A while ago, blogger Towe, with the travel blog Come fly with meto 8 questions about travelling. She had been inspired by SvD, which every Sunday asks these questions to well-known company profiles under the heading "Business Traveller". Now we were also keen to answer! Do you have your own blog? Feel free to join in and answer too! If you don't have a blog, feel free to write your answers in the comments section.
Table of contents
1. Where do you travel most often?
We usually do NOT travel back to the exact same places, but prefer to experience new places. Two countries that we like and have returned to several times are Poland and Croatia. Poland because it's close, cheap and because you'll find both nice cities and beautiful sandy beaches. Croatia because it has an incredibly beautiful coastline with crystal clear waters, charming medieval villages and stunning national parks.
2. plane or train?
Can we answer caravan...? Otherwise, we answer train! Trains are a pleasant way to travel. It is rhythmically soothing and you have the opportunity to see and experience the landscape you are travelling through. The most amazing train journey we have made is the one that Transmongolian railwaywhich took us from Moscow to Beijing on a seven-day train journey.
3. What is your favourite airport?
We probably don't like airports very much at all. You are often tired, there are many people and everything is expensive ... Kuala Lumpur airport is modern and also bright and green, which is nice.
4. What is your favourite hotel?
Since we rarely return to the same destination, we rarely return to the same hotel ... Some hotels we like are hotels Polonia Palace in Warsaw and Le Meridien In Stockholm we don't usually stay in hotels, but we like the environment in Malta. Scandic Haymarket.
5. What do you always have in your hand luggage?
Computer, mobile phone, camera, charging cables, extra battery, headache tablets, migraine medicine... And of course passports and tickets! Sometimes we also bring a book or e-book each.
6. What do you usually read while travelling?
If we read books, it's thrillers for Peter and novels for me (Helena). But sometimes it's just the newspaper in the front seat pocket or nothing. Or blogs if there is WiFi on the plane!
7. A city that lives up to the hype?
Barcelona is a very famous and popular city, but we understand why! Barcelona is a beautiful and intense city, located right next to a lovely sandy beach. It has everything from cosy alleys, cool historical architecture and Gaudi's masterpieces such as La Sagrada Familia to a vibrant nightlife.
8. And one that disappointed you?
Milan sounds like a cool place, but we weren't that impressed. Here you can see the magnificent Il Duomo cathedral and shop in the exclusive Vittorio Emanuele mall. But honestly, we didn't find many cosy alleys to hang out in and it was hard to find any shopping bargains in the normal price range.

Agree about airports. It's more about which is the least bad than which is the best. Though fresh, plenty of space and free wifi (not a given yet) helps it all.

I would also like to see new views. I can imagine returning if enough years have passed in between. Unless it's just a sun and beach holiday, in which case the Canary Islands are unmissable.
Airports are boring and confusing. The flight itself is great fun! But train stations aren't fun either, haha. And like travelling by train.
I was thinking about hand luggage. Completely different things in it now, all the technology. By the way, I sat yesterday and assembled and screwed the base station to the TV link, but then I want help.
Good morning, now the church is calling 😀.

Great list! Like you, I rarely go to the same place when travelling. Let's see if I make my own list.
Have a good Sunday!

Marina says:
Nice to read what everyone thinks. Otherwise, these are quite difficult questions, I think, it depends so much on what you think about places you have been. However, I must (although I may be part of the case 😉 ) say that the absolute best airport I have been to is the one we have in Singapore. If I can choose one where I can imagine waiting, it absolutely wins. If I also get to choose one of the big airports that I don't like, Bangkok probably "wins" that competition....

Ama de casa says:
Nice list! 🙂
I'm probably mostly travelling home. Haha! The trip out is more varied and we rarely travel to the same place. Unless you say that the USA is "one place" then. Because we have often returned there, but the country is stoo big! 🙂
Then I think it's fun to revisit places we've been before. Like recently when we relived San Diego, Rio and São Paulo.
My favourite mode of transport last year is probably "boat" 😀.

