Playing games while travelling, do you even have time for that? Well, maybe that's when you do! A colleague recently returned from a wonderful holiday in the Caribbean with the whole family. I asked how they had been and was told that "We finally had time to socialise with the whole family. We brought lots of games with us!". When we used to have Peter's sons with us on our travels, we also used to play games - and in fact Peter and I played a few ourselves when we travelled around Europe in the camper van.
TV and computer games
In this day and age, it is perhaps TV and computer games that attract at least the younger generation the most. When we used to take Peter's son Billie and some of his friends on motorhome trips, we used to attach a screen behind the driver's seat when we were driving. We plugged the Playstation into an inverter and they could play all the way!
When we arrived, we instead attached a large TV screen to the outside of the camper, so the guys didn't have to sit indoors all day ... We also played a lot together on Playstation, and then it used to be quiz games like BUZZ or Trivial Pursuit. Really fun! So much fun that Peter and I also played some ourselves during our 2015 trip around Europe ...
What about old-fashioned games?
We probably haven't been as good at playing old-fashioned parlour games, but sometimes it has happened. We've played cards, of course, and in the picture you can see Peter and his eldest son Robin in the middle of a game of Vagabond's travelling game. The picture was taken during a campervan trip to Poland in 2012, and Peter and Robin played in teams against me and Alexandra. Who won? Me and Alexandra of course!
Online and mobile gambling
Now many people play on the internet too. On Facebook I always get requests to play in "Candy Crush Saga", but I don't even understand what it is, haha.
The biggest hit of 2015 was, of course, Pokémon Go. This game became so popular that "Pokémon Go" actually won the league as the most Googled keyword for the whole year! What will be most popular in 2017 remains to be seen, but I read something about "Super Mario run" being the new hot thing.
Do you play games while travelling? What do you play and who do you play with?
Lennart says:
In the unlikely event that there is any time left, we play Boule!
But games are a great way to pass the time.

Throwing pigs is the closest thing to a game we have in the campervan?

Goatfish says:
As a parent of young children, there were many games IRL on the table, we had a lot of fun.
I had a son who played online, Super Mario and other games.
Myself these days? No, nothing while travelling. But I play WordFeud on the disc against one or two, when I'm at home. Building words is fun. And just right.
My "game" on the trip is "knitting raggies", haha 😀 - all the best ?

Ditte says:
We have played some quizzes (but not by phone or on the computer) and some card games.
Grandchild Max likes to play Pokémon and he did the same with me in Spain. fun to look for the Spanish variants.
Personally, I like to play the quiz game "Quizzkampen" on my mobile phone, both at home and when I am abroad and connected.
While travelling, I like to read books if I'm flying and otherwise listen to downloaded books or old "summer programmes" I haven't had time to listen to.

Mr Steve says:
Parlour games have never been my thing. Not so strange perhaps as I do not have my own children. Today, through my grandchildren, I have realised that the range of games is enormous.
However, I also spend some time gambling, but it's betting on horses, V75.

We have been a "game-playing" family, both before we had children and during. We always had games with us when we travelled. We have always bought a new game every Christmas so there has been a considerable collection of this product and we still have "game nights" with friends and with our girls when they are at home. Christmas is traditionally a big gaming holiday and yes, it's great fun!!! When I think of gaming, I think of board games and socialising. In my world, Pokemon Go is not included in that category, although I know it has made many people socialise. But it's that kind of socialising that our generation (at least me) hasn't really embraced yet. I have the game on my own phone and I've caught a lot of "pokemonar" so there! It's a bit of an occupational hazard with me, I have to try out what the kids I have in school might be doing, it's much easier to have an opinion when you know what you're talking about. (Then I think it's a little cowardly to capture those slightly cute characters too 😉 ).

We can play boules and Yahtzee.

Ama de casa says:
I love playing board games! (When I win, that is 😉 ) One of my favourites is the "Schlagerspelet" that the then non-thinking friends in the ski and boat group gave me when I turned fifty. Now it always follows the ski and boat trips and the others do not like schlager at all. Haha! What were they thinking there? Not at all... 😉
I am easily addicted to gambling (but never for money). Got stuck in the tetris swamp back in the day, and a few years ago I was helplessly stuck in Wordfeud. Eventually WF was uninstalled on all devices (at my own request) and since then I've been playing games on the computer. Spend enough time in front of the computer anyway 🙂.
But those stone age games that exist in physical form - I love them! I don't always find someone who wants to play, just... 😉.

Veiken says:
Well it's bad with games while travelling, but I'm a bit stuck in the Pokémon swamp. Books and WF keep me company on my travels! 😉

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
In our campervan trip there is often a tournament during the trips (with a detailed score report) in Yatzi and five-card poker. Quite nice to end the day with a glass of red and a few rounds.
I was almost addicted to Word Freud and Candy Cash Saga, so when I bought a new phone I didn't reinstall them, and I'm perfectly fine without them!

