In the summer of 2014, we lifted the entire houseboat on land and did a complete renovation that included new construction of the entire upper floor, new panelling everywhere and a new balcony floor on the deck. But of course a houseboat requires maintenance! We've decided that it's best to do a little each year, and this year it was time to paint the deck and lining.
Painting the patio ...
Painting the terrace was probably most important! The wood in the terrace floor felt really dry, so to speak. We bought glaze at Bauhaus, which they mixed into a colour that might be called ash grey.
Peter has now painted both the terrace and the gangway. It turned out really nice! The colour goes well with the walls of the houseboat, which are painted in the colour "sea mist". And it feels good to know that everything will hold up better to the weather and wind.
... and paint the lining
We also wanted to take the opportunity to paint the lining and the inside of the cantilevered roof. The linings had started to look a little worn, so we wanted to take the opportunity before it got worse. Fortunately, it was the linings on the side towards the bridge that were worn. Those on the outside towards the water are not as easy to paint, so to speak ... Here it is outdoor white acrylate paint for wooden facades that applies.
Newly refurbished houseboat
So now we have a newly decorated houseboat. What remains when the painting is done is to fix some new furniture for the living room. We have also installed a water shut-off device that is very smart. Will tell you about it soon. Have you painted or decorated anything this summer?
Across the board says:
"It was a farmer who painted the fence - it was white."
No, nothing has been painted, not even the TV bench that should have been white a year ago. Now that we have neither a mountain cabin nor a villa, it's nice to avoid all the improvement work.

That's the advantage of not having a lot of houses 😉.

Haven't painted anything for years, not even a painting....
It is important to take care of exterior maintenance and protect the wood from moisture and humidity.

Yes, better a little work now than a lot of work later ... important to keep up!

Yes, painted some red paint on a barn in the countryside! The actual painting is fun, it is the preparation that is boring!

Helena says:
Agreed! It's fun when you see results 🙂

JoY says:
Nice it will be and you have to maintain the wooden parts. Working position hahaha lie on your stomach and paint I have not done
Yes, there is some painting here from time to time. Jakob has a painting ban, he paints a little too much both here and there! I have painted the entrance, a chest of drawers and the large kitchen sofa we bought. Some painting jobs remain before autumn comes.
Hugs

Helena says:
It sounds like you paint a lot! Especially when you get a painting ban, then you have not been idle ... 😉 Have a nice time!

Mr Steve says:
Whether you live in a house or a houseboat, maintenance is important. Here it is D who does the maintenance and there is always something on the annual maintenance plan to fix. This year she has, among other things, surface treated all outdoor stairs.
02 August 2017 - 9:33
Helena says:
Yes, that's right! It's nice when you surface treat things and feel that they will hold up better to the weather.

Ditte says:
How nice it turned out! And maintaining a houseboat is important. We have had "regular boats" in stages and they have been refurbished in different ways both spring and autumn. Now that time is over, but the Spanish cottage has received a little plaster during the spring. Here at home, some renovation work awaits in the autumn, but there is no hurry.

Helena says:
Well, whether you have a house or a boat, there's always something ... 😉.

Husis blog says:
How nice it was with you!
No, this year it has only been to look after the garden and bushes for the owners. But on the other hand, the laundry room and bathroom were completely renovated last year. The roof was also done, so this year the owners could probably take it easy with a clear conscience.
02 August 2017 - 14:00
Helena says:
It sounds like your owners have taken care of the maintenance work 🙂 And the garden should of course also be taken care of! But we, who live in a houseboat, can skip that part 😉.

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
Here we can soon celebrate holidays with a clear conscience. A skylight has been painted and it is not so easy to do because it has to be removed so stable weather for three days is a must. The whole of last summer was spent thinking about it????
At least the houseboat turned out really nice!

Helena says:
Being sure that the weather will be stable for three days in a row in Sweden is not easy ...! Nice that you can go on holiday with a clear conscience now! 🙂

Wonderfully nice when you get things like that done. You have often gone and looked at it for a long time before you take hold of it 😉.

Take care....

Matts Torebring says:
The advert on the TV... "A Demidecker" likes to paint, but not very often. I would think that a houseboat requires even more care than a house. Painting is fun and relaxing, if the weather is good for painting.
02 August 2017 - 21:23
Helena says:
I agree that painting can be quite enjoyable, at least if the weather is nice and you don't have too strange a working position 😉 But this time I didn't have to paint at all... 😉 .

Ama de casa says:
Good job! Have said it before, and I say it again - you live so heavenly nice! And believe it, as you work to keep it tip-top ðŸ™'
We have not painted anything this year (either). Doesn't feel necessary as the apartment is brand new. Ooops... It has been almost 14 years since we moved in, but THEN it was brand new. Not so much wear and tear either as it is only the two of us who have lived there. Of course, there are always a few little things to do. But no big stuff. It was different with the house in Sollentuna where we lived for 21 years. It was from 1938, and required a lot of maintenance most of the time. Love to now have an apartment that is just to close and leave when you want to go somewhere else once in a while 🙂.
02 August 2017 - 22:17
Helena says:
Yes, it is a nice environment here!!!? Of course there is less work with a newly produced apartment than an old house, and that has its advantages. Then you can like to do handicrafts as well. But if you do not, a new apartment is a good choice 🙂 .

BP says:
Can't help but laugh here. People who live in houses usually also use the summer to spruce up the house/villa. A typical Swedish summer activity if you don't live in an apartment, that is. To paint the houseboat - there is no difference compared to a house, which has to be maintained. Peter was also lucky with the weather. You didn't have to do the painting job:-)
02 August 2017 - 22:24
Helena says:
I can only agree! Many things about living in a houseboat are just like living in a villa. And according to the Swedish Tax Agency, we live in a "small house" so ... 😉.

Your houseboat is just too cute, like a little candy bar despite the grey, beautiful colour. 🙂

Glad you like it Marie! We love it 🙂

Christine - 29°. says:
How nice it turned out. Understand that there is a lot of maintenance required. Our summer cottage is very close to water and that alone requires extra maintenance. But of course it is wonderful when the job is done later and you can enjoy it. 🙂

Elisabeth says:
Fun when the practical management is done! But if the boat is to continue to be nice, you have to take care of it.

Thank you very much for an interesting blog that has helped me a lot!
Soon my family and I will be moving to the Pampas marina, a decision that has created a lot of emotions, joy, excitement but also a lot of anxiety. I wonder if one inspects the boat before moving there? And who could help us with this? I read your blog every night even though I have already read it before. You are real sources of inspiration and I am so glad that I have found you.
Many thanks
Alma

Glad to hear that you like our blog Alma! And what fun that you are moving to the Pampas!!! Have you bought a houseboat that is located here? I can't really answer your question about inspection. I don't think there's a definitive answer, but ... What kind of boat is it? Have you already bought it or are you about to buy it? Or are you possibly going to rent? If you want, you can write an email to us at kontakt@freedomtravel.se
