Swiss chocolate - family bakery in Zermatt

When in Switzerland, you don't want to miss eating Swiss chocolate! Yesterday we visited a small family bakery with chocolate production here in Zermatt. The bakery is best known for its small "Matterhorn" in chocolate, and we got to see how the production is done. At the same time, of course, we took the opportunity to check out and try other things in the small bakery ...!

Swiss chocolate at Fuchs

The family bakery fox has been producing sweets for residents and tourists in Zermatt since 1965, and is now in its second generation. We met Philipp Fuchs, who showed us how to make small chocolate "Matterhorns".

Manufacture of 'Matterhorn'

Buying little chocolate "Matterhorns" is very popular and every time the small family bakery produces new ones, they make more than a thousand at a time. And they often do this several times a week ...

The production process begins by pouring first white and then plain chocolate into Matterhorn-shaped moulds and placing them in the freezer. Then it's time for the filling, a nougat paste, to be stirred together and piped into the chocolate pieces. Finally, the pieces are covered with chocolate and placed in the freezer to harden.

Wolli the sheep and BERGFÜHRERBROT

While we were in the bakery, we wanted to see what else was available! We found hot chocolate, cakes shaped like Wolli the black-nosed sheep, bergführerbrot (mountain guide bread) and Swiss-style sausage and bread....

Wollie
The black nose sheep Wolli is apparently some kind of mascot in the area.

If you're wondering what a "mountain guide bread" is, we can tell you that it's a very energy- and nutrient-rich bread with figs and nuts, which can be useful when travelling in the mountains. According to Philipp: "Like an energy bar, but it tastes good". We tried a piece and agree that it was good, but the best was the Matterhorn!
