We have now travelled from Swinoujscie in the north of Poland to the mountains in the south of the country. So what's it like to drive on Polish roads? And what can you expect from a campsite at the foot of the high mountains in southern Poland?
Table of contents
Polish roads
The new modern Polish motorways are at least as nice as motorways in Sweden or Germany or wherever. But then there are old roads too ... the ones that are patched and repaired and where the motorhome lurches forward and it is impossible to reach the speed limit.
Some roads are charmingly twisty and turny, others plunge 11 per cent upwards and still others are cobblestones. You simply never know what's coming next.
Green and leafy
The thing that strikes us most is how green and beautiful it is to drive in this country! In no other country have we seen such intensely green and dense deciduous forest, and the greenery seems to extend all over the country. Another fascinating thing is these avenues. They don't just last a short distance somewhere - for miles and miles you drive through these well-planted rows of green trees.
Polish villages and towns
We drive through countless villages and towns. Mostly villages actually, the kind you drive into and then out of again after only a few minutes. Sometimes we pass a large city with uninspiring concrete houses in the communist spirit. Other times we go through some really cosy little town with beautiful house facades.
Camping in the mountains
Eventually we arrived at the Sudetes mountain range and camped there. Wisniowa Polana. It's really nice with a big pool and a small bar. Things to do here include taking a bus the three kilometres to the foot of the mountain range, taking a cable car part way up and then continuing by climbing.
Here, by the way, we met 29 (!) Danish motorhomes. We were curious and learned that they come from a Danish camping association. They stand here for eleven days while they have bus excursions to various sights such as production of Christmas baubles (!), cities and mountain nature. We stayed here one night, and now we have continued across the border into the Czech Republic!

Mr Steve says:
It looks really nice where you are travelling. And exciting, of course, as you don't really know what's around the next bend.
27 June 2017 - 6:21
Helena says:
Mostly pleasant routes, perhaps above all because it is so green!
27 June 2017 - 8:42
Anki says:
Excited to follow your journey!
We travelled by car through Poland and further south about ten - twelve years ago and what I remember most is the traffic, which was then terrible. Motorway-like roads with intersecting traffic and horse-drawn carriages and that overtaking was preferably done with obscured visibility, solid line, oncoming traffic and just before the crossroads 🙂 One day we saw three accidents within a couple of hours, of which we were almost dragged into one of them ...
Stay safe on your journey and drive carefully!
27 June 2017 - 7:11
Helena says:
I am not surprised by what you tell me. Some of it is still there, but it has probably become much better. We haven't seen any horse-drawn carriages ... 😉 On the other hand, some patched and repaired roads, a lot of diversions due to road construction and a lot of road users making stupid detours.
27 June 2017 - 8:44
Mr Frank Olsen says:
One thing is all the forest in Poland, another thing is the agriculture. Where we drove last year from Lithuania to the Czech Republic there were miles upon miles upon miles of huge fields of rape, sunflowers, grain, potatoes and various vegetables. I have read or heard somewhere that Poland alone could grow all the food needed in all of Europe.
Then we can wonder why we bother with agriculture in Norway? Have a nice trip.
27 June 2017 - 7:18
Helena says:
Yes, there is a lot of farming and cultivation! Fantastic that they grow so much! We need farmers 🙂
27 June 2017 - 8:48
Matts Torebring says:
The nature looks more than amazing. Getting onto cobblestone roads, however, scares me a bit. For several years we drove the former East German side. Then we travelled quite close to your itinerary. We always said that nature was so beautiful already there.
27 June 2017 - 8:14
Helena says:
Cobblestone roads are not much fun, but fortunately they have only lasted a very short time. However, there are times when they are patched and repaired, and there are roadworks and closures here and there ...
27 June 2017 - 8:49
Lena - good for the soul says:

