Christmas market in Prague is an experience. From late November until Christmas, Prague is transformed into one big Christmas market. Every self-respecting small square seems to set up its own market with stalls and lights, and you don't have to walk far from one to the other. So, what do you find at a Christmas market in Prague?
Several Christmas markets in a beautiful setting
The two biggest, and most famous, Christmas markets in Prague are at Prague Castle and in the Old Town, but as mentioned, there are also plenty of smaller markets in between and around these.
The best thing about the Christmas markets in Prague is that they are set in a stunningly beautiful environment, surrounded by church towers, Art Noveau buildings and lots of history. A visit to the Christmas markets in Prague can be combined with visits to various castles, churches and towers... and with beer and Czech food of course!
Christmas decorations, crafts and delicacies
When you go to the Christmas market in Prague, you'll find lots of stalls, including local crafts, Christmas decorations and various delicacies. You'll find Christmas tree ornaments, straw angels, candles, glassware, and products made from leather and wool. You will also find cheeses, sausages, jams, honey, local wine, chocolate and decorated gingerbread.
Food and drink at the Christmas market in Prague
If you're thirsty or hungry, there's plenty to choose from. The hot drink that is served everywhere is called punch (not to be confused with Swedish punch) and we have told you about it in a previous post on Christmas markets in the Czech Republic.
If you're hungry, you rarely have to turn around more than a quarter of a mile before you find someone grilling large and hearty Czech sausages. You can also be sure to find the local pastry "trdelník". Also on sale are things like roast pig, potato salad, grilled cheese, langos, boiled corn on the cob, fried potato wedges, chestnuts and much, much more.

Yes, Christmas markets are fun! Prague is nice in itself so it is certainly super cosy now at Christmas time.

Markets are always nice!

Berit 'desires' says:
Looks really cosy, like Prague, but never visited in advent time. Currently in Palma - also very nice city! But here no Christmas markets, and the Christmas lights are mounted but will not be switched on until next weekend due to savings?

Imelda, Christmas markets are at their best when they are surrounded by a beautiful city, I think 🙂.
Lennart, right?
Palma, how sad to have to cut back on lighting. But on the other hand, maybe it is more important in this part of Europe where we have darkness... 😉.
Anita, it's cosy! Are there Christmas markets in Greece?

Ama de casa says:
Oh! Those lovely Christmas baubles... I still regret not buying one (or a bunch!) when we were in Prague. Although we were there in August (I think it was), they were hanging in many windows. Soooo hungry! But Anders said they would break on the way home. Maybe he was right, but I still regret it. If you do not test, you will not know... 😉.
How nice it must be there in Prague now! 🙂

I like Prague very much and in my opinion a city to return to. I've been here a few times, but I wouldn't particularly go here for a Christmas market, but if I were here I would certainly take a turn.
Christmas markets are not my favourite thing to do, but Prague is one of them.
There is so much to experience in this beautiful old town and it is not far from anything. Cosy restaurants, bars, streets, buildings and a city of great historical interest.
I understand that you had a great time.

Sounds like you had a nice time 🙂 I liked Prague very much and can imagine that it will also be very cosy in combination with the Christmas market!

BP says:
This market is very reminiscent of the big Christmas markets in Munich and Vienna, not least in terms of food. Think of the pig - pork and sausages of course. Actually really good - like once a year or so;-)
"Trdelník" reminds me of pastries in Poland.
Absolutely love the rusty tools in chocolate. I've never seen that. Wondering what is behind these creations. Creative and delicious!
Then one last question: Why can't Stockholm have a "real" Christmas market????
28 November 2016 - 12:45
Birgitta in Umeå says:
We were there a few days before Easter.
Then, too, the squares were decorated with rice with feather wings and there were barbecues everywhere. So Prague is also nice at Easter.
I don't think any town/village in Crete is known for its Christmas markets. It is now the 6th year we spend 5-6 weeks in December-January in Chania and Paleochora and have not seen any of this. But the school classes in Paleochora organise a market in the "People's House" one day in Paleochora and then there is the Santa race in Chania, when thousands of Santas run a distance. The fee goes to charity.

