Good hotels in Malta? When we visited Malta last week, we tried two different good hotels - one more luxurious and one more basic. Both were good depending on what you're looking for: an exclusive hotel with a spa and rooftop pool or a basic hotel at half the price.
Le Meridien in St Julians - luxury hotel in Malta
Le Meridien in St Julians is a large 5-star hotel with pools, SPA, welcome drink in the lobby and such modern high-tech lifts that it took us two turns before we really understood how they worked, haha.
- Location and viewsExcellent location in St Julians (perhaps the busiest and most touristy resort in Malta). We had a great view of the sea from our room.
- Rooms and bedsSpacious room and comfortable beds. Everything that should be in a better hotel room, but as usual a little short of electrical outlets and hangers.
- Bathroom: Spacious and fresh bathroom with jacuzzi tub.
- WiFi: Works quickly everywhere and is included in the price.
- breakfast: Enormous breakfast buffet with just the right amount of all including made-to-order omelettes and freshly squeezed juices and smoothies.
- Other services: Gym, SPA baths, SPA treatments and luxurious rooftop pool.
Chalet hotel in Sliema - simple but good hotel in Malta
Chalet Hotel in Sliema is a much simpler hotel, with a small simple reception and without any extra features. A really good location, friendly staff and well-functioning WiFi meant that we were still satisfied. We experienced this as a good hotel in Malta if you want a slightly more budget option.
- Location and viewsExcellent location in Sliema (also a tourist resort, near St Julians). Also here we had great views of the sea from our room.
- Rooms and beds: Ok room, but rather uncomfortable beds. No fridge.
- Bathroom: Ok, but not luxurious in any way.
- WiFi: Works quickly everywhere - free in a specific room and a small extra charge if you want it in your room.
- breakfast: Small buffet breakfast with the essentials, including some fruit and sweets.
- Other services: Roof terrace with great views, but uninspiringly decorated.
Hotels on the sister island of Gozo
If you are planning to visit Malta's sister island, the scenic and beautiful island of Gozo, we can recommend the spa hotel Ta' Cenc. Here you can experience beautiful nature, pools, spa and good food, and there are also several hiking trails.
We got some more tips on hotels in Gozo from the guide we had on the island. If you're looking for a 5-star hotel, there are Kempinski, located in the countryside with spas and pools. Otherwise, there are Calypso hotel or Maria Giovanna guesthouse in Marsalforn. There are also rural 'farm houses', which are cosy accommodation for families or groups of friends. Boran group should have many different farmhouses to choose from.
How do you prefer to stay when you are in a hotel? Do you prioritise a more luxurious hotel stay or are you a person who thinks "you shouldn't spend time in your room anyway"? Do you have experience with any other hotels in Malta?

Great tips for all the Maltese travellers you attract.
When I travelled, it was important to me that the hotel was clean and fresh and in a good location. Preferably with a fridge in the room.
I remember staying in St Julian's when I was in Malta in 1994. I remember that the hotel was big, on the seafront, close to everything and always very crowded at breakfast.

Got a 1-week residual trip in the 70s and then stayed in a very simple apartment hotel there. Nothing I would do again today. But at least I got to visit Malta and would love to do it again! Your pictures and reports bring back memories.

Ama de casa says:
Oh! Just love that view from the first hotel! There you can really sit and enjoy (if you have time, that is 😉 ).
I am a bit banned from booking hotels, usually find the most expensive ones 😉 Anders finds great hotels at good prices, and with good location. The location is important, but the most important thing is that there is free wiffi that works well! The latter is a bit of a gamble sometimes... But A is good and always checks in the comments what is said about wiffi. But sometimes things have changed ...
Sure, it's nice if the hotel room is a little more luxurious (like when we were upgraded to the bauta apartment in NY 🙂 ). But it should be affordable too. Probably lives mostly in simpler hotels.
I can't say anything about Malta, as I haven't been there. Yet in any case 🙂

Haven't stayed in a hotel since we got a motorhome.
Right now, however, we are eating hotel breakfast which is the best thing about hotels, we live outside.

