direct musts, but seafood always fits. Here it was homemade salmon, jansson, pickled herring, meatballs and of course lots of strawberries.
I can't wait for new potatoes but we harvested our 10 in a pot in April.
I would have liked to be by the sea because that's part of Midsummer, as well as sailing. But you can't have everything.
Now the broken foot is also an obstacle.
26 June 2016 - 12:08
admin says:
Anita Malta, herring may well be difficult to find in southern latitudes. Unless you have an IKEA nearby, that is 😉 Congratulations on your wedding day!!!
Znogge, yes that's why we are always hungry here, hehe 😉.
Åsa, it was a different midsummer lunch I must say, but it can also be fun to have your own traditions 😉.
Emma sun like sun, great that the grill worked! And the cake sounds good!!!
Jessica Meijer, there is nothing wrong with the location and you should take the opportunity to enjoy it when you can 😉.
Ditte, yes, of course you eat the same food on all holidays 😉 It's probably because that's what was available in the past... Today the range is huge, and you can add some new ideas if you want. Homemade salmon sounds good! Hope the foot gets better soon!

Across the board says:
The only thing that is a "must" is strawberries and it has been difficult to get some years if the spring was early in Spain. This year, however, we have had strawberries all the time ☺.

musician says:
There was pizza on Midsummer's Day because her husband Kent, daughter Mirren and Casimir, the eldest of the youngest grandchildren, are vegetarians. I would have liked to taste some of your midsummer table - I'm not a vegetarian but I eat like the others. On Midsummer's Eve, Kent and I were alone and only ate (good) leftovers from the birthday party. Good tip about the non-alcoholic drink - will definitely try it. Have lots of rhubarb in the garden....

Carina says:
For the last five years we have preferred to eat midsummer lunch at Wärldshuset in Jukkasjärvi and there is everything and now I really mean everything. A buffet with cold and hot dishes rounded off with desserts and of course something with strawberries. The same arrangement as a Christmas table.
26 June 2016 - 16:48
BP says:
Sounds like a great midsummer menu, with my personal favourite being deviled eggs with anchovy cream.
I think herring is a must for Midsummer. So this year it was lamb steak provencale here with us.

Annie says:
Sounds and looks cosy 🙂
A: sounds good too, but personally I'm more in favour of wine 😉.

Roland Lindskog says:
No, this is not about food. We are in the left lane of the campsite conversada because you wrote that the naturist campsite was out on the island but the whole campsite was for naturists out again the right lane to porto sole. As it can go. Regards Rolle & Brittan

Natalia, you should enjoy when you can 🙂 .
Lovisa, exciting (even if I prefer real herring myself ;)).
Comsi Comsa, that wasn't a bad idea 😉.
Across the board, strawberries are definitely a must! At our ICA they raised the price the day before Midsummer's Eve which was a bit annoying, but...
Musikanta, pizza and vegetarian can also be good, but I want to vary with other things! But understand that it affects when many in the family are vegetarians.
Carina, it sounds nice! and a little luxurious to not have to fix everything 😉.
BP, herring is definitely a must! And next year we go for lamb instead of oxfile, we were not completely satisfied with the oxfile but lamb is always good!
Annie, of course you should find what you like!
Roland Lindskog, Koversada is the naturist campsite and Porto Sole is the "regular" campsite and they are next to each other (same owner). In the post I have written "naturist campsite with its own island", because there is its own island inside the campsite. Sorry if I have been unclear in any way!
June girl, it was good too (and also the leftovers that we ate today ;))

Oh how cosy 🙂 we were at my sister's with her husband so they had everything good on the table so we ate of all the things that are used to have 🙂 yes a houseboat sounds absolutely wonderful and travelling is like reading a book 🙂 have a nice evening hugs.

Decdia says:
This year I tried herring... I'm trying to learn to like fish, but it's slow going. New potatoes, sour cream and onions are musts for me! Then a piece of meat is a bonus. I can actually do without strawberries but eat a couple just for the sake of it. 🙂
26 June 2016 - 20:08
admin says:
Polly, thank you, we think it's a luxury to live like this and of course make sure we enjoy it when we can!
Adopt Snaque, life has its bright spots, and you should take the opportunity to enjoy them! 🙂
Eva, that sounds nice! We love living on a houseboat and I agree with you about travelling and books. Reading is travelling! 😉
Decdia, you're tough to try, I think! I love herring (and fish) but if you don't like it, you don't do it. Fortunately, there are a lot of other good things here in the world, and so you may well try a little sometimes and see if you change your mind 😉.

Sounds like a very cosy midsummer! Nice to try something new. I had a period before when I made at least one completely new recipe every week. It was very exciting and we found new favourites. Now for Midsummer we didn't make much food but cold boiled salmon, herring, meatballs and potatoes. Grilled beef fillet in the evening.
Have a great week!

Auntie Glad, the weather has been better than expected. Wishing you a great week too!
Mia's mix, it's fun to try out new recipes, but I don't always have the inspiration/time. Cold boiled salmon is good!
Marina, yes absolutely! Wishing you a great week!