Those "rusty tools" made out of chocolate were really cool 🙂 .
We went to Berlin to celebrate New Year x number of years ago, felt that Berlin was like a German version of Stockholm, what about Prague, is there a lot of "European influence" or is Prague still more "Russian" than "European"?
You seem to be having the best time 🙂

Imagine what you miss when you have it around the corner. You kind of get blind to touristy things where you are. I'm not normally interested in Christmas markets either ... The last one I went to was in the old town half a lifetime ago. But that Christmas tree was very nice... I'll take the boys there!

Prague is a really nice city that leaves you wanting more. We were there in early November and missed the Christmas markets but there was so much else to see.

Ama de casa, haha, if you have Christmas baubles in August, then you are well dedicated to Christmas, I must say! 😉
Ditte, I know you're not very fond of Christmas markets. I probably don't shop much at Christmas markets, but I like the atmosphere and the lights and the fact that people are out on the streets, even though it's cold 🙂 When I go to a Christmas market abroad, I probably want the city to have something to offer in addition to the market though!
Emma, glad you like our photos! 🙂
Geddfish, I'm also a sucker for anything edible and drinkable 😉.
Lina, Prague is a nice city and with a Christmas market there is also a nice atmosphere!
BP, I have not visited the Christmas markets in Vienna and Munich. Interesting about the Christmas markets in Stockholm. We started talking about it but it feels like it's been a long time since I visited any of them .... There is one in Old Town and one at Skansen? But what are they like? Not so big or?
Birgitta in Umeå, interesting to hear that they decorate at Easter too! That sounds nice! Greece's traditions sound different, but maybe that's nice too?
Lena, Prague is really a nice city! We will show more pictures tomorrow!
Åsa in Åsele, Christmas flowers...? I have never heard that word 😉 Prague feels mainly quite Western European, I would say. But you can feel a bit of the East. You can see the occasional sign in Russian and women can be a little more dressed up (fur and high heels) for example.
Husisblogg, I'm not sure, but there are a lot of tourists in Prague, so I would probably try to avoid the biggest peak season anyway. But maybe early spring?
Stare Ström, yes nice atmosphere in the city this time of year!
Denandraresan, that's how it really is! We become just as blind to things in Stockholm ... I would probably not go to a city just for the Christmas market, but it will be a nice atmosphere and if you can combine with other things in the city, it will be a good combo 🙂.
Matts, very nice! Possibly a bit too many tourists at the most famous sights, but otherwise Prague is a super nice city!
Znogge, there are many other things to see in Prague too! We will return with some more things that we did, which have nothing to do with the Christmas market, tomorrow 😉.

Rico says:
Christmas markets are not my strong suit, but it certainly looks nice.
So yes, it must be given a chance before making a judgement.
I do like food and drink, though, so that alone makes me want to go there and taste it...
28 November 2016 - 22:42
BP says:
Answer: Skip the Christmas markets in Stockholm. You will just cry after everything you have experienced in the Czech Republic. Besides, you won't have time for your tight schedule either. I promise you haven't missed anything - at home that is.

Marina says:
Sitting here trying to imagine Prague at Christmas and realising that it must be beautiful and cosy! It did not become less attractive after your post. There will probably be a Christmas market there sometime in the future. It's so cosy to browse through all the Advent and Christmas posts and try to get some Christmas spirit because there is not much of that if I look out the window ...

Henny says:
Great to learn more about Prague, apparently worth a visit any time of year. It's on my wish list already.

Rico, we're probably not the kind of people who shop a lot at Christmas markets either. But I can think that it is nice with life and movement outdoors even though it is winter and cold. And food and drink is probably what attracts us the most too 😉.
BP, you have a point there! We probably don't have time ... and then it's good to know we're not missing anything 😉.
Marina, I can understand that it is more difficult to get the Christmas spirit in the sun and heat. But as I said, there is plenty of Christmas spirit in the blog world now... 😉.
Henny, Prague is really worth a visit, a fantastic city! If there is a single minus, it's that there are a lot of tourists in the most popular places, but that's part of it ... 😉.
