We have had a quiet weekend in the houseboat. We have run our training programme on the lower deck, watched TV and had a coffee with some friends. But mostly we have been sitting at the computers and working on different projects around the blog. It feels a bit like this is the calm before the storm. Already on Thursday it is time for new trips ...
Cleaning up the blog
We've been blogging pretty much every day since 2009, and that means there are a lot of old posts on this blog. My basic idea is to keep most of it, but I have realised that you still need to "clean up" a bit sometimes. Some pictures and texts have ended up wrong after we changed the theme, lots of links go to pages that no longer exist, and maybe there might be the occasional embarrassing thing, who knows ...?
Going through old posts means a lot of work, but it's also fun to be reminded of things we've done in the past! If you also have a blog - do you ever clean up what you've posted in the past?
The calm before the storm
If this weekend was quiet, the next few weekends will be the opposite. For three weekends in a row, we will be travelling to Christmas markets (and other activities) in different cities in Europe. Already on Thursday, we will be travelling to Praguewhich we are really looking forward to!
Since we want you to "follow along" on these trips, we have decided to pause "Guest of the Week" for a few weeks. As usual, Peter will write on Fridays under the heading "Happy Friday", but in order not to be completely fragmented, he will share his experiences from his travels, instead of writing about his life. Of course, he will come back with the end of the story later. How does that sound? And ... how was your weekend?
Deciree says:
Yes, I will probably clean or add other things or just more pictures on the blog. 🙂

Husis blog says:
Looking forward to as full and interesting travel reports as usual. How wonderful that you got a "rest up your weekend" before all the travelling starts.

Goatfish says:
What fun to read about your travel reports later! 😀
Wow, cleaning the blog? No, I don't, what a job 😉 Enough to clean the photos 😀 Half of my blog from 2006 disappeared when Expressen closed down. I could save the text, but the pictures were not there. But everything in Blogger from 2011 exists.
My weekend has been packed with fun - parties, church and cinema - a blissful mix!

Sara says:
Well, I'm cleaning too. I have not removed so much but have re-categorised etc. It's great fun to go through all the old stuff 🙂 ).

Deciree, interesting to hear that others are also clearing and fixing! I haven't done that much before....
Husisblogg, I'm glad you want to "join in" and read our travel reports!
Geddfish, oh it sounds like you "got caught" fixing a lot of the blog anyway! Not fun when the pictures disappear... Understand that you are not looking for more work after that! I take a little at a time ... 😉 😉
Sara, yes I have probably also changed the categories at some point actually. Hard to know when you start blogging what will be good later...!

Solan says:
I love the pictures from the houseboat with the Kungsholmen skyline in the background... Have fun at the Christmas markets. We're going to France this week, so no German Christmases for us this year!

Marie says:
Oh, you can clean up my blog if you want to. ? I think about it sometimes, but the basic idea with my blog is to have it as a kind of diary for myself, so there will be no cleaning. Have fun on your travels!

Lennart says:
You have a lot to look forward to!

I am bad at cleaning the blog. It does happen, but too rarely.
I'm glad you were able to be home and get some work done. Usually feels good when life is under pressure.
It will be fun to join the journeys!

Imelda says:
Lovely time you have ahead of you. I haven't cleaned up the blog but maybe I should. However, I would need to write more.
All weekend we have rolled south, right now we are south of Lion. It's really windy so it's a bit scary at the moment.

admin says:
Solan, glad you like the pictures! 🙂 France sounds lovely, wish you a nice continued journey! And by the way ... don't they have any Christmases in France?
Marie, I understand your thought! I also save most things, because it becomes a kind of diary. But iblsnd I have written a post that is just about recommending a site - which no longer exists - and such posts feel quite boring 😉 .
Lennart, yes indeed!

åsa in åsele says:
Oooh big noo 😉 please Peter do NOT pause your life story on Fridays,
I would like to read more episodes during the week, waiting for the exciting resolution when you come to the present 🙂 🙂

Mr Steve says:
My blog works more like a diary, so most of what I've written gets to stay. Therefore, there has not been any more thoughtful clearing of the blog, but it has happened that I sometimes "fell over" something that I removed.
What fun it will be to "hang out" at Christmas markets.