27 June 2017 - 8:23

27 June 2017 - 8:49
Lennart says:
Lovely green!
27 June 2017 - 8:39
Mr Nils-Åke Hansson says:
Peter in the Travel Planning office! We have driven cobblestone roads East Germany for several miles something you remember. Good that it was painted on the trees.
27 June 2017 - 8:40
Helena says:
Yes, indeed, that's the office! 😉 Fortunately, the cobblestone roads here have only been short stretches. However, some patched and repaired roads sometimes, and a lot of road construction (which of course is good, but in the meantime it gets a little messy).
27 June 2017 - 8:51
åsa in åsele says:
I wonder if these avenues could have been created after the Second World War?
Poland was one of the countries that was heavily bombed... or was it? In any case, it looks green and not as grey as I imagined Poland to be 😉.
Patched and repaired, often provisionally, yes, we have plenty of such roads in Norrland 🙂.
27 June 2017 - 9:55
Helena says:
I don't know about the avenues. The trees are very big in some places, how long does it take for such trees to grow so big? And Poland is definitely more green than grey! 🙂
27 June 2017 - 11:29
Ama de casa says:
Isn't it great to be on the road again? I loved our little tour, which also offered very different types of roads and small cute villages 🙂.
Production of Christmas baubles? Ohhhh... I would have liked to see that! I still regret that I fell for Anders' talk about "it will never make it home" when I fell in love with one of those huge, beautifully decorated Christmas baubles... Admittedly in another country (Czech Republic) but still. Guess the Polish ones are at least as nice!
And you... HAHA! I thought you recommended those car atlases in book form when I showed my huge camping map of Italy? Live as you learn... Mmmhmm? 😀
Have a great trip!
27 June 2017 - 10:19
Helena says:
Haha, we actually have a regular road atlas too, which I use in the car and like much better. We got this big map of Poland from the Polish tourist office. Quite unwieldy I think 😉.

Role o Carina says:
Lovely to travel with you in the greenery! 🙂

Hello!
Somewhere where you are now there should be a mega cool place called - Bledne Skaly, Errant Rocks, Kudowa-Zdrój definitely a tip!!!
Peter with a tyskie on the table looks quite lovely. Now I'm jealous.
27 June 2017 - 12:44
Helena says:
Thanks for the tips! 🙂 Googled the place and it looks so cool! In reality, we have gone a little further than what is shown on the blog. However, we found another place with cool rock formations. Coming up on the blog tomorrow morning!
27 June 2017 - 13:09
Ditte says:
It is certainly nice to drive through a beautiful and green landscape and cozy with various stops along the way to discover new favourites. Many times the journey is a goal in itself.
27 June 2017 - 13:18
Helena says:
Yes, the road is a big part of the journey, we think, many times anyway!
27 June 2017 - 17:27
Anette Åhnbrink says:
Great to see your pictures! And Peter looks cool when he plans?, saw the rock formations on insta, will check youtube soon, have you planned to stay longer somewhere or just travel around? You have to take care of yourself too!/Anette
27 June 2017 - 15:53
Helena says:
We'll post about the rock formations on the blog tomorrow morning. Cool! And yes, this time it will probably be mostly to travel around... only have three weeks of holiday so otherwise we probably won't have time to go around and home again ... 😉 .
27 June 2017 - 17:29
BP says:
I also remember the intense greenery - so beautiful! What I remember most about the traffic is that there were often long queues on smaller roads and that there were three times in one week that it was fallen trees that lay across the roadway that caused the queues. Fortunately, you managed that.
Nice to see that Peter also still believes in old, honest paper maps;-)
27 June 2017 - 16:09
Helena says:
Queues and fallen trees have been avoided. However, a lot of road construction and closed roads. Even more so in the Czech Republic than in Poland though... 😉.
27 June 2017 - 17:30
Husis blog says:
The owners will have to change their preconceived notions, Poland looks really nice.
27 June 2017 - 18:33

All countries have pluses and minuses, but overall we think Poland is very nice! Above all, it is incredibly green everywhere!
