Finally, Monday and "FREEDOMtravel News". Right? Seriously, what do you think of our travel news on Mondays? We're inundated with press releases every week and enjoy sorting and highlighting the most interesting ones.
But what do you think, is it interesting to read about travel news or would you rather read about other things ...? Today, we can tell you about a design award that SAS perhaps can get, a looming increase in motorhome tax and beauty tips from Emirates airline.

SAS food concept could win design award
Last spring, SAS launched its new food and drink concept on board within Europe. Now the cube, the square packaging in which the food is served, has been nominated for two of the Swedish Design Award's categories: Graphic Identity and Packaging. The design, developed together with the design agency Designit and the supplier DeSter, is unique in the industry and inspired by the take-away culture.
High pressure on Christmas holidays
According to a top list based on bookings made at Resia, Gran Canaria, as usual, tops the list of this year's Christmas holidays. The destination that stands out is Miami, which has climbed to second place. Also Sri Lanka (place 7) and Vietnam (#9) makes it onto the list and Australia continues to be popular (#10). Here are the most booked destinations for Christmas 2017:
- Las Palmas, Gran Canaria
- Miami, Florida
- Phuket, Thailand
- Bangkok, Thailand
- Orlando, Florida
Tax on motorhomes could be shocked
The government has proposed an increased tax on diesel vehicles, such as motorhomes, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The proposal was raised earlier this year, but recently a revised proposal was made, "which could be a disaster for the industry" according to Tomas Haglund, chairman of the Swedish Caravan Association. The proposal has recently been discussed by both Aftonbladet and Husbil & Husvagn.
Half read up on the destination
Just over half of all Swedish travellers read up on the destination before travelling abroad and almost a quarter save money. This is according to a Sifo survey commissioned by Ticket. Vanity preparations are not a priority for Swedish travellers. Only 2 per cent diet or exercise to look good, wax their legs, buy new clothes or new swimwear. Here are the most common preparations:
- Check that the passport is valid (61 %)
- Reading up on the destination (52 %)
- Checking insurance(53 %)
- Vaccinating myself/checking vaccines (29 %)
- Saving money (24 %)
Emirates gives beauty tips
For winter travel, Emirates cabin crew share their best packing and beauty tips for arriving at your destination fresh and rested after a long flight.
Tips include moisturising the skin (and hydrating the body with water and fruit), rolling clothes instead of folding them, packing in unused space (for example in shoes), avoiding stains by using shoe bags, covering leaking shampoo bottles with plastic wrap and tape, using e-books instead of regular books and to choose the lightweight suitcase. Emirates has also developed a film guide.

Ruth in Virginia says:
The increase in taxes is understandable, given the wear and tear that
the large houses-on-wheels cause on the roads, and all the exhaust fumes that the
are released. It will certainly not be a "disaster for the industry",
as crazy as the Swedes are in their caravans. 🙂
I read somewhere that the number of caravans has increased significantly in the last two years.
years.
Always rolled clothes and filled shoes, which were stuffed into plastic bags.
"Arrive fresh and refreshed"! Goes down well in Europe and
East coast of the USA (5-6 hours). If it's California - double that time.
Drink water, drink water! Liquor is dehydrating. So they say.
Good night!

Helena says:
The tax will not affect caravans, Ruth. Caravans are a trailer towed behind normal cars (and they don't run on diesel). This only applies to caravans.
25 September 2017 - 7:21
Ruth in Virginia says:
Of course, there is a difference between motorhomes and caravans.
I remember that you wrote about it earlier.
I have the habit of calling all house-on-wheels caravans.
25 September 2017 - 7:47
Helena says:
Haha ok, then I understand ... For me a caravan is ... a caravan 😉.
25 September 2017 - 19:11
Across the board says:
The new tax proposal will kill all new car sales as it applies to all cars where carbon dioxide emission values are considered. This therefore does not only apply to motorhomes although there has been a big focus on this category. This will therefore mean that many car dealers will have to reduce/dispose of their business as no one will want to buy a new car anymore. ....... This applies to all new vehicles delivered (or possibly manufactured) after 1/7 2018 More about this so-called Bonus-malus system can be read on regeringen.se.
In connection with this, there is also an environmental proposal that affects diesel-powered vehicles. How this is actually going to happen is beyond me. It's not just us camper van drivers who will be screaming, but the entire transport industry. Take a transport to a shop in the city centre. Usually it is a diesel-powered lorry. It may not be able to deliver to the shop at certain times. Perhaps the shop is without goods and therefore loses customers and turnover. And may have to close completely or at least lay off staff as a result.
Two in my eyes totally crazy proposals .... !!!
25 September 2017 - 7:35
Helena says:
Thanks for the good explanation! I hear that you have thoroughly familiarised yourself with this. Yes, I understand that it applies to more than motorhomes, but the diesel proposal does not apply to passenger cars. I also don't understand how it will work, but so far it's just a proposal ... (It's good if we gradually switch to more environmentally friendly fuels, but you can't knock out all the entrepreneurs along the way ...).

