Yesterday we got to try Segway in Malta, with a tour around beautiful Dingli. This was a great way to experience the surroundings and nature, we must say! In addition, we can recommend a fantastic restaurant in Dingli.
Table of contents
Dingli in Malta
Dingli (Ħad-Dingli in Maltese) is a small town in Malta with just under 4000 inhabitants. It is located near the coast, surrounded by beautiful nature and farmland.
Dingli is located in the south-west of Malta. It is just over 16 kilometres west of Valletta and takes just over half an hour to reach by car from the capital.
Dingli Cliffs and St Mary Magdalene chapel
Dingli is famous for the cliffs known as the Dingli Cliffs. These are simply the steep cliffs that plunge into the sea outside Dingli, offering a fantastic view. Here is also the chapel of St Mary Magdalene, which is a small Catholic chapel from 1646. When the chapel was built, it was on the same spot where another chapel had stood before, since the 15th century.
After admiring the view for a while, we were ready for the adventure of the day: a segway ride in Malta. And it was right here, at the chapel, that the tour started.
Segway in Malta
We did our segway tour with a company called SegwayMalta. They organise segway tours in different parts of the island, so you can just as easily book a tour in Valletta if you want to. Personally, I would always choose a smaller place with beautiful nature, like Dingli. Valletta is best experienced on foot anyway!
Also, it was more fun (and a bit more challenging) to drive on twisty and hilly gravel roads than on straight tarmac roads. But if I (Helena) can do it, anyone can do it, so to speak. I usually argue that I can't drive anything with a motor, haha.
Segway in Malta - through green nature
We have been to Malta twice before - once in summer and once in autumn. Summer is great if you're going on a swimming holiday and can handle the heat. Autumn has a pleasant and nice climate, even if it's dry. But spring - that's when it's green! In that sense, it was a new Malta we experienced yesterday. Plus lots of flowers in yellow, red, purple and blue.
Have a look at the full-screen 360 photo below, taken with Nikon KeyMission. Look around the image by moving your mouse back and forth and up and down, or by turning your phone.
Restaurant Diar il Bniet in Dingli
Wow we say! If you ever visit the village of Dingli must you have a meal at the restaurant Diar il BnietLocated at 121 Triq il- Kbira, this restaurant is owned by a family that really takes care of the food from farm to table. They grow many of the ingredients themselves and also sell some products from their own farm, such as pickled fruits and vegetables, jams and olive oils.
We started the lunch with a really good mixture of small and good picks (picture below) and then it was gratinated minced meat filled zucchini with grilled vegetables and small boiled potatoes. Really, really good! Whilst we were enjoying the food, the Prime Minister of Estonia came in for lunch, accompanied by his bodyguards. So we were in good company, we must say!

Guess I get a little homesick when I read and look at your pictures. It is right now in the spring that it is most beautiful on the island with whole seas of flowers in the meadows. I have never tried Segway, I think I am a bit like you Helena, so if you can do it, I can probably do it too 🙂 Dingli sounds like an excellent choice to get around. Undeniably a cruel lunch, god how I miss real food and the Maltese bread. Here in Borneo there is nothing at all that even resembles what is common to us in Malta.
It will be really fun to follow your further adventures! Take care of both of you and enjoy the present!

Helena says:
It's really nice here in the spring! And I agree that the food, especially the bread and olive oil, is fantastic. The first time you get on a segway, it takes a little while before you find the right way and feel how to do it. You need to do a few practice laps if you say so. But it goes away pretty quickly and then it is not difficult! Not even for someone like me 😉

Looks beautiful overall in Malta.
Wishing you a nice day 😀

Helena says:
The locally produced cheese here is really good, both goat cheese and sheep cheese. And the olives too!

Anita Wag Agrimanaki says:
Yummy, it looked good! And the mode of transport seemed fun! I've seen that you can rent these too, maybe I should try it? But, well, mountainous Crete is probably a bit too dangerous to travel with these.
07 April 2017 - 8:22
Helena says:
Haha, I guess you have to choose challenging stretches... 😉 They told me they have a tour here that is in even more terrain, but too mountainous I would definitely skip that one 😉.

You're moving in the right circles... 😉.
I have never tried a Segway, and most likely never will. My balance is not the best.
But hoverboard... I'll probably buy one of those... 😀.
Stay well in Malta!
07 April 2017 - 9:40
Helena says:
I want to see photo evidence of that when Ama goes around on one! 🙂 Weren't those considered dangerous by the way, or wasn't that the case...?

The food looked yummy and in what company you got to eat the delicacies - WOW!
We also saw a relatively green Malta when we were there. Love the island! So go ahead and enjoy!!!
PS. It was a black day for Stockholm today. Be glad you're not here at home. Read the news... or don't,,, DS.

09 April 2017 - 7:18
Åsa says:
I say no to the segway. Maybe meaningful for those who can't walk themselves but as long as you can, you don't need a segway.... right? /In a temporary bad mood
08 April 2017 - 17:34
Helena says:
Haha Åsa, you must be in a bad mood 😉 If you look at it that way, there are many things that are not needed ... 😉.
09 April 2017 - 7:19
Anette says:
I will probably try the Segway at some point. What speed do you get up to?
That lunch makes my mouth water. Longing for Mediterranean food, it doesn't taste as good over here and you can actually get a bit tired of Thai food.
09 April 2017 - 8:00
Helena says:
Yes, of course you should try the Segway! 🙂 I think they get up to about 20 km/hour.
