Handiscover - the travel portal with hotels for people with disabilities - started at the beginning of the year and is now expanding rapidly. Today there are 11 countries and 1600 bookable accommodations: apartments, houses, hotels and bed & breakfasts. We recently received a press release about the site and like the idea so much that we are happy to recommend it here.
The founder wanted to show his son the world
Handiscover.com was founded by Sebastien Achimbeaud, who has roots in both France and Sweden. He wanted to show the world to his son, who has a muscle disease, but found it difficult to find suitable holiday accommodation. When he started Handiscover, he wanted to increase everyone's freedom to travel by connecting those travelling with limited mobility with those who have suitable accommodation.
Choose how mobile you are
When you book accommodation on the site, you choose your level of mobility based on three levels: 1) You can climb stairs, maximum 15 steps, 2) You can manage one step at a time, or 3) You need fully adapted accommodation (suitable for wheelchair users).
Handiscover expands
Last spring, Sebastien raised the capital he needed to develop the business from Almi Invest and private investors. One concrete result is that Handiscover is now getting more and more destinations and adapted holiday accommodation in different parts of Europe and the world. Outside Europe, Handiscover is currently in the USA, Thailand and South Africa, with more to come.
"We are fast-paced and expanding rapidly. We have several big deals in the pipeline that will generate thousands of new properties," says Sebastien. The plan is to offer 10,000 holiday homes by the end of the year.

What a great initiative to start such a travel portal 😀.
You don't know how well you are doing as long as you are moving freely.

Mr Steve says:
It's great that such things exist. I certainly belong to the target group, but it's still not something that appeals to me. Of course, we disabled people are also different. A disability can have so many "roots", many of which are not visible.

You are fine if you can get around by yourself. I know a guy/man who needs two companions but he is travelling with his wheelchair (CP injury).

Lina - The world according to AdrenaLina says:
Very good initiative and great that you are spreading it further! I currently work as a personal assistant which has made it clear how much is not accessible and how much work is required to check the accessibility of different places. So anything that can help is great! (...although of course it would be better if everything was accessible).

A very good initiative and good that you are spreading it further. I hope they can also start marketing themselves to reach their target group.

Geddfish, that's right! It's easy to take what you have for granted.
Steve, I am fully aware that you do not want to travel today. Everyone is different, whether they have a disability or not, but I think it sounds very good for those who want to travel.
Nils-Åke, yes it is possible, but I'm sure it requires much more planning. Good when it can be facilitated in different ways!
Lina, in that job I understand that you become more aware of everything that is not accessible. In Sweden, everything that is built new must be made accessible, but there are of course lots of old buildings and abroad there are not the same rules....
Ditte, I guess they market themselves in different ways. I received a press release and it has been sent to various relevant recipients I guess.

What a great thing! 🙂
Here in the US, a lot of things are adapted for people with disabilities, but in Spain... There's a lot that can be done to make things easier.

Oh what a great thing! This is exactly what is good about blogs. To spread this kind of information. Whether you get paid to do it or not, it is noticeable that it is done with a desire to get an important message out 🙂.

Villa Freja, right?
Ama de casa, accessibility is probably very different in different countries.
BP, we liked the idea. It is not certain that accessibility is always good abroad. Hopefully this can help.
Christine's Stories, blogs are great for spreading information. However, we have not been paid for this. When we are paid, we state that the post was written in collaboration with xx companies.

Great - my father who after a road accident became wheelchair 'bound' and travelled a lot would have loved today's accessible information like this ❤.

Eliseabeth, that must make travelling easier, I think!
Frankie & Co, it's getting easier and easier to find information, and it's good to have places like this where you can gather information on a specific topic.

Great tips! Travelling can really be a big project. A lot of things that you don't think about until you try travelling with wheelchairs and other assistive devices. Just something like how cars park on pavements and then all the edges, bumps, slippery ground and I don't know everything. Hard enough in everyday life.
