Gdynia in Poland
Gdynia, along with Gdansk and Sopot, is part of the so-called 'tri-city' and is a perfect starting point for lovely days on the Polish Riviera. The city offers a pleasant experience with a marina, a big Ferris wheel, huge shopping malls, lots of fish restaurants and a nice sandy beach in the centre of town.
Gdynia is located on the Polish Baltic Sea coast, 22 kilometres north of Gdansk.
What to do in Gdynia?
So, what can you do in Gdynia, Poland? This city offers many opportunities, especially in summer. Here are our top tips.
1. strolling in the harbour
We walked to the harbour in Gdynia, where there are lots of small boats. Here we saw a lot of children practising with optimist dinghies. Here you can also see the big Ferris wheel that rises above the city.
2. Check out museum ships
In another part of the harbour, you can find the museum ship ORP Błyskawica, which took part in the Second World War, and the museum ship Dar Pomorza, a full-rigger from the early 20th century.
3. Sunbathing and swimming at Gdynia City Beach
Right in the centre of Gdynia you will find the city's city beach. This is a fine sandy beach, with lovely fine-grained sand, and as it is located in the centre of the city, it is naturally popular. On a sunny summer day, you can expect it to be crowded both on the beach and in the water.
4. shopping
Gdynia is the city for those who like to shop! There are two large shopping centres. The shopping centre Riviera is the largest shopping centre in northern Poland. Here you will find no less than 250 shops, which is far more than you will find in any Swedish mall. In the Mall of Scandinavia in Solna outside Stockholm, for example, there are "only" 170 shops, as a comparison. Another slightly smaller shopping centre in Gdynia is Galeria Klif, with many luxury shops in a pleasant environment.
5. Enjoy Polish food in a restaurant
In Poland it is often nice to go to a restaurant, as the food often tastes good and is affordable. In Gdynia we found a nice restaurant by the beach and had a really good dinner.
For starters we both chose salmon carpaccio. For the main course I (Helena) chose halibut, Peter walleye and our friends prawns. Here on the coast in Poland, restaurants serve a lot of fish. The fish is often served with some kind of potatoes and vegetables or root vegetables. Relatively simple, but almost always delicious!
6. try beer
After the restaurant visit, we went on to a place nearby, where you can buy a small tray with four different small beers for tasting. Two of the beers were not really to our taste, but it was a fun thing. In addition, it was affordable!
7. Visit a museum
Do you like museums? Then you know what to do in Gdynia. There is a wide range of museums to choose from. Check out one of these, for example:
- Centre Nauki Experyment, Aleja Zwycięstwa 96/98
- Gdynia City Museum, Zawiszy Czarnego 1
- Gdynia Motor Museum, Żwirowa 2C
- Museum of Emigration, Poland 1
- Naval Museum, Zawiszy Czarnego 1B
8. Take an excursion to Gdansk
Not far from Gdynia is the beautiful old Hanseatic city of Gdansk. This city was founded in the 13th century and had its heyday in the Middle Ages. Although the city was largely destroyed during World War II, it has been restored to its former beauty.
Today, you can hang out in cosy restaurants, stroll around the harbour area or maybe even catch the intensive market which is organised in August each year.
9. Take an excursion to Sopot
Sopot is perhaps the most exclusive holiday resort on the entire Polish Riviera. On the long, fine sandy beach is the Grand Hotel and Europe's longest wooden pier. In Sopot you will also find a long, beautiful promenade and lots of nice restaurants.
More things to see and do in Gdynia
There is of course even more to see and do in Gdynia than our suggestions. Here are some more tips.
- Adventure Park Gdynia offers various adventurous activities for all adrenaline lovers. (Bernadowska 1)
- Aquapark Reda is a large water park in Reda, just outside Gdynia (Morska 5, 84-240 Reda).
- Gdynia Aquarium is an aquarium where you can see different kinds of fish, marine animals and reptiles (al. Jana Pawła II 1).
- Kamienna Gora is an exclusive neighbourhood located on a hill, which can be reached by cable car.
- Kępa Redłowska is a large green park by the sea, south of Gdynia.
- Orłowo Pier is a long wooden pier in a southern part of the city.
Where can you stay or park your motorhome?
We have never stayed overnight in Gdynia, but there is a campsite called Wypoczynek "U Wnuka". There are also many different hotels and other accommodation options in town.
More to see and do in the neighbourhood
As well as the other cities in the Tri-City, Gdansk and Sopot, there are many other great places to visit nearby. For example, you can visit the historic Malbork Castle, experience the glorious The entire peninsula or take refuge in a holiday resort Łeba. I say as many times before, Poland has been an underrated holiday destination for too long! Now Scandinavians seem to have got the point and Poland will increase its tourism significantly for each season. That's what I think 🙂

Lennart says:
Poland is high on the list!
28 July 2016 - 8:33
Ama de casa says:
Looked very nice there! And affordable 🙂 For us who live in Spain, it is usually more expensive to go abroad when you look at the food and drink prices.
And that beach almost had a bit of a Cura warning on it 😀.

nils-åke hansson says:
We still have to drive in Poland. Beer mins when we were at Nørrebro Bryghus in Copenhagen also got beer that was strong. I did not like all the varieties we got.

