Motorhome rental company SHAREaCAMPER has released a study revealing which countries have the most adventurous population. The company chose eight adventurous activities (skydiving, surfing, skiing, mountain biking, bungee jumping, climbing, hiking and caravanning) to make the ranking. Then they looked at the number of Google searches for words associated with these activities, and divided per 100,000 inhabitants...
The Dutch are the most adventurous
Top of the list is the population of the Netherlands. They are very interested in travelling by motorhome/caravan, but they are also curious about hiking and skiing. But the Swedes actually come in a very good third place!
- The Netherlands
- Australia
- Sweden
- Germany
- France
- Denmark
- Norway
- United Kingdom
- USA
- Austria
Indians are curious about hiking
It is perhaps most interesting to look at which activities are popular in which countries. If you look at the most frequently googled activity (per 100 000 inhabitants), the results are as follows.
- mountain bike is most popular with the French
- Bungy jump is most popular with the Swiss
- Motorhome/caravan is most popular among Dutch people
- Hiking is most popular among Indians
- Climbing is most popular with Australians
- Skiing is most popular among Norwegians
- Parachuting is most popular with Australians
- Surfing is most popular with Australians
In Sweden, we like to travel by motorhome/caravan.
When looking at the full table of results, you can choose to look at Sweden in particular, which we have done. In the list below, you can see how often we google different adventurous activities, compared to what people in other countries do...
- Motorhome/caravan (3rd place)
- Skiing and surfing (6th place)
- Mountain bike (13th place)
- Bungy jump (19th place)
- Parachuting (20th place)
- Climbing (22nd place)
- Hiking (23rd place)
Do you think this is true? What are your favourite adventures to go on?
åsa in åsele says:
I was actually surprised that Sweden is apparently so adventurous... well, the Swedes, because the country itself is pretty quiet 😉.
The fact that Indians were most interested in hiking was also a novelty 🙂.
The fact that Australians were most interested in surfing, parachuting and climbing didn't come as a surprise, as they are somehow more adventurous than Indians 😉.
Ha ha 😀 what prejudices I have... 😉.

Helena says:
The Indian thing surprised me too! Prejudice as I said 😉
27 April 2017 - 12:11
Across the board says:
Oops, there were some prejudices put to shame ...
27 April 2017 - 7:50
Helena says:
Yes, I felt it too 😉
27 April 2017 - 12:11
Lena & Jan says:
Yes! not surprised by the Swedes' interest, fun to be 3rd ?
27 April 2017 - 8:50
Helena says:
Nice place 🙂
27 April 2017 - 12:11
Lennart says:
Of course we like motorhomes!
27 April 2017 - 8:54
Helena says:
Yes, of course we do! 🙂
27 April 2017 - 12:11
Amanym says:
Seems like Swedes in the country of Lagom are a bit too adventurous per "branch". But all in all, it is an honourable bronze 🙂.
I like hiking (preferably on the plateau), alpine skiing (preferably après-ski) and hotel camping 😀.
27 April 2017 - 9:38
Helena says:
Yes haha, it's a bit more comfortable when it's on the flat 😉 At least not too many hills, because for some reason they always go up...!
27 April 2017 - 12:13
Ama de casa says:
Ooops! Apparently someone hacked my blog? 😉
27 April 2017 - 9:38
Helena says:
Yes, that must be the case ....! Because it can't be about attempted election fraud...!? 😉
27 April 2017 - 12:14
Ruth in Virginia says:
Can travelling by motorhome really be considered adventurous?
or caravan?
27 April 2017 - 11:53
Ama de casa says:
Yes, Ruth. It can. You can get stuck in narrow alleys - horrible thought! 😉
27 April 2017 - 12:06
Helena says:
Yes, but of course it's adventurous Ruth! 🙂 You travel without planning, end up in unexpected places, drive along steep mountain walls, get lost in forest paths, experience other cultures, meet people you would never have met otherwise, spend the night in nature (or at petrol stations haha) etc. It is clear that it is an adventure 🙂
27 April 2017 - 12:17
Lena & Jan says:
If so, having a GPS can take you to unexpected heights ? and experiences and you get to see a lot. It was more of a sport in the past when paper maps were used ?
27 April 2017 - 14:35
Marina says:
Good thing I read your answer above, because I was probably a bit on the same thing "how adventurous can it be to go motorhome", but ok then, further prejudices that came to the surface...;)
27 April 2017 - 13:07
Helena says:
It all depends on what you mean of course. I myself have a fairly broad definition of adventure 😉 For me, adventuring on a trip means going a little outside the box, being without protocol, and being open to the unexpected. But of course, skydiving is a different kind of adventure 😉.
27 April 2017 - 22:50
Anki says:
Fun reading ... and interesting how differently people choose in different countries. Of course, I go by motorhome, but if I were to embark on something more "adventurous", I could imagine a long ride on horseback - in Sweden or abroad.
27 April 2017 - 13:30
Helena says:
I also like horse riding! It has mostly been shorter rides, but a long ride would feel adventurous 🙂 .
27 April 2017 - 14:56
Renate's travels says:
Hehe, maybe it's not so strange that Norwegians are most interested in skiing. There is a saying that Norwegians are born with skis on their feet. 😉 Too bad that Norway ends up in seventh place when it comes to being most adventurous then!
27 April 2017 - 13:30
Helena says:
No, it wasn't really surprising that Norwegians rank high on skiing! 😉
27 April 2017 - 14:58
snort says:
I was actually surprised and miss some countries but at least we got an honourable third place. I could imagine testing a motorhome but it's probably not the most adventurous. Or maybe I'm completely wrong 😉 .
27 April 2017 - 14:28
Helena says:
Motorhomes can be more or less adventurous depending on how you travel, but at least it's cosy 🙂 ).
27 April 2017 - 14:58
Elisabeth says:
Clearly, the motorhome comes out on top!
27 April 2017 - 16:41
Helena says:
Right? 🙂