åsa in åsele says:
My blog that I wrote between Aug 2012 - Dec 2014 was deleted for some strange reason, I had to prove that I was over 12 or maybe 15 years old 😉 but the blog portal refused my proof...
It was sad because a lot of pictures were only available in the blog after a computer crash a year or so earlier.
After this I have not "cleaned" my blog 🙂 .
Christmas markets sound fun,
I look forward to pictures and interesting blog posts 🙂 .

I have chosen to delete some pictures but otherwise I have not cleaned up. Would take too long I realise!

Sometimes I get that kind of jolt when I'm cleaning up the blog, trying to put things in order and correct some old stuff that is no longer relevant. Then it takes too long again even though I tell myself to be more careful all the time with labels, pages, etc. I can say the same about my home. Sometimes I get that kind of jolt.....
21 November 2016 - 8:50
Ama de casa says:
No, I don't clean up the blog. It's a diary for myself, so I want to keep it.
However, "I" am working on the "save the metroblog" project. It went into the grave and will disappear for a rescue operation in December. So far "I" (hmm...) have only managed to save the text and images. However, it requires thoughtful programming to get the links to the images right and rename some images that would otherwise be duplicates... So I'm doing an inverted cleanup, you might say 😀.
Smart of you to rest up for the hectic - but super fun! - time to come. 🙂
I think your approach to blogging in the future is great. When there is a lot going on, it is important to prioritise. It should be fun to blog - and not feel stressful!

Marina says:
The "clean up and redo" thing is something I've thought about, but it hasn't gone further than a thought. The posts from Singapore I do not want to do anything about, they are my way of remembering what I have done during these years. Then there's probably a lot that's not so good as well, but I'll leave it there. the question is what I will do the day we move back home "for real" ...
21 November 2016 - 9:16
Elin is travelling says:
That sounds good to me!
Christmas market in Prague, how lovely that sounds.
I clean/fix/change the blog from time to time, but my blog is quite new so there is not much to clean yet 🙂 .
I am so impressed that you write every day, really! I personally find it difficult to write four times a week as I usually do.

We are keeping up.

Ditte says:
Of course it is interesting to clean up but at the same time it is fun to save posts. I have not directly cleared but since I will change platform (I am not quite ready yet ....), it will be very difficult to move old posts, but I will see what can be done. This is being worked on now before the change and has been done for a long time. However, everything old is still at Blogg.se.
(Blogg.se is broken and this applies to everyone who blogs there. You basically have to move manually and it is a huge job because I started blogging in China in 2007 and then only blogg.se worked from there without a tunnel. )
Exciting now with your weekend trips and a lot to see and do.
And Prague is a city we have returned to. Should be a nice trip.
I'm also going on a working holiday, but within the country's borders.

Towe says:
Clean up yes - you should do that more often both in the blog and in the wardrobe.

BP says:
What absolutely fantastic pictures! What a view you have - WOW I just say:-)
The calm before the storm - thought you were referring to today's wind, but luckily you mean something really fun - the Christmas markets! Once again, I am happy to free ride there;-)
I have never cleaned the blog since the start in February 2008. Saw that the pictures in the earliest posts have "repositioned" themselves, but I don't mind. They are still memories - for me. But I don't think my readers will go back to my eight-year-old posts.
Reprioritising your "standing themes" is the right thing to do. Blogging should be fun and not a must.

Emma, sun like sun? says:
I haven't been writing for very long, about 2.5 years, so deleting is not something I've even considered. However, I may have re-labelled some, I have edited when I got more information because a large part of my blog - believe it or not - is actually intended as a knowledge bank with both facts and thoughts for those who are considering moving to Spain.
The funny thing is when you meet people who say they have read before they moved and that it has helped them!

Anette says:
Taking part in Christmas markets around Europe sounds fantastic to me.
There won't be much decorating or celebrating here this year. It doesn't really matter to me because we plan to celebrate Christmas in Sweden.

Hi! Found you even though I "accidentally" threw away the comment, because as you thought, it had ended up there. Do not understand why really, but have heard someone else had problems with commenting inside me must take and check this. 🙂 What a nice evening picture. My weekend has been a night job, so this morning at 7 am my weekend began 😉.

