We have had a very nice weekend at the Kista fair. We got the chance to meet so many happy people and several of you via the blog in real life, wow. Today it will be souvenir here on the blog. eBeach.se is a large online travel agency that has listed 10 crazy souvenirs that some people take home from the trip. Follow along!
10 crazy souvenirs
1."Ten kilos of nectarines from Rhodes. The price per kilo at home was many times higher, so I took advantage because I could never afford to buy them in Sweden. When I landed at Arlanda, my entire suitcase was full of crushed nectarines and all my clothes were ruined."
2. 'In Las Palmas I bought a blue money box in the shape of a toilet seat. You put a coin on the seat, press the pedal and a lightning-fast hand transfers the coin to the interior of the chair."
3. "My dad bought a big camel from Tunisia and made him sit on his lap on the flight home. It's the craziest thing I can think of and he still has it."
4. 'In the 1970s, I bought a cordless phone in the Canary Islands. When I talked on it, the call was simultaneously heard on our kitchen radio. I threw it away pretty quickly!"
5. "I always bring sand, shells and fine stones from all the beaches I visit. My family always checks my bag before going home and makes me leave some sand behind so we don't get overweight."
6. "When I was in Thailand, I bought a nice Buddha statue for my grandmother. When she got it, it turned out that it has a detailed description of tantric sex underneath."
7. 'On my last trip to Morocco, I bought an unusual horse that can be filled with cigarettes. When you lift the tail, the horse poops out a cigarette."
8. "I won first prize at Disneyland in Paris. An alien who was 175 centimetres tall. Of course, I had to bring him home, so he had to sit next to me on the plane."
9. "At a market in Spain I found moose poo from Härjedalen. It was just too weird not to buy at home!"
10. "A wooden knob that my son bought for his dad. It's a bottle opener with a fridge magnet so it has quite a few uses."
Pull all the way into the bucket!
Anyone dare to help me complete the list? Have you bought something crazy on your trip? This is Happy Friday at its best, haha.

Mr Steve says:
Really weird souvenirs. Difficult, I dare say. In any case, I don't come close.

Wow, so many crazy things 🙂 Of course I have seen crazy things on trips but nothing has come home with me - at least nothing of the above dignity 😀.

Marina says:
I have to admit that I'm on the sidelines here. However, the best souvenir in my environment is probably when a friend of mine was in Stockholm on a school trip and bought a Dala horse home to his mum with the text "made in China" on the bottom...

Lennart says:
Great post!
24 February 2017 - 7:37
Johnny Friskilä says:
I'll probably have to make a separate post with souvenirs I've bought while travelling. My Tajik carpet with Lenin's portrait is probably one of the craziest things I bought, I think... Or maybe not?

Goatfish says:
No, nothing strange, I think. The worst is probably a fan, one of those Spanish leather wine bottles that you have to pour a jet of wine into your mouth, I can't remember what it's called. And when do you use it? I have actually collected stones, the ones from Egypt were valuable 😀.
Happy Friday 😀

Avis, OR HOW, we agree with you Peter ??
It was a fun list. I was on a flight home from Greece when liquid started to flow from the luggage compartment in front of my seat. The man, who got it on himself, stood up and pulled out his bag, which contained a large jar of pickled olives. Not much liquid left in it at all!
I always pick a few shells and rocks? It's good to have a motorhome that can hold a lot.
When we had a bike rack at the back of the motorhome with a cover over it. Our friends had sneaked a huge pine cone onto the bike's carrier. It came home from Italy. Which I was happy about, as Jakob thought we already had so much stone and shells and didn't need pine cones too?
Have a nice weekend
Hugs to you

Hasse says:
Not in your league perhaps, but my youngest son brought me a pipe from Malaysia. Haven't realised why, but it's there on the shelf.

Fantasy Dining says:
Ha ha what fun! Probably because a lot of things have come home in the suitcase but I can't help there 😉 .

Biggeros says:
That's quite a list of funny souvenirs. I have a lot of memories from different countries that have been purchased. I remember buying a nice flask of Ouzo in Greece. I was 9-10 years old and went and sipped the strong liquorice drink until it simply ran out. Then I added water just to make up for it =)) No one noticed anything. Then I still have a key ring from Greece with a dear couple in a strange position......Typical Greek=))Hihi.
Shells and stones have also been my passion. Have a nice weekend!!!