4000 miles, WiFi is important at airports! When we flew home from Innsbruck, there should be WiFi at the airport, but it didn't work. Annoying!
Geddfish, yes there really is a lot of technology in hand luggage now! Ours is usually full of technical gadgets ... 😉 It's great that you like to fly! I mostly find it uncomfortable and want to arrive ... 😉 .
Lena, thank you very much! Great if you make a list!
Marina, I remember Singapore's airport being nice (had a stopover there once). I don't remember much about Bangkok airport, but I have been there once...
Ama de casa, haha, yes, you usually fly home of course! 😉 We also like to go by boat! 🙂

Going to Gran Canarias soon, it will be great 🙂.
Take care.......

Great list! And it's always good to reflect on your thoughts.
As for airports, they can be pretty boring but we don't usually have long layovers. Singapore, KL, and Beijing airports are favoured in Asia and Doha's (in Qatar) is great. Lovely lounge. Often we pay a little extra and have access to the lounge if we have a longer stop and so also in Europe. But long stops are avoided.
Favourite hotels are difficult but we usually choose smaller boutique hotels that are personal. The big chains are quite similar. I have about the same as you in the hand luggage and some clothes so I can manage if the luggage does not follow.
N.Y. lives up to the hype clearly and also Berlin I think. As for the city that disappointed me, I don't really know, but the Great Barrier Reef felt that way after we experienced so much better snorkelling and diving in Fiji with many more fish species. We also made a couple of trips out ...
If I am travelling long distances, I often choose to fly, which is convenient for long distances outside Europe, and then preferably by train within the country. A cool train journey was the one between Beijing and Lhasa in Tibet.
I don't have much interest now in collecting more countries, but there will be a few more. However, I want to have time and experience more in depth now than before. Antarctica and South Africa are on the list and Galapagos plus a few more. In Europe, I am keen on Albania where I have not yet been.

Airports are not my favourite place to spend time. I think the Transmongolian railway sounds like an interesting experience.
I travel so much in Spain to different cities. Then I spend many nights in different hotels. I prefer to spend a lot of time in Jerez when the weather is favourable. Otherwise I go back home to Sweden. Barcelona is a nice city and I would love to visit the Catalan city again. I can highly recommend the Melia Sky hotel. Thanks for an interesting post:)

As for Milan, I agree with you 200 per cent. That city was a disappointment. I/we have never liked train journeys, far too slow. I like planes and airports where you can stroll around and check out the shops. Dubai is in a completely different league there, so to speak, but in Europe I like Amsterdam best and Heathrow worst. The contents of your handbag are pretty much identical to mine, including the migraine medication.
When we were younger, we often travelled to different places. Now, some 25 years later, we find it great fun to "Walk Memory Lane" and return to the places we visited to see the changes.
Spain, Poland and Latvia are our favourite places.

Wow, nice list, but hard to decide. I'm not usually ambivalent, but now I am!

Since we usually do as the snail and have our house (caravan) with us, it is extremely rare that I stay in a hotel, my last overnight stays elsewhere have been in a hospital when we were in hospital with Elin's broken arm in May 😉.
When we go out with a caravan and have a little more than a weekend on us, we usually choose "city life" 🙂 when you live in an out-migration / depopulation reduced rural area, it feels fun to see both people and experience city life 🙂
When we have children (a 10-year-old) with us, we often visit zoos, beaches/adventure pools etc. which is appreciated by our Elin 🙂 .
In the summer we hope for a dog sitter so we can go away to be away a little longer, Kolmårdens Zoo is on the wish list as well as Gröna Lund 🙂 .

Agree about Milan, we also did not see any great charm in the city unfortunately. Except for Duomen then maybe.
Beginning to get a little scarce with post ideas now that all posts about Uganda are soon published so maybe it will be a travel list on Lanclin too 🙂 .