Matts Torebring says:
Spontaneously I just felt, this is everyday food for everyone living in Austria, they have all this at home on the kitchen table. It should be a natural part of their lives.
The Dutch exist in unlimited numbers wherever you go, they must have a great desire to do things.
A place of honour for Sweden.
27 April 2017 - 17:59
Helena says:
Yes, isn't it an honourable place for Swedes? Maybe we have a bit of Viking blood in us after all 🙂.

Mr Steve says:
'Lists' can be created in the most marvellous ways.
27 April 2017 - 18:01
Helena says:
You are very right about that ... and the blogging world likes travelling 😉.

Ditte says:
Nice list! But motorhome or caravan is not really something for us. but we have tried it and it was very nice (in USA and New Zealand).
I have jumped parachute in previous years, but now I am interested in it but can no longer jump for health reasons. I still like downhill skiing very much and preferably where it is steep. Mountain hikes and horseback riding (longer distances) are also liked, as well as sailing.
Be surprised that the Indians like hiking but not the Norwegians' skiing. And I have noticed that the Dutch are a travelling people who like to try most things.
27 April 2017 - 18:58
Helena says:
You are a real adventurer Ditte! 🙂 I was also very surprised by the Indians' interest in hiking. Maybe it's a prejudice, but I certainly wouldn't have guessed it ...
27 April 2017 - 22:58
Rantamor on the retina says:
Yes, now it is almost summer and the adventure awaits. We have put our motorhome up for sale and if there is a deal, we will buy a new slightly newer model year.
Something I miss when it comes to travel writing is travelling within Sweden.... can't you make a TV programme like that, it would be so much fun to get some travel tips within Sweden....
Tjingelingen from Rantamor.

Helena says:
It is exciting to see where the motorhome fever leads you! 🙂 Yes, Sweden yes... Why not? I agree that there are many nice places to see and experience in our own country. We'll see if we can focus a little more on that!
27 April 2017 - 22:59
Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
The most remarkable thing is, as many have noted, that Indians are curious about hiking. We ourselves probably google mostly on motorhome/caravan and hiking. This summer we are hoping for weather for a week-long hike in the far north of our country where we will of course go by motorhome. The advantage is that if the weather gods are not merciful, it is just to turn the car towards another direction....
27 April 2017 - 20:56
Helena says:
We love the motorhome trip and hike you're planning! And we can only agree, one of the absolute best things about a motorhome is that you can change your mind and change direction! 🙂
27 April 2017 - 23:01
BP says:
I have never been adventurous, but I have at least skied - only downhill, that is. Long walks and hikes I still do, but that hardly counts as adventure I guess;-)
27 April 2017 - 21:41
Helena says:
What is an adventure was an interesting dimension in today's discussion! Personally, I think adventures can be different types of experiences, big or small, but I realise that it can also be a matter of definition... 😉.
27 April 2017 - 23:02
Cattis says:
Not so surprised that we are adventurous in Sweden but perhaps thought that we would be a little higher on both mountain biking and skiing!:P For my part, I miss the adventure of diving and would have preferred to choose it...but if I have to choose one of it in the list, it will probably be hiking!:)
27 April 2017 - 22:09
Helena says:
I agree that it would have been interesting if diving had been included, not least because Peter recently started doing it! So you are diving I guess?
27 April 2017 - 23:04
Lena - good for the soul says:
Hiking, 23rd place, nope. There must be something wrong 😉

Dawan says:
Well, it may be true that Indians are interested in trekking but then it is not stated anywhere that they actually trek. Very funny post...not available in English is it? Thought to share.

Eva - People in the Street says:
As an old climber, climbing comes first. A complete activity and form of exercise for the whole family. Skiing, and then downhill skiing, is still with me today, while I have left mountain biking behind, and hiking will probably last a lifetime at some level.
I opted out of parachuting in favour of diving, I have tried caravanning but bungy jumping is out. Surfing seems difficult.
What great activities! However, horse riding and scuba diving are missing among the adventures ?
Have a nice weekend!
