Today we are travelling to Switzerland for five days of Alpine air, nature experiences and local Swiss food. It will be very exciting, so keep an eye out for our first report tomorrow morning! So far, we don't have anything interesting to tell you about the trip, so we're doing travel news as usual on Mondays. This week, we can tell you what Swedes prefer to read in their deckchairs, that the Öresund Bridge has set a traffic record and about the world's worst airports.
Table of contents
Swedes read crime novels in the sunbed
A new survey from eBeach.se shows that 48% read more on holiday than at home, while only 2% listen to podcasts. 43% choose crime novels, 25% prefer hot romance novels and a fifth prefer autobiographies. In addition, historical novels and non-fiction books are somewhat surprisingly close behind. Here is the top list of Swedes' favourite authors on holiday:
- Camilla Läckberg
- Lars Kepler
- Leif GW Persson
- Henning Mankell
- Mari Jungstedt
- Jan Guillou
- Jojo Moyes
- Martina Haag
- Jens Lapidus
- Roslund & Hellström
The Öresund Bridge set a record
A record number of vehicles crossed the Öresund Bridge in July, says the Öresund Bridge Consortium in a press release. In total, the Öresund Bridge had 847,100 crossings in July, an increase of 1.5 per cent compared to last year. This is the third year in a row that a traffic record has been set on the bridge in July. 22 July was also a traffic record for the bridge with 32,000 crossings.
The world's worst airports
The company Airhelp annually ranks airports based on a number of different factors, such as service, punctuality and social media reviews. They have concluded that Kuwait International Airport is the worst airport in the world. Here is the list of the 10 worst airports in the world:
- Kuwait International Airport
- London Gatwic
- Manchester
- Newark Liberty International
- Edinburgh
- Mumbai
- Dubai International
- Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International
- Delhi
- Los Angeles International
Russia bans anonymous surfing
Vladimir Putin dislikes that the citizens of Russia are surfing the web anonymously using VPN services, and are introducing a banning law that will come into force in a few months. Reporters Without Borders believes the law reduces internet freedom and will affect journalists and the possibility of independent journalism. The new law has already resulted in demonstrations on Russian streets.
New travel emojis?
Booking.com believes that social media is not equipped with the right emojis to show how travellers experience the first day of their holiday. So they have taken the liberty of creating new emojis and launched a campaign appealing to Unicode to start using them.
The most popular additions include a person looking at a map, a person taking a selfie and a person dressed in typical tourist attire.

Matts Torebring says:
Have a nice trip! I guess you are flying this time? I myself avoid flying if possible. Motorhome is the best way to travel. During the holidays I have previously read quite a lot, now excursions on the bikes have probably taken over. This year there were only three books, but none of these authors. Ingemar Stenmark's story was very good and the dog Arhur moved me throughout the book.

Helena says:
Thank you very much Matts! Yes, we fly. There will be a bit too many holiday days otherwise 😉 But otherwise we agree that motorhome is the best way to travel! The books you write about I have not read. Unfortunately, I have not had time to read for a long time, even though I like to read.

Only British says:
I can not believe that Gatwick is so high up and Stansted is not even included. Of course, filing posts because this was big in the British media.
The Öresund Bridge is of course increasing as train travellers have switched to cars because of the ID checks where trains were treated differently with carrier liability.
07 August 2017 - 9:10
Helena says:
Oh it will be interesting to read your post! I have not been to Stansted so it is difficult for me to comment ... And yes, what you write explains why the Öresund Bridge is increasing.

Thank you very much! And agree! Not good with regimes that try to stop the flow of information.

Can note that half of the worst airports I have left to visit. Looking forward to it... 😉 But right now it is ports that apply.
Have a great trip now! 🙂

Haha, yes it is a thing to look forward to ... otherwise I think you are better off in the harbours! 😉

Lena & Jan says:
Have a nice trip! Surprising list of worst airports? Our gateway to the continent; the Öresund Bridge is doing so well that the surplus will be invested in the next bridge between Helsingborg and Helsingør, I heard on Radio Malmöhus.

Helena says:
Well, interesting! I had not heard that! Thanks for the info 🙂

Lying in a deckchair with a mystery novel - well, I can certainly vouch for that, but I would definitely not count Jojo Moyes and Martina Haag as mystery writers. I haven't read any book by Jojo Moyes (only read the back cover of the books) but I suffered through Martina Haag's self-pitying book.
I don't understand Dubai International in that list either. I thought it was the most beautiful and lavish airport I have been to.
Have a wonderful time in Switzerland and enjoy raclette - one of my favourite dishes:-)
07 August 2017 - 21:37
Helena says:
I don't think all the authors on the list were necessarily crime fiction, they were just the most popular ones. Martina Haag I have not read. Jojo Moyes was ok, but mostly entertaining for the moment I thought. And thank you, we will enjoy all that Switzerland has to offer! 🙂

Annette says:
Personally, I read much less on holiday than otherwise, especially in the summer there are so many other things going on. One thing that's strange about the list is that Camilla Läckberg is at the top, and I think almost everyone has read a book by her (even our twelve-year-old has ploughed through three this summer, albeit as audiobooks), and yet she doesn't win awards for her books. Last weekend she was one of the nominees for the Crimetime Specsavers Award for Crime Writer of the Year, but she didn't win this year either, Emelie Schepp did.
I had to sign that petition about the emojis 😉.

Helena says:
I haven't actually read Camilla Läckberg, but that's because I don't read detective stories 😉 And it's interesting that you say she doesn't win ... it seems she has the people's vote! Glad that you signed 😉