Lena in Wales says:
I never play games on the computer, sometimes other board games.
Read below about your tapas evening, nice. Have actually been to the bar in Haymarket at Hötorget, but only for a glass of wine. Like the place.
Take care!

WF has been standing since a few years, otherwise it can be a game of Carcassonne sometimes.

Anette Åhnbrink says:
Yes, there have been many games in the car and then the motorhome! We have even dragged an extra TV so that everyone can get what they want! Thinking about a sports holiday over fifteen years ago, we knew that the cottage was "old-fashioned" so we did not dare to take the chance of not having a TV with us? You should have seen him pushing all the stuff up on the snowmobile (we're talking real mountain cabin!), when we put on the TV too...in the motorhome it was so much easier, and the youngest had two cabinets with films and games with him! We on the other hand are completely uninterested, but bring out a decent TP, then we can talk?! Congratulations on the great interview in Husbil&Husvagn that we got today!

Anette says:
When travelling with the children, we always played games, often cards.
TV and computer games could be played at home but not when travelling?
I love questioning.

I am definitely not a gambler, avoiding all such things if I have the opportunity 😉.
have sometimes played some computer games, but I'm not like that 😉.
While Elin was smaller, it was those children's games, memory, fia and other dice games, now she is 10 and it is only games on mobile, computer and TV that apply 🙂

Emma, sun like sun? says:
I love games! And I mean REAL games, like card and board games. Got hooked on Candy Crush on the computer though but have abandoned it in favour of AlphaBetty.
But the most fun is still board games. I played a lot of Pictionary when it came out. Monopoly, of course, I've played that since I was a kid. But we have a problem in the family and that is that we like different kinds of games. My husband likes strategy games like Monopoly and Risk. Since I always lose, I like it less. I like more word and knowledge games like Scrabble, Rappakalja, Trivial Pursuit etc. But also Cluedo and Pictionary. We have also played The Lost Diamond and Ghost Hunters, good children's games.
But now we have found a new game: Star Wars Cluedo. The problem is that it is only available in Spanish here, not in Swedish or English in Sweden, so we have to order from the USA.

I can safely say that I/we never play games. We have no children either, so that's how it is. In addition, I am totally bad at games, both old-fashioned board and computer games. As for Pokémon Go, I managed to download the app after much trial and error, but until today I have not even started the game as I do not know how to do it. Hopeless in other words;-)

Lennart, nice to have such a climate so you can be outside and play 🙂 .
Imelda, throwing pigs, haha, I've never played that! 😉
Geddfish, I like words too, so all word games are fun! 🙂
Ditte, I'm glad you reminded me of Quizzkampen! I haven't played it for years, but I had a period when I was completely hooked!!! Fun game!
Steve, I have never bet on horses, but I have seen a race at Täby Galopp once 🙂 .
Marina, how cosy it sounds when you talk about your game nights! Yes, board games and games on mobile phones and computers are different things ... often anyway. When we have played Trivial Pursuit on Playstation, it has felt like a traditional board game in many ways! I have not tried Pokemon Go, but if nothing else it seems to get the kids (and the adult maybe ;)) to move a little! 🙂
Nils-Åke, we probably played Yatzi a few times when the boys were younger, but long ago now. Nice to play games sometimes! 🙂
Ama de casa, I can probably also get "stuck" in playing if I get into something. Often I don't have time to start, but maybe that's good, haha. Just right is best 🙂
Veiken, I also like to read when we are travelling! When we're at home working, I don't have time, but I miss it.
Britt-Marie, games are actually the most fun if you take it a little "seriously" and are careful with the points, haha, then you go for it more! 😉
Lena in Wales, glad you were at the Haymarket. Nice atmosphere there!
Criss-cross, my brother's family has Carcassonne I think. I have never tried it, but we have been to Carcassonne in France 🙂 .
Anette Åhnbrink, haha, I can imagine how you loaded all the technology on the scooter! 😉 Glad you got the magazine with the report! We didn't even know it was out ... haven't seen it ourselves yet ... 😉.
Anette, I also like quizzes 🙂 .
Åsa in Åsele, yes, the children grow up with completely different things today ...
Ruth in Virgina, only!? Haha, no doubts there 😉
Emma sun as sun, oh a real gamer! 🙂 I remember that I played Pictionary and that it was fun, but now I don't really remember how it went ... Candy Crush and stuff like that I could probably get stuck in, so just as well not to start, haha 😉 .
Juhani, great to hear that the tickets arrived! I hope your back doesn't get in the way and that you can go!
BP, haha, it sounds a bit hopeless... But I think you have other interests, so I don't think you're in any trouble! 😉
Rolle and Carina, hope you get the dream prize!!! 🙂