Peter Bergström says:
Haha, we needed this after all the info from the fair. I think Johnny Friskilä is in the best position today with his Tajik carpet with Lenin on it and Hasse is close behind with a pipe that he does not understand and still has, haha. Thank you for writing and filling in. I love it. Many weekend hugs.

Ama de casa says:
Haha! Even I heard it there OR HOW 😉 .
I bought my brother a huge toy taxi just at the beginning of my train journey in 1979. It didn't fit in my backpack (far from it!) and I had a hell of a time lugging it around for five weeks. As my brother was 22 years old at the time, one can really wonder why? 😉
My father caught a great fish in the West Indies when we were there in the 60s. It was beautifully shimmering blue, but as soon as it came up it lost its colour. Dad had it stuffed (!), which took time, so it was transported home long afterwards. Then they had spray-painted it in some garish turquoise colour. It was soooo ugly, but dad was soooo proud! Mum hated it 😀 (I dare not even think about what it might have cost? 😉 ).
My aunt was in Hong Kong and wanted to bring home a souvenir. "Okay," said my uncle, "but it has to be something small.
Auntie carefully selected a small, beautiful lighter and was pleased with her choice.
Until she came home and saw that the EXACT same lighter was available at Holmlunds Livs in Byske 😀.

Snows says:
I am very sensible and only buy a mug and a fridge magnet. However, my daughter bought a camel puff in Tunisia. Unfortunately, it smelled so bad that it ended up on a shelf in the storeroom where it remains twelve years later...
Happy Friday!

The travel dream says:
I have bought canned air when I was in Iceland. I thought it was such a stupid thing that I couldn't resist buying a can. But I don't know what to do with the "shit".

Or how jealous...I bet they are also very jealous. So much fun we had and so many good laughs. We have a wonderful life we motorhome drivers and that we also get to meet so many nice people..like you for example. We are so happy about what we get to experience. No special things can come home with us... other than shells and stones as usual. In fact, it came with some larger cones from Italy last autumn :) Hugs to you both

BP says:
That Friday laugh is perfect for the sunny weather:-)
My craziest souvenir purchase must be 6 ceramic tea/wine cups that I brought home from Bulgaria. One should favour the local population, I thought. It just so happened that all 6 leaked and could not be used...

Ditte says:
Not like these "tall tales". And they get better with age...Thanks for a good laugh.
From Beijing we had friends who got on the plane with four jackets on, very hot and outside it was +25.
The daughters have also, when they were small, 5-6 years old, brought coconuts, sand, stones and shells in their luggage, which became too heavy and some had to be removed before check-in and then the backs were filled.
As for me, I can bring home some food and preferably orchids from Thailand.
I'm glad the fair was so successful.

Hahaha, it just gets better and better! What wonderful stories and what a great Happy Friday with the blue sky and the day is not over yet. Thank you all for sharing your quirky souvenirs. Hugs to you all.

Matts Torebring says:
Judging by the mandarin purchase, you could be classed as an economic "Smålänning". But that's not true either. It was an expensive memory. I do not come up in your experiences in any way.

Answer: Forgot to post the kidney warmer. Coming on Sunday... if I don't forget;-)

anita wåg agrimanaki says:
Wonderful! I'm trying to figure out if I've bought any strange souvenirs, but I don't think I ever have. I was a collector when I was a kid and got national dolls from all my friends who were travelling. Had dolls from all over the world. Unfortunately, my dog ate most of them. From my own travels, there were then the classic collectibles such as stones, napkins and matchboxes from bars and for a while there were elephants. The last time I was in Sweden, my daughter and I were frantically looking for Swedish souvenirs when we were in Stockholm. It was funny that not one of the shops had a Swedish shopkeeper. One of the shops even played Greek music at full volume. We bought fridge magnets with trolls and Dala horses from the Egyptian.

Camilla says:
I don't buy souvenirs anymore, but more than once I have been surprised by what I have brought home. Things that do not feel as nice or interesting at home as in the place where they were purchased...

Peter Bergström says:
What fun with all that you have filled in and what a great Friday it was. Matts Torebring: You must have had your mind elsewhere because it's not me who has done all this nonsense. Thanks for your comments and have a really cosy weekend.
