Today is Valentine's Day and with that, we received a press release about ten romantic camping spots. The company SHAREaCAMPER, which rents out private motorhomes in New Zealand, Australia and Germany, shares its best tips. And one of them is actually in Sweden! As a bonus, we also offer the most romantic place where we have camped ourselves ...
Table of contents
1. Lake Öljaren, Sweden
Between Katrineholm and Eskilstuna is an area of great natural beauty and history. Visitors can also take a trip to Julita Gård, with its historic buildings and endless parks.
2. Croix-Rousse marketplace in Lyon, France
The marketplace in Lyon offers free camping for the first night. Here you'll find artisans, theatre and music and the same feel as Montmartre in Paris, but smaller.
3. Gieethorn on Lake Molengat, Netherlands
This idyllic town in the province of Overijssel is surrounded by endless lakes and forests. There are thatched farms on peat islands, linked by over 170 wooden bridges.
4. Ramsau at Berchtesgaden, Germany
Ramsau is a small village in the Alps, offering a wonderful mountain climate and views of the blue glaciers. Here you can also take a trip to St Sebastian's Church, a world-famous motif in paintings.
5. Lake Windermere, United Kingdom
The Lake District in the north-west of the UK offers a picturesque landscape of lakes and small green mountains. It is a perfect area for relaxing and walking with great views.
6. Telheiro Beach, Portugal
Telheiro Beach, or Praia do Telheiro, is a breathtakingly beautiful beach northwest of Sagres with great surfing opportunities. Beyond the beach you can camp for free, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
7th Seal Rocks, Australia
Campers can park near the beach and enjoy the view of the stars in the night sky. Plus, the waves here are perfect for surfing. This small town is located in New South Wales, 27 miles northwest of Sydney.
8. Mount Cook, New Zealand
Mount Cook is a glacier on the South Island. During the day, couples can hike along the countless trails and enjoy stunning views of Lake Pukaki. In the evening, you can watch the sun set behind the glacier and then stargaze.
9. Highway 1 and Big Sur in California, USA
Highway 1 offers the possibility to stop your campervan wherever you feel like it. The most beautiful part is surrounded on one side by mountains and on the other side by the romantic Big Sur coast.
10. Long Beach in Tofino, Canada
On the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Tofino is a cute and sleepy surf town that comes alive in the summer but has year-round charm. Here you can surf, hike, kayak or whale watch.
Bonus: Plage de Cupabia in Corsica, France
Last but not least in this post, we at FREEDOMtravel would like to name our most romantic camping spot. Plage de Cupabia is located on the south-west coast of Corsica and offers crystal clear water and beautiful sandy beaches where you can easily find small places where you can be completely alone. There is also a romantic and simple little campsite just a few metres from the beach.
Have you been to any of these places? What is your top tip for romantic camping?
Lena - good for the soul says:
Yep, have travelled along Highway 1 and the Big Sur area. Absolutely amazing! I don't know how many times I wanted to stop and take pictures. I really want to go there again. But I would probably not choose to have a larger motorhome or caravan because the view points that you could stop at were not so big and often full of cars. And at Julita Gård I have been too. So nice there, but in a completely different way 🙂

Across the board says:
Whether the place is romantic or not probably depends more on the company. Otherwise, Romantische Straße in Germany might be a good road to go on today <3

Seal Rocks! We have camped there! Amazing place where we surfed with dolphins!

A fitting day to think about romantic places you've visited. What goodies you offer. Now I'm really hungry for camping.

Ama de casa says:
Almost makes me want to go camping again, although I think that hotel camping suits me better nowadays. There are many romantic places on those as well 🙂 .
Have a lovely and cordial day!
Hugs ❤

I have been to many romantic campsites and places. The one I remember most was in the late 90s, when we travelled a lot in Germany. Neckar, Rhine, Moselle. Being able to camp next to Lorelei, felt nice 😀.
Not bad with good memories ?
I wish you a lovely day and as always Light and Love.

Would like to go to every place on the list.
Lovely and beautiful.
It has been so long since I went camping. But when I did it was Fårö, and it was absolutely wonderful.
Have a nice Valentine's Day!!!

Anette Åhnbrink says:
Lovely places ❤ highway 1 check, Germany check, but then there were many want to go to places you had on the list! Lilla Råå, outside Helsingborg is a favourite for us when we go by motorhome! Another is Verona in Italy, where we were last summer, needs to be visited again?, and in Greece - Afissos, a small community on Pelion? Now have a nice All ❤ day! /Anette

Ditte says:
Seal Rocks in Australia we have visited, as well as Mount Cook N.Z. (was there by campervan)
Big Sur and other areas along Highway No. are nice and we went there with a Volkswagen camper. But there are so many beautiful places on this earth. In Europe I fell for Corsica which I think offers many beautiful and romantic places. Giethorn in the Netherlands looked beautiful as well as the nice beach in Portugal. But I'm a bit of a fan of Lake Garda as well when it comes to romantic places....
Fun list anyway.
And much of it is in Sweden.

Matts Torebring says:
Any place can probably be romantic. Maybe it depends more on the company than the location. But those are great tips.

Lena, what fun that you have been to those places! Both Big Sur and Julita! And glad you like them! We have both of those places left...
Criss-cross, yes the company is probably most important ... 😉 But it does not hurt with a nice place too!
Åsa, how nice that you were there!!!! 🙂
Steve, well this is a day to be filled with a bit of romance 😉.
Ama de casa, you will surely find some romantic hotel-camping! 😉 Wishing you a nice day too!
Geddfish, Germany really has many idyllic places to offer, as soon as you get off the Autobahn 😉 Wishing you a nice day! And thanks for the link! What fun that Lidköping ended up so well! We have not been to so many on that top list actually, but Pite havsbad for example is nice.
Annika, Fårö also sounds both romantic and beautiful!!!
Anette, great that you've been to several of the places! I have actually been to Råå course a long time ago with a youth organisation. Remember that it was nice!
Ditte, funny (but not surprising) that you have been to several of the places! We have also been to Mt Cook by motorhome, and it was an awesome experience! Lake Garda is nice and can probably qualify as romantic, I agree! 🙂
Matts, the company is definitely important for the right feeling 😉.

What a fun and interesting post on this particular Valentine's Day. Here I was actually a bit surprised. Have not visited the campsites but have been to five of the places on the list. There you go! It was a positive surprise.
Oh your header picture is lovely and soooo appropriate today:-)

Agree with BP (as usual) on the header image. Remembers
the one from your annual trip, as I wondered who took the photo. 🙂
If I were younger and had a "Romeo", I would absolutely
travel to Corsica - absolutely!
Not a campsite but a hostel - newly engaged we cycled
Gotland around 1949. Found a wonderful sandy beach without a clue.
only human in the neighbourhood. Skinny dipping on Gotland on a sunny
July day IS romantic.
Big Sur is nice, but I don't know if it's really romantic.

BP, great that you have been to five of the places!!! Actually, we have only been to one of them (Mt Cook in New Zealand).
Rolle and Carina, sounds wonderful! And nice to have a place to dream about 🙂
Deciree, well now you start looking forward to spring and summer!
Ruth in Virginia, yes haha, sometimes self-timer and tripod are good 😉 Cycling around Gotland and bathing naked in the sun sounds romantic 🙂 ).
