We are, as you may know, on a ski trip and yesterday we went to the major lift systems here in Alpbachtal in Austria. After yesterday's soft launch we ventured straight up to the top and even Beata, who had never skied before, joined us. The view up there was of course fantastic! And how did it go? We offer a post with many pictures from our trip from the top and down to the valley.
Table of contents
Great views from the top
We took a cable car up to the top and Beata, who had only had one day to practise on the family hill, said "there's no turning back now". No, you have to get down somehow! But we started by enjoying the fantastic view. Although it was a bit cloudy, it is a dizzying and completely magical feeling to be on an alpine peak, 2000 metres above sea level.
Slow journey downwards
Alpbachtal in Austria has a large ski area with lots of different pistes and lifts. The slopes are blue, red or black and there are also specific slopes for those who want to snowboard or 'play' with moguls and special courses.
We made sure to choose blue and red runs and took it slow, mainly for Beata's sake. But honestly, it was quite nice to just glide down at a leisurely pace and enjoy the view. We also made a stop at one of the many bars/restaurants on the slopes to rest our legs and enjoy a beer.
Skiing in Alpbachtal in Austria
It is clear that we are a bit rusty when it comes to skiing, but it works. Even Beata managed to get down, even though she had to make long turns and take many breaks (and sometimes fall over).
I made my worst fall in the lift queue on the first day, and then once yesterday when I was about to start and accidentally hit my own pole. Peter has also made a few falls, and I actually managed to capture one of them in a photo... To summarise: a really lovely day in the middle of the mountains. skiing in Alpbachtal in Austria!
Restaurants on the slopes
When your legs get tired (and I promise you they will!), you can stop at one of the many restaurants on the slopes. Here you can warm up with some gluhwein, or why not a beer and a Tyrolean soup with dumplings?
Reith im Alpbachtal
We live in a cosy little ski resort called Reith im Alpbachtal. Here you can stroll among cosy Austrian wooden houses, while looking up at the mighty Alps. Here you can also sample local delicacies such as cheese, marmalade, 'fruit syrup' and brandy.
Accommodation in Alpbachtal in Austria
There are plenty of different hotels to choose from. We stay at a nice and cosy hotel called Pirchner Hof in Reith im Alpbachtal. This hotel feels a bit like a relaxed mountain lodge, while at the same time being luxurious with a spa, pool and fantastic meals.

Since I'm a ski fanatic (though it's been a couple of years since I've been to the Alps), I watch and enjoy and can't wait for steep slopes and full speed.
I think you have fought very well and you have definitely had fun.

Lena, it can be very nice in the Swedish mountains too. Hope you get away!
Eva, I get it! It is wonderful 🙂
Ditte, I can understand that, and I know you've travelled a lot! Occasionally we can enjoy full speed in the red runs, but we skip the black ones 😉.
Kate, it's been eight years for us, far too long! But we take it again now! 😉

I realise that I have some catching up to do with you, so now I'm going to browse a bit backwards. Have a continued wonderful stay among the alpine peaks!!!

Catherine says:
But how good you seem to have it! Can almost hear the sizzle. I also want a helmet like that with
Ears. ::)

Mr Steve says:
It looks really nice. A few bumps are part of the package when skiing in the Alps. Keep enjoying your stay.

Goatfish says:

Anette says:
That's great! Must say I admire my friend Beata, a brave woman.
I also fell in the lift at the beginning of the day but you have to take that with a grain of salt.
It is so cool when you go down and get some speed on the skis. 🙂
Stay safe on your journey.

JoY says:
You look like you are having a great time on the slopes. Cosy to sit out on the slopes with a pilsner. It sucks in the "ski gut" now hihihi Falling is part of it, for me too, but Jakob is not allowed to do it after operating both hips.
Turn further

Ama de casa says:
Those pit stops are great for skiing. Softens up the knees somehow... 😉 .
Haha! Nicely captured when Peter performs a "trick" of some kind there 😉.
Tough of Beata! But with such short skis... Won't it be more difficult with the balance then?
08 January 2017 - 12:24
BP says:
Good job there! Have never ridden trick skis, they seem to be a bit short;-)
Red slopes are definitely my favourite. Just the right steepness, just the right speed and you always come down. Of course, the occasional fall is included!
Still no glühwein I see;-)

admin says:
Gunnel, these are great views to photograph! 🙂
Marina, thank you! We will take the opportunity to enjoy 🙂 .
Katarina, right? You are super hungry for a helmet with ears! : But Peter doesn't want to listen to that ear, so to speak 😉.
Steve, yes a few bumps do belong! 😉
Geddfish, you should have fun when you can!
Anette, I agree! Beata has really been tough and challenged herself! She was worried, but did it anyway. And today it goes really well downhill! 🙂
JoY, just when the sun is shining, it is fantastically nice! Understand that it can be sensitive to skiing when you have operated on your hips ...
Ama de casa, haha, yes it was an impressive "trick" 😉 Yes, maybe a little more difficult with the balance. But it is very quick to learn to swing.
BP, haha, no gluwein actually. But on the other hand Jägermeister! 🙂

08 January 2017 - 16:42
admin says:

Mr Lars Permelin says:
Lovely pictures, it looks fresh and healthy with skiing in that environment. After checking out our grandchildren's skis, I realise that my boots are from a bygone era, far too long and far too narrow.

Anki says:
Great pictures ... it looks like a lot of fun!

Annalena, well, isn't it? Peter had no understanding at all for my wish, haha 😉 .