Renate's travels says:
In Norway, taxes on motorhomes and ordinary cars are already sky-high... :/ Not good for the average person, but the industry is still alive and well.
I find it strange that only 50 % read about the destination before travelling. You have no idea what to expect when you arrive? 😮
25 September 2017 - 10:40
Helena says:
I agree with you that it's strange that more people don't read up on it. But maybe if you're staying in a charter resort, or if you're going back to a place you've been many times ... then maybe it doesn't seem so important?

Ama de casa says:
I have learnt about e-books in the last year. However, I will probably leave it to "someone else" to choose the actual reading tablet as I was told yesterday that one that I thought looked good, but was perhaps a little plastic in reality was a sign, and nothing else 😀.
There is a real difference between now and the past ("a lot" in the past, that is) in terms of where you travel. Significantly more long journeys at the top of the list.
25 September 2017 - 10:44
Helena says:
Haha, I thought the "tablet" on your blog looked just like a tablet 😉 And yes, Swedes travel a lot and far. It is not so terribly sorry for us perhaps ...

Goatfish says:
It's incredible how much people travel, both short and long distance. It is clear that this must affect the environment. Now I saw on the different motorways what enormous amounts and queues there were. Much wear and tear and shit in the air there. Also the aeroplanes.
And the bags are getting lighter and lighter. A lady on the bus had bought a very super light bag, and it took up a lot of space (!) not so good, no?
I always roll clothes and have packing bags, VERY handy.
25 September 2017 - 14:08
Helena says:
Of course, travelling affects the environment! But sustainability is so important today that I think all travel companies will be forced to think more and more about it.

Matts Torebring says:
The caravan tax and many other decisions, which are completely unworthy of a country like Sweden, speak a clear language. We must change government as soon as possible, but no later than in a year!
25 September 2017 - 17:39
Helena says:
I'll avoid political discussions I think (not considered appropriate when working in a politically controlled organisation I think ;)) but I'm not entirely happy with the tax proposal ...

Hope you have a great time in Croatia! Health!!! 🙂

Role o Carina says:
Gran Canarias and Florida have been to, just gives more taste! 🙂
This government is crazy with its increases on motorhomes!
Luckily you can cancel every time we don't go 🙂 !
Take care.......

Helena says:
We have never been to Florida. The USA is not the country that attracted us the most, but who knows? You should never say never 🙂
25 September 2017 - 22:17
BP says:
As for diesel, Munich, for example, already has a ban on all diesel vehicles. In England, the goal is to abolish all diesel cars by 2040. But Sweden probably wants to get some tax revenue on the way there, it seems...
PS. Like your "news" on Mondays. Then again, I might find the news about diesel more interesting than a design award for SAS, but that's me;-) DS
25 September 2017 - 20:55
Helena says:
You don't seem to be alone in finding that news more interesting 😉 Glad you like our news! There will be more and more environmentally friendly fuels over time, the only question is how and when ...
25 September 2017 - 22:19
Solan says:
Press releases are all very well, but they can be read everywhere. So that's it. Motorhome tax, which we already pay about 8,000 a year, should be enough. The proposal apparently only applies to new motorhomes. Bad enough. I think that those of us who prefer mobile holiday homes should not be taxed. Bottom line?
25 September 2017 - 22:25
Helena says:
I can understand how you feel about press releases. This is perhaps the least personal thing we write and certainly the information can be found in more places. At the same time, it will be our small selection of news. We'll see what we do in the future!
26 September 2017 - 7:09
Leif Strandberg says:
As usual, motorists are being squeezed... We've seen this before, now it's time for motorhomes... strange when motorhomes stay within the approved emission limits, but are still being squeezed.
The environmental elves have got their..politics yes indeed..money and taxes.
Soon it will be time for sailors to pay wind tax !!!!
Live well ... life goes on.
26 September 2017 - 2:41
Helena says:
It's just a proposal so far ... so let's hope it doesn't go through. Those who live will see ...

I like your Monday NEWS, hope you continue with them 🙂 The diesel news is interesting and hot, but I like the news about the design award. Those little boxes at SAS are so nice, it feels really cosy and a little luxurious to get the food in them.
28 September 2017 - 13:46
Helena says:
Glad to hear that you like our news! So far the plan is to continue with them 🙂 And personally I also like those boxes! Feels a bit modern and fresh!

Lena - good for the soul says:
Yes, of course it's fun to read about the news. Especially since it is usually such a mixture. High and low as well.

Helena says:
Glad to hear you like the mix! We usually try to get some different types of news, ranging from travel surveys, preferably some technical news and preferably something from the camping industry as well.