Rantamor on the retina says:
No, I have never cleaned my blog.
I used to blog every day or every evening, like a diary. Nowadays I blog a little more sparingly, don't really know why.
But Instagram came into my life and it's so easy to post a photo and write something.
Writing is a bit of my life of course, and maybe now that we have finished the camper van for the year and have finished travelling (the money is gone hahahaha) then maybe blogging will come by itself again.
So much fun you have ahead of you with all the Christmas markets, I'll be sure to follow along.
Tjingelingen from Rantamor.

Annika says:
I have never deleted any post I have written. No, they will remain, all of them. However, I can understand that many people want to clean up the posts.
Oh so lovely to go to Christmas markets en masse in the future. I would love that.
Nice to see pictures from Hornsberg in this post 🙂 .

I don't usually clean the blog, it's like a diary! 🙂
Cleaned the garden today, needed better there 🙂 .
Take care...

Christine - 29°. says:
Sometimes I go back and "clean" a bit. Rarely remove anything, but since we often travel to places we have been to before, I sometimes notice that some restaurants or other things have closed down and then I add it to the text. And when there are visa changes regarding countries we visit, I usually put forward links in those posts, to more recent posts about changes being made, so I do not fool anyone. But of course everything like that takes time, oh yes. 🙂
Enjoy the upcoming Christmas markets! 🙂

I have to settle for watching from afar when you go to your "big" Christmas markets. For us, work takes up all our free time between now and Christmas.

Maggan says:
I have cleared the blog at some point a long time ago. I think it is good to be able to go back and look for old posts about places we have visited, etc. it becomes a bit like a diary for us as well. Sometimes we can have a discussion about whether we have been to a place or not and then it is good to be able to look back. Also fun to go back and read what you wrote 7 years ago and how you have changed the blog since then. There will be no Christmas markets for us, but we would love to read about your visits there.

Åsa in Åsele, oh how nice that you want to hear the continuation 🙂 Peter will of course return, but we feel that it can be a bit too tight, to write both about it and the travels at the same time ... And how terrible that your blog was deleted!!!! What a nightmare 🙁
Steve, our blog is partly a diary as well, and for that reason a lot of it is left in, even if it probably doesn't add much to others ...
Znogge, yes it takes time ... My cleaning is also quite rough, for that very reason ...
Anita, yes you had a real "cleaning pressure" a while ago! 🙂
Ama de casa, what a mission you have ahead of you! Hope you get the opportunity to save what you want! And of course, blogging should be fun. Even if we have certain ambitions with the blog, it feels super important that it is fun! I can happily put in a lot of time ... as long as it actually feels fun!
Marina, you can always think about moving and changing direction... As for the diary aspect, I agree. I think it's great to be able to go back and check things, for my own sake.
Elin, thank you! People blog differently and what is "just right" can be different. We have now adapted to writing every day. Of course, it can be a lot sometimes, but at the same time I think I lower the ambition a little (in a liberating way) when it's every day actually 😉.
Ditte, changing platforms seems a bit complicated. Hope it goes well! Where do you switch?
Towe, haha, yes, that was the wardrobe thing too 😉.
BP, glad you like the pictures! Most of the old posts in our blog probably don't go back to people either. But some still get a lot of hits via Google 😉.
Anette, we're terrible at decorating ourselves, but we'll probably get a lot of Christmas spirit anyway 😉.
Nett, there's probably nothing wrong with your blog. This happens to me from time to time (and some others who blog from their own domain), so the only tip I have is to check the spam sometimes 😉 .
Rantamor, it sounds like you've kept up with the times! Blogging has gone from shorter status updates to longer and more elaborate blog posts (while the short status updates have moved to Facebook and Instagram).
Annika, Hornsberg is nice now in the evenings when it is lit up!
The sun, food and bubbly doesn't sound too bad 😉.
Rolle and Carina, we who don't have a garden will have to clean the blog instead 😉.
Christine, yes that's the problem, when old information is suddenly inaccurate... I don't know how to find everything, but I'm thinking of seeing if there's a plugin that finds broken links 😉.
Matts, yes I have understood that you have a lot to do! We do not have a lot of time left, but now we have at least decided to prioritise this 🙂.
Maggan, we also often go back to check where we have been and what the places were called. The blog is fantastic for that! I don't delete such posts either... But sometimes I have written posts with tips on websites and videos and such - which no longer exist. And that's what I try to delete ...