Rolle o Carina, wonderful with some heat in Gran Canaria! Wishing you a nice trip!!!
Ditte, we have had access to the lounge on a few occasions, and agree that it is terribly comfortable! I remember you telling me about the barrier reef before, sorry it was like that! And of course there are many places that you want to visit. But it's pretty nice that you have things to look forward to or at least dream about 🙂 .
Biggeros, thanks for the interesting tips! We have not visited Jerez.
BP, interesting that you have the same experience regarding Milan! Amsterdam airport I agree is good. So you also have migraines then...? Ugh, I wouldn't wish that on anyone else, so to speak ...
Veiken, the questions were not easy to answer, I agree! 😉
Åsa in Åsele, interesting that you prefer cities because you live in a rural area. But maybe that's how it is - that you want a little break from what you usually see! When we had children/teenagers with us, we also visited some zoos and such. Now that we are travelling alone, there is less of that ... (Although I like animals, so a well-run and good zoo I could probably imagine visiting anyway.)
Linnea, it seems that there are several of us who don't think Milan lives up to expectations. Fun if you hang on the list! 🙂

JoY says:
Since we got a camper van, travelling by plane has decreased significantly. If there is a flight, it is me who goes to the friends in Turkey, then there is no computer but a small pillow, bikini, shorts / linen and toothbrush in the hand luggage.
Airports: remember we thought Abu Dahbi was with a lot of gold and blingbling, and Kuala Lumpur was big.
Train journey, the last one was a number of years ago between Calcutta-Varanasi-Dehli. An experience in many ways, I can promise you.
Hotel: we so rarely stay at it because we have the Annex with us. When we were in NY running the NY Marathon, we stayed at the New Yorker, right in the middle of the action.
Cities: We like Venice and are happy to return there, as well as Paris. Otherwise, returning to places is not something we choose. But sometimes you end up there anyway.
Hugs Yvonné

Interesting to read your answers 😀 I also like train journeys more than flights, and I don't like airports much, haha. However, good (and many) seating options, free wifi and charging options make the time at the airports I visit much better.

We travelled mostly by car. Have crossed the US several times, both southern and northern routes plus the centre. Autumn trips to New England to see the wonderful host colours - I flew to Seattle, rented a car and drove down the coast to the San Francisco Peninsula in May. Wonderful!
My husband and I used to travel with a British company, SAGA, on an interesting tour: London-Yalta-Uzbekistan-Moscow-Leningrad-London. The following year, the year before the Berlin Wall fell, we took the SAGA bus tour: flight from London, then Bucharest-Sofia-Budapest-Prague-Belgrade-Krakow-East-Berlin-London.
We travelled because we were curious about 'different'.
Singapore's airport is fantastic. So is the 'tram journey'
from the city centre. The worst I've been to is Newark, New Jersey, where
you used to be able to switch to SAS. - Unfortunately, I have to say that the Washington
Dulles, which is 15 minutes away, is not a great place to be. You would
think, that the international airport of the capital of the United States, should
be something special.

Fun list, and I love travelling to the sun:).
I fly when I go abroad and in Sweden I take the train.
I like to travel from Norrköping, which is big enough and close to me.
Växjö was the worst airport with such unpleasant staff who made fun at the expense of old people!
Pallas in Falkenberg is a hotel that I like to return to, among other things.
My mobile phone, passport and money, camera, lypsyl, my medicine and a good book that I read on the plane are in my hand luggage.
Marrakesh was an exciting city to experience and for the sun it will be the Canary Islands just the right trip:). Paris was for me a disappointment very was closed and inhospitable.

Åsa, that's right! Quite possibly we lent our camera to an Asa there in Lisbon! 🙂
JoY, train journey in India really sounds like an experience!!! We have also thought Venice was worth returning to, but now we have been there three times so that's enough 😉.
Renate, free wifi at airports is super important! If it doesn't exist, I get very annoyed 😉.
Travel Friday, every city has something to offer, and so does Milan. But no, not a favourite ..,
Ruth in Virginia, wow how much you have seen and experienced! Of course you want to see "different" when travelling, that's kind of the point I think!
Gun, unpleasant staff and bad behaviour can ruin a lot! Marrakesh was exciting in a way, I agree. Paris I have seen very little of, and I have heard both positive and negative ..,
Discovering the planet, glad you're joining us! 🙂
