Time for a holiday in Swinoujscie, Poland! Swinoujscie is located on the Baltic Sea coast, close to the border with Germany. Boat traffic to the harbour town is lively and the long sandy beaches in the Polish spa town are extensive. The ferry journey left something to be desired, but now we will enjoy our holiday in Swinoujscie, Poland!

TT-Line Trelleborg - holiday in Swinoujscie, Poland
We have travelled to Poland with the shipping company Polferries several times, and cannot claim that the ferry trips are so much more than a transport. So it could only be better with TT-Line, we thought, but well, that was not really the case.
Ferries run 35 times a week between Ystad and Swinoujscie and take about 6 hours. You dock on the eastern island of Wolin and if you want to go to the centre where everything happens, you go to the western island. Usedom. It's cheap in Poland and many people do a shopping trip over a weekend and there are plenty of hotels and a lot of attractions.
The ferry left at 16:30 and we immediately checked out the restaurant selection. There turned out to be ONE restaurant and it served a rather unexciting buffet on plastic trays. Not so exciting, but we still speared ourselves on food and beer a little later. Imagine our surprise when we came down to the restaurant at 18:30 and all the food was gone! The only thing to "choose" was a pre-packed sandwich.
Being annoyed, we checked if there were any signs informing us of the opening hours, but there were none. We bought some peanuts and hung out in the cabin while grumbling that the boat's promised internet barely worked (and that there was no way to buy more surfing time because the service desk was unmanned).
Imagine our surprise (time number two!) when at 10pm it was announced that "the buffet is now open again". Now? Now we would add in an hour ... And no, now we were not hungry for any buffet anymore.
Camping Relax
We set the GPS to Camping Relax, located in Swinoujscie, but on the other side of the water that runs through the city. It took us about 40 minutes to get here from the ferry harbour (including a short ferry crossing) and we kept the almost about to hit two cute fox cubs on the road, but luckily we had time to brake and they wandered frightened in opposite directions.
Relax Camping is pretty basic, but it's green and leafy, and the location is as good as it gets. Just a short walk away is a fantastic sandy beach that's 5 metres long and up to 100 metres wide, a promenade full of restaurants and bars, fish smokehouses that are plentiful along the Polish coast, and a town centre with lots of shops.
Fantastic beach
The town of Swinoujscie pleasantly surprised us in every way. The long and wide sandy beach is filled with soft white sand and there are plenty of beach bars as well as boats and traditional beach chairs for hire.
Just above the beach there are several nice walking paths with small viewpoints where you can sit down and enjoy the view of the sea. If you get hungry, there are plenty of places to eat - not least there are plenty of small fish smokehouses. The holiday and harbour town is originally a spa town with a spa.
Lovely holiday in Swinoujscie, Poland
Swinoujscie is full of large and beautiful houses with turrets and towers. Beautiful walking paths, avenues of green trees and small fountains add to the feeling of holiday luxury. There are also streets filled with pubs and outdoor cafés. When we arrived at 12 o'clock on Midsummer night, the atmosphere was high and the streets were full of music and young people.
Personally, we have a tight schedule (not so strictly planned perhaps - but we have lots of plans for things we want to see in Poland and the Czech Republic during our three weeks). Of course, we've already rolled on ... and you'll soon find out where!

Lena - good for the soul says:
Hahaha, so sorry. That midsummer dinner! Damn, I would have been grumpy! How likely is it that the restaurant closes at 18.30?
That town/community looks really cosy.
For me, today is an excursion to Fulufjället National Park with Njupeskär, Sweden's highest waterfall.
Hug Lena

Helena says:
But why not? Everyone else (like Polish lorry drivers) seemed to know how it worked, and maybe there is a good reason ...? But in that case, can they at least inform the rest of us with a sign? Felt as strange as ever ... Have fun among the mountains and waterfalls!

Kenneth Risberg says:
Buffet at 22:00 does not seem well planned. Nice sandy beaches in Poland, also in Sopot.
What is the approximate price of camping?
25 June 2017 - 7:27
Helena says:
If we calculated correctly (not quite used to the Polish money yet), we had to pay 175 kr for one night, including electricity.
25 June 2017 - 8:30
Kenneth Risberg says:
Quite a good price.

Days by Johanna says:
A little weird with the boat, If they had closed 22 I would have understood it because now you were almost there, but have closed so long during such a trip sound hmmm weird.
Sounds like you should make a visit there anyway, but take the boat from Ystad instead 🙂.
25 June 2017 - 8:02
Helena says:
Yes, but isn't it? We didn't get it ... There are more ferry companies and routes, or you just have to prepare yourself to make it feel better 😉 Swinoujscie is definitely worth a visit!
25 June 2017 - 8:31
LinizTravel says:
But oh no
Bad and annoying 🙁 when you are hungry as well 🙁 .
Enjoy the journey !
Hugs

I get pretty grumpy when I'm hungry (Peter can attest to that, haha).

Mr Steve says:
It was an exciting start with both "high mountains" and "deep valleys". Hope that the continuation consists of only "high mountains".