Inga, glad you like our travel reports! 🙂
FantasyDining, that list always tends to get longer and longer... 😉.
Steve, we often think good location is one of the most important aspects!
Ninnie, Malta is beautiful and a destination we can definitely recommend! 🙂
The motorhome Helge, you change your mind over the years about how you want to live! 😉
Ama de casa, haha, yes we had time to sit and enjoy a little while anyway 😉 If I were you, I would calmly hand over the booking to Anders, it seems to go well. (Although it is nice with luxury sometimes;))
Lennart, great combo - living in a motorhome and eating hotel breakfast! 🙂
Anette, yes I have understood that it is a chain. This was the first time we stayed there and of course we were happy! 🙂

I want to stay in the centre if it's in a city and right by the beach if it's a sun and beach trip. The hotel should be fresh, have wifi and breakfast. It doesn't have to be luxurious, but I would rather choose a little better than a little worse. I had enough of bad accommodation when I travelled by train and we drove around Europe...

Britt-Marie says:
We are currently on the Costa Brava and have spent three nights in Barcelona. Important when booking a hotel in a city is central location and breakfast. Now we ended up in an apartment converted into a small hotel, with a kitchen where the fridge was filled and you had to fix your own breakfast. All fresh and nice, at a fraction of the fancy hotel cost. (Then it can be another trip!)

Ditte says:
I have stayed at the Meridien in Asia and it has always been good. But I think the difference in price also differs somewhat between Europe and Asia.
If I pay myself, I am not prepared to pay as much as possible to stay and look at the view, even if I like luxury hotels. I don't spend long periods of time there.
I like to choose smaller "boutique" hotels or hotels that are more personalised.
Nice to read your review. But just to stay, I do not normally want to pay more than 1000 sek / room / night incl. breakfast. Also have no problem with going out for breakfast.
Clean and tidy, nice staff, good wifi, good beds and preferably nice views, I am satisfied. And a good location of course. (Depending on where I am, good location can vary.)

BP says:
We almost never stay in hotels, but prefer apartments for the simple reason that we do not want to pass times for breakfast;-) In addition, we want a refrigerator and the opportunity to cook breakfast as I said.
The location is probably the highest priority - walking distance to the "essentials" so to speak.
The view from your first hotel was amazing. Can't remember the name of the hotel when we were in Malta, but it was in Sliema.

Matts Torebring says:
Both look great, but our Kabe Imperial 910 QB, when we get it, beats them both. So we'll just live in it instead. But it's good that there are alternative accommodations. Not everyone can live in a motorhome, there are not enough parking spaces.

Goatfish says:
That's an interesting point about choosing a hotel.
If you go for stars, it is not always relevant.
Of course, I want value for money. Not often have I been dissatisfied. Then it's about how much time is spent in the hotel. Freshness comes first.

Anonymous, glad you like our pictures and reports!
Liniztravel, it looks like you are having a great time in Mallis!
Znogge, you seem to be reasoning much like us. And of course you change a bit over the years...
Britt-Marie, that solution didn't sound stupid at all! 🙂
Ditte, interesting to hear your reasoning. Of course, it is always a balance between price and luxury. However, I myself have a little difficulty with breakfast "in town" because I am sooo hungry in the morning (and have a hard time waiting;))

Lena & Jan says:
I like to book B & B in the Nordic countries, most recently at Sonjas B& B in Holstebro, Jutland, DK. Otherwise, the hotel choice is what is simple and affordable with proximity to our activities! USA, always in the price range where there is a reception i.e. NEVER at a Motel. Most of the time nowadays we live in our own five-star on wheels 😉 😉 😉.

We have done the same thing several times. Both simple and fancy on the same trip. I like the mix ? But now we have small children, so we choose comfort over everything ?

Mia's Mix says:
Both beautiful in their own way. Good to know on the day you arrive in Malta. We never prioritise accommodation. The main thing is the location. And breakfast! We spend so little time in the hotels because we go on experience holidays almost all the time. But as in Hungary last year, we stayed in luxury hotels and it was really nice!!!
21 October 2016 - 15:35
admin says:
Lena & Jan, 5-star on wheels is never wrong! 😉 Proximity to what you want to see and do we also think is important!
Sara, it can be a bit different how you choose and prioritise at different stages of life!
Mia's Mix, if you plan to spend more time at the hotel, the hotel plays more importance of course! Then it's not so bad with a pool and stuff 🙂 ðŸ™'

Marina says:
For my part, I would definitely choose number two, I am of the opinion that I "just sleep" at the hotel and would rather spend the money on something else. The location is probably what decides in most cases.

Thank you for a wonderful blog and all that you share ?
Hotels are among the best there are, I myself have stayed at Hilton Malta 2 times, best of all is their large pool area facing the sea and the proximity to many cosy restaurants! Hotel Cavaleri is a nice hotel with a quiet location but still close to everything. Have a good time!
