Eating in Zagreb? This is best done in the hustle and bustle of the Tkalciceva promenade in the city centre. Discover everything from coffee shops to vegetarian food in Croatia's capital. Croatians love coffee, and the pedestrianised streets are charming with many restaurants and bars. Here are our top tips on where to stay and eat in Zagreb!
We have now visited the capital of Croatia twice. The first time we were pleasantly surprised by an unexpectedly charming and cosy capital. This time we had our first memories confirmed. This is is an incredibly charming and cosy city.
Central hotel and modern campsite
Live in the centre can be done at Hotel Dubrovnik. This 4-star hotel feels fresh and modern and is right in the centre of the action. Our room was excellent and the beds were comfortable. When it's time for dinner, you're close to lots of good restaurants, which is good because you should avoid the hotel restaurant (read more below).
By camper van you can take advantage of Camp Zagreb, which we have written about before. A really modern and nice campsite a little bit out of town.
Eating in Zagreb - two good restaurants and one warning
Really good food you can get in a restaurant Agava, which we visited on our last visit to Zagreb. That time we had swordfish carpaccio for starters and a perfectly cooked tuna for the main course. The restaurant is located on the cosy Tkalčić street, so you can sit and watch the crowd while you eat.
Traditional Croatian food you can try a restaurant Vinodol. Here we tried Zagreb-štrukli (an oven-baked speciality of dough and cream cheese) for starters and veal cooked under peka (a kind of slow cooker made in a pot by a fire) for the main course. Delicious and very filling! Also good service, but a small minus because we had to do without WiFi.
Very boring barbecue you can avoid it by avoiding the American Steak House and Grill, which has a common entrance to the Hotel Dubrovnik. We had a few dry slices of bread without oil before dinner, a watery soup with small pieces of pork for starters, and a tired, battered piece of chicken with grilled vegetables for the main course (since we managed to replace the fries). No spices, no sauce, and no love. No love at all. We'll spare you the pictures.

Lucky you who get to go there again, it's so nice. The water fascinated me the most. It was so clear that you could see to the bottom without problems:) Have it still nice. Hugs to you

Now I have read about both Prague and Croatia. What great trips you have made!
Last summer I was in Prague (my second visit there), and it is really a cosy and beautiful city. Seems to be a city you can go to all year round, what cosy and nice Christmas markets! And Croatia I really want to visit, I have never been there. I was especially curious about Opatija!
And finally a big CONGRATULATIONS on your win!!!

The food is many times more expensive and not worth the price of the hotels. Good to get tips on local restaurants with affordable food and good service. The veal looks really good???

Lennart, a long cooking time tends to make meat tender and tasty 🙂.
Deciree, agree, the water in Croatia is incredibly clear!
Diana's dreams, it's not hard to like Croatia 🙂 ).
Ninnie, thank you so much!!! Yes, both the Czech Republic and Croatia are countries that have a lot to offer! And Opatija is a bit special, worth a little detour 😉.
Marina, we think so! 🙂
Biggeros, you are absolutely right. It is often the case that hotel restaurants are not the best ... definitely worth looking for something better!

Very tasty to find in your footsteps. The American Steak House should have a fairly short life span as hardly any guests return. But, why spoil a good hotel with a bad restaurant?

Now you have been on several nice trips, cosy!
Lovely, reasonably sized hotel room 😀 and the food looked delicious 😀.
However, I read that you got boring dry food at a restaurant, you should have sent it out by return mail, bam.
Have a good time and so do I. At home 😀

Sounds like you really have to balance between the restaurants in Zagreb to find the goodies. A bit like tasting and then it's great to get tips from both of you.

First of all - the first picture is absolutely superb!
Nothing wrong with the content of the post either. Always good to get tips on where to stay/eat and what to avoid. Hotel restaurants are generally not great, I think.
I had a good laugh too - the food portion you show is gigantic! And as often in the former eastern states, you get lots of potatoes with it;-)

Ditte says:
Totally agree with BP and others; the first image is so good. Lots of emotion and atmosphere.
Nice with tips on "good" restaurants and also accommodation. But a lot of food is served.
Good that you also write about restaurants that are less good and often this is the case with hotel restaurants. They don't have to make an effort.

Steve, I don't understand how bad restaurants survive, but some seem to survive anyway...? Especially those located in places where you only come once anyway ...
Nils-Åke, it will be more fun then! 🙂
Geddfish, yes, you should have sent that particular food by return mail ... Fortunately, many other things were so positive and good! 🙂
Rantamor on the retina, perhaps it is so in most cities, that there are both good and bad restaurants, and you often need some tips to find the right one. Glad you found us on Insta! And of course I will look in and read your blog!
BP, thank you! I'm glad you like my picture! And I know, the portion was huge. Keep in mind that we started with a starter of pasta and cheese too!!! I didn't eat the whole main course, and then the waiter looked a bit disappointed, as if there was something wrong with the food. It was absolutely not! Just a large portion... 😉
Ditte, glad you like the picture! Of course, you may be right that hotel restaurants don't have to make an effort. You should probably go a little further ... 😉 ...