Evy Knoph says:
Yes, my mother's country has surprised me positively both when I was in Wroclaw in January and now in Gdansk/Sopot... These two dinners we have eaten here are some of the best I have eaten in my entire life...probably took the most expensive in the entire old town almost when I hit a (Holland house) chateaubriand with foie gras and asparagus for 69 zloty (×ca 2.2) ...cosy cities to roam around in. Today it will probably be a trip to Galeria Baltica..then we get off at the train station that can not be pronounced (Poles on the train helped us with it yesterday and we laughed together) Wrzeszcz and if we try clothes we will visit a przymierzalnia :-). Have a nice holiday!

Linnea, we really agree with you and I also think Poland will increase. Close, cheap and nice beaches. The only downside is that there is no guarantee for the weather 😉.
Lennart, quite right I think! 🙂
Ama de casa, Spain is cheap when it comes to food and drink, so I understand that. But here is probably not more expensive 😉 (However, less sun-proof)
Nils-Åke, you can't like everything, but at least it's nice that you didn't pay too much 😉.
Evy Knoph, your comment first went into the bin, but now I have found and approved it! So, this is your mum's country? But you don't speak Polish? How nice that we are here at the same time! Poland really has a lot to offer, and that dish sounds fantastic! 🙂
28 July 2016 - 10:03
Ditte says:
Understand that you have a good time! As Ama wrote, there is a little "Curavarning" (the beach in the city of Torrevieja) on the beach. But fully understandable that everyone wants to go there in the nice weather.
And it's great to have a beach in the city centre and several restaurants by the sea.
The price situation seems to be similar to Spain and that often means going out to eat.
It's nice to have good food, because that's part of the journey. And trying different beers isn't a bad idea either, even though they may not all be your favourites.

Oh! What a folkabus gem! Thank you very much! We have seen that there are still a few on the roads, now that we are on the road ourselves. Fun! Have a good time!

Ditte, food and drink is cheap in Spain. It is probably at least as cheap here, and certainly it is easier to eat out often if it does not make too big a hole in the wallet. There are beaches both in the cities and outside, so you can choose whether you want a lot of people around you or a little 😉.
Kicki, I think so! Poland is nice 🙂
Fantasy travel, the coast is our favourite in Poland! I've only visited Warsaw briefly about 20 years ago, but I've become more keen after reading your posts and seeing your pictures 🙂.
Marie, the hat is super nice! Haha, who knows, let's see if you fall on such a hat sometime 😉 .
Anja, isn't it nice? Yes, you do see nice folk buses on the road from time to time. Where are you travelling? Have a good time!

BP says:
Yes, I recognise myself here. I actually like Gdynia better than Gdansk, although I know that Gdansk people don't like Gdynia at all.
The food on that entire coastline is absolutely outstanding. It is cheaper to eat out there than it is here to buy the ingredients in the shop and cook the food yourself. We also ate almost exclusively fish dishes there. Often dishes that we did not know what they contained and that we pointed to.
28 July 2016 - 16:25
admin says:
BP, yes, I know you've been around these parts! However, I didn't know that Gdansk people don't like Gdynia 😉 We found it very nice in Gdynia and we also often choose fish. But we have the advantage of having a Polish speaker in the company who can translate if necessary 😉.
28 July 2016 - 16:55
Biggeros says:
So nice with beer tasting ?not so expensive if you can't drink up. We visited Gdynia 10 years ago. My husband guided us around and showed us where he went to school and lived as a young man. His father worked there for a few years. Nice town and even then food and drink was cheap?
28 July 2016 - 17:05
Marianne - Glimpses of the world says:
Last time I was in Poland, Gdynia was rejected in favour of a road trip to Słowiński National Park. It was a good choice, so Gdynia will have to wait until the next time I am in those areas. It seems like a nice city - but I would probably not like me on the crowded beach!
28 July 2016 - 17:50
admin says:
Biggeros, oh so your husband lived in Gdynia as a young man? Perfect with a guide! We also have a Polish-speaking "guide" with us (we live in our friends' holiday apartment, and Beata comes from Poland) but she has not grown up here.
Marianne, the national park sounds exciting! That's where the sandy desert is, isn't it? As for the beaches, there are beaches with less people if you just look outside the cities.
28 July 2016 - 18:33
Matts Torebring says:
You tempt us all the time. Although I like to come when the beach is not as crowded as it is now. We love travelling in the pre & post season.
28 July 2016 - 22:35
admin says:
Matts, there are advantages to the early and late season! But here in Poland you can also visit the beaches that are a bit outside the cities, like the one I showed yesterday in Rewa. Significantly less people 😉 .
28 July 2016 - 23:00
Susjos says:
What lovely pictures! The food looks so good. Now I know that it is to Poland you should go to get cheap food and drink 😉.
In California, it was anything but cheap!
29 July 2016 - 1:01
admin says:
Susjos, yes the prices are good in Poland and that makes it a bit easier/fun to eat out I think. Understand that it was not so cheap in California.

Steel city anna says:
Seems to be a great atmosphere and going well for Polish business in that city anyway! Otherwise you read so much negative. I really hope that Poland gets an economic boost.
30 July 2016 - 9:51
admin says:
Frankie & Co, glad we could "take you back" a bit 😉 .
Mrs Eriksson, thank you, yes it's really nice in Gdynia!
Steel City Anna, some negative things are happening in Polish politics, but it doesn't affect everything (not right now anyway). Here as a tourist you don't notice it at all, but it's a holiday atmosphere and full of hotels and restaurants.
