We flagged yesterday for positive news, for our private part. We got guesses about both a new job and children on the way, but no, there will be no more children here ... What has happened, however, feels very important and fun for us!
From a previous job ...
Yes, you who guessed a new job were absolutely right! I (Helena) have worked in public health in Stockholm County Council and at Karolinska Institutet (KI) for more than ten years, but when we did our "1 year around Europe with a camper van" trip, I lost my permanent position. Since we came home in December 2015, I have had various temporary jobs, mostly at KI.
Right now I'm working on a government assignment and I'm going through the all research to find out what the scientific evidence says about how to improve the eating and physical activity habits of the population. From health promotion in schools to economic instruments and national policies.
You can calmly say that I'm busy and now that the deadline is approaching, I'm also working at home on weekends... But, that mission ends for me on 31 January, so what will I do then?
... to a new job
Well, on the first of February I will take up the position of strategist in the area of disability at the County Council's administration in Stockholm. It is initially a one-year project to implement the Stockholm County Council's new policy for participation for people with disabilities.
I have a PhD in disability (and a PhD in public health), so this feels very right for me. It will be exciting to take on something completely new, and fantastic to work on such an important issue.
In addition: the job is very likely to become permanent after the first year, it is within walking distance of our houseboat in Pampas marina and it is significantly better paid than working at KI. Can it get any better? Wehooo!

Congratulations, congratulations Helena. So glad that it has worked out with a job, a secure backbone in the family economy and also so close and so right for your part. Hugs to you

Congratulations on your new job! Sounds exciting and feels very important.
How do you feel about combining a regular full-time job with investing in the blog? I often think it's tough. Partly because of holidays, but perhaps above all because of being away in the middle of the financial year. At the same time, you need your salary to be able to live your lavish travel blog life. ?

Congratulations on your new job! Sounds just right. I myself am planning for a little early retirement in two years but it is a moment 22. Now we have money but not time and then when the time is there, the money is missing (but it feels like a rather small I-country problem).

Matts Torebring says:
Congratulations Helena. What fun for you! I think most of us need a permanent job to feel good. For our part, at our work, we had an incredible number of staff interviews last year. In previous years maybe only one. Almost all of the departures were natural, but they all came at once in 2016.
What we have learnt over many years is... When we interview someone who has the right skills for the job and all the other pieces of the puzzle fit. Then we choose the person who is within walking distance of the job. That person will stay for a long time. When we choose people with longer travelling distances, things don't always turn out so well. Good luck!

Many, many THANKS for all the lovely and thoughtful congratulations!
Henny, thank you! Yes, you do need a secure basic economy.
Lena, yes, fun and important questions! What I'm working on now is also interesting. Here, the problem has mostly been that it is only short-term temporary employment ...
4000 miles, yes it is a challenge to combine blog and work ...! Now Peter works full time with the blog, so I can leave all marketing, contacts with companies, invoicing and even more and more writing to him. So in that way it works great. The challenge, of course, is that you can only travel when you have a holiday, we will use all holidays and holidays for travel if you say so 😉.
Britt-Marie, isn't that almost always the case? Those who have plenty of money often have little time for travelling, because they work so much. Those who have time ... they can't afford it. But of course, it's a luxury problem to be able to think about travelling at all... I hope your early retirement will be nice and that you will still be able to travel a bit!
Geddfish, we do believe in 2017, it sounds great! 🙂
Matts Torebring, I believe that you need meaningful and motivating employment in combination with sufficient finances. Exciting with many new jobs, although it may be a bit overwhelming that there are so many at once. Travelling distance is far from the most important thing, but it certainly plays a role!

Congratulations 🙂 so much fun.
An interesting job in your field and good pay,
also within walking distance, sounds great 🙂
So the potential job in Gävle didn't materialise,
perhaps even better as the distance is too long for daily commuting.
Good luck to you.

Åsa in Åsele, both jobs were interesting, in slightly different ways. This definitely has geographical advantages among other things! 😉
Gun, right? It will probably be a half-hour walk in each direction, but it will be perfect everyday exercise 🙂 .
BP, haha, I'll probably have to kindly adapt to the holidays, but it's simply a matter of using them as efficiently as possible 😉.
Seija, I hope I can contribute something good! It feels like a responsibility too.
Agneta, I have even bought new walking shoes today, it will be good everyday exercise 🙂 .
Elisabeth, I hope that I will be the "right person" and that I can "fill the shoes"! 🙂

Several days since I checked in with you. I have so much baby in my head so therefore blogging has been a bit low.
CONGRATULATIONS on your new job! Talk about an important job. I myself belong to the disabled and can testify that efforts are needed here. There is a lot of talk about investing in different categories of disabled people, but very little is done. Here you have something to bite on Helena. Good luck with your new job!

Many THANKS again for all the nice comments and congratulations!!!
Cross and Cross, yes walking distance makes it easier. I think it will be good with a little walk every day too 🙂 .
Johnny, that's a challenge ... We simply have to fill holidays and public holidays with travel. And then Peter takes care of trade fairs and press conferences and things that are on weekdays ....
Anne-Marie, oh one minute sounds fantastic! I will probably have less than 30 minutes door to door perhaps, but I think it will be good to walk a bit 😉 .
Steve, how wonderful to have "baby in your head"! Congratulations to all of you! Yes, there is a lot to bite into, and it feels like a big responsibility too.

Annette says:
Congratulations, what fun! And nice perhaps, with a slightly more secure existence financially. Very funny to read that you seem to choose to live your life fully as it suits you, and do not end up in what many scientists and even artists easily end up in (certainly many others as well), feeling that you have to take all the offers and hold on tightly to your position so as not to lose it. That you left even though you risked losing your employment was very brave! And also rightly thought, I think, life is shorter than you think. Good luck with your new job and new journey!
Ps. Your government mission sounds really interesting, I would love to read it when it is finalised. Do you have a working title I can look out for?

THANK YOU again!!!!
Annette, thanks for a nice comment! Yes, of course it was a small risk we took when we travelled, but you only live once 😉 I try to think about having security in knowing that you have the ability to get a job, rather than having to keep one. But after a long time with short-term employment, it will be good for the economy with a secure employment for a while 😉 Here is a brief description of the government assignment: http://www.regeringen.se/regeringsuppdrag/2016/05/uppdrag-att-ta-fram-underlag-till-insatser-for-att-framja-halsa-relaterad-till-matvanor-och-fysisk-aktivitet/
I will submit my part now at the end of January, but then the authorities will continue to work on it, so the final result will probably only be presented in April/May.
Johanna in Skåne, it will be perfect with the walk to and from work 🙂 We try to train at home in the evenings, but for some reason things often get in the way ... Hope all is well with you!!!!