This is often the case when we are travelling, high up and deep down, but we prefer it to flat out 😉.

Mr Nils-Åke Hansson says:
We have travelled on Finnlink ferries to Finland, which are truck transports. When they served food, for a labourer it was large loads.
Enjoy your journey.
25 June 2017 - 8:51
Helena says:
Yes, some of these ferries seem to be mostly for lorry drivers. But they could give the rest of us a little thought too ...
25 June 2017 - 9:43
Matts Torebring says:
All's well that ends well, I wrote myself a few days ago. I think you feel the same way. I would have been frustrated too, to say the least, by the lack of information. How do you think? Or do you not think at all?
I avoid travelling by ferry as far as possible. Perhaps I have travelled 100s of times with a tractor, motorhome and car. Over the years, I have seen plenty of incidents. I have been involved, but have been blameless. But what a shame! We wish you all the best.
25 June 2017 - 8:52
Helena says:
Ferries are not always fun, but can be handy for getting around. The meal times were strange, but it would have helped if there was information at least ....
25 June 2017 - 9:44
Ditte says:
Really a sad discovery that no food was served. If there had been information that it was only open for a while, you could have brought something really good to eat yourself. And you don't want boring food at all.
It looks nice here at the campsite and it seems to be well visited.
However, the sea looks cold.
Enjoy the rest of your journey.
25 June 2017 - 9:09
Helena says:
We did not look carefully on the Internet before, we must admit, but on board the ferry we found no information at all about the opening hours of the restaurant. Not on the restaurant doors or menus or anywhere ...
25 June 2017 - 9:46
Ama de casa says:
It was probably not the best cruise to choose, maybe... 😉 But you got where you were going at least 🙂 .
Looks super nice! But the name? So difficult! I have enough trouble remembering where we are now (Calatayud, I think) and have not yet managed to learn the name of today's destination, despite valiant attempts 😉.
Have a great Sunday!
25 June 2017 - 9:22
Helena says:
I'm very proud of the fact that I learnt to spell Swinoujscie (before any foreign accents, that's just overkill). To the south is a town that is EVEN worse. I can't spell it but it's something like Scszeszin... 😉.
25 June 2017 - 9:48
Inga Magnusson says:
Maybe simply Stettin in Polish! ;-))
26 June 2017 - 11:38
Goatfish says:
Oh, dear! I have always been one of those people who must have food in time, otherwise I get grumpy. So I usually check in advance, or have something with me (like first aid). But, you THINK that a ferry has food during the journey!
However, it was nice, when you arrived! I have never been to Poland, would like to 😀.
Have a good time and tomorrow I go to Wales via Lidköping - Arlanda - Manchester, long day of travelling!
25 June 2017 - 10:39
Helena says:
I also have to have food in time, but it didn't even occur to me that there would be no food on the ferry ... at noon ... And Waow, what fun!!!! Have a nice trip!
25 June 2017 - 11:13
Across the board says:
But such strange meal times! And no info, it was bad. Poland would be an exciting country that we have not visited. Yet. Keep up the good work
25 June 2017 - 10:47
Helena says:
Yes, but it was strange, wasn't it? And Poland is worth visiting! 🙂
25 June 2017 - 11:14
Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
We also have similar experiences from ferry crossings from Trelleborg so now we bring some picnic food and a bottle of wine and enjoy the cabin. Now your trip can only get better!
25 June 2017 - 13:01
Helena says:
Sounds like a great idea! You learn all the time 😉
25 June 2017 - 13:45
BP says:
The ferries to and from Poland are nothing to hang on the Christmas tree. They are mostly used to transport Polish "guest workers", and they don't care and often have a packed lunch (and a bottle of vodka) with them...
But luckily you were compensated by finding a great campsite in Swinoujscie. Now it is just to hope that you get some nice weather too.
25 June 2017 - 13:52
Helena says:
It was overcast in Swinoujscie, but still warm in the air. Now we have continued south and it is getting warmer and warmer 🙂.
25 June 2017 - 16:41
Ann-Louise says:
Sad with the food 🙁 but Swinoujscie looks very nice anyway!
25 June 2017 - 19:42
Helena says:
Swinoujscie is a real holiday gem! 🙂
25 June 2017 - 21:02
Annette says:
That start was not one you want, but then it got better, when you got to see the fox cubs 🙂 You are so experienced in everything about travelling, but in case you haven't thought about it, a tip is to bring protein bars on trips. They correspond to about one lunch. We usually do this to keep our energy at an even level if we can't find places to buy food or fruit. These protein bars have been a big reason why our kids stay together while travelling, no energy dips 😉.
26 June 2017 - 14:48
Elisabeth says:
We also experienced Swinoujscie as a nice town. But so are many of the coastal resorts!
01 July 2017 - 16:04
Sylvia Gustafsson says:
We always travel with Unity line from Ystad to Swinoujscie. They have much better ferries than Polferries, which we tried a few times. Unity line has good food in the restaurants and generous opening hours. Good selection in the shop too. Two years in a row we have used their discount for motorhomes and got a really good price.
