Wow, there's a lot to write about from our Royal Caribbean cruise in the Mediterranean! We're stopping at a new destination every day, but we thought you might like to hear about the boat itself too? We may be a little behind with the posts about the destinations during the cruise. Today we will tell you about what happens on board the Freedom of the Seas.
Table of contents
How does it work on a cruise?
We're new to cruising and it's taken us some time to get to grips with how things work on board. When we get home, we'll write a more detailed post about all the practicalities - from costs to unwritten rules. We'll also show films from the cruise. We just need some time to edit them first!
In the meantime, here are some pictures and stories from our days on board the Freedom of the Seas. There really is so much to do on this ship!
Hang out in the pool
On deck eleven there are a whole bunch of outdoor pools. In most it is quite lively, but at one end there is a slightly quieter pool area. On the sides, overlooking the sea, there are two whirlpools and here we hung out for a while the second day on board. Not wrong at all!
Evenings in restaurants
We have a fixed table at Leonardo's restaurant, and so far we have eaten there every night. You get a different menu every night with starters, main courses and desserts, and everything has been good. There are other restaurants to choose from too, but if you stick to the ones included in the price of the cruise, the choice is limited.
Shower
If you look at the programme, there almost always seems to be a show going on. It could be anything from stand-up comedy to a musical. We haven't had time to check out so many shows, but we did take a look at a musical. The theatre was completely full!
Ice skating
One of the craziest things we've done on board so far is ... ice skating! There is an ice rink on the third deck, where you can borrow skates and do a few laps. Neither of us are very good at skating, but we had nothing to be ashamed of. There were plenty of Spaniards in the rink who were probably trying it for the first time.
On board the Freedom of the Seas
Sometimes it's nice to retreat to the cabin! We have a nice cabin with a comfortable bed, a good shower and - above all - a lovely balcony with a view. This morning, for the first time, we will try ordering breakfast to the cabin and eating it on the balcony!
Part of this trip is a press trip, in cooperation with Royal Caribbean.

Not bad. Looks like you are having a really nice time. Have cruised once in the Caribbean but never where you are. But now I have to stop reading the blog for today. Have 15 min left to check out here at the hotel in Astana in Kazakhstan. 🙂
06 September 2017 - 7:44
Helena says:
Fun that you cruised in the Caribbean! We would love to try that too 🙂 Nice trip!

åsa in åsele says:
Except that cruising is in a boat on the sea 😉 it sounds wonderful.
Now I would definitely not put my foot there... but nice to read about your trip 🙂.
06 September 2017 - 8:01
Helena says:
Haha, yes that it is on a boat you can't escape ... 😉 But there is everything you can wish for on board!

Mr Nils-Åke Hansson says:
Not much is missing there. Breakfast in the morning sun what a hit
06 September 2017 - 8:21
Helena says:
And we've only written about some of the things that exist ... I don't even think we've discovered everything yet! 😉

Lisa in the village says:
Unbelievable, what a magnificent boat. Do you have the feeling of being on a cruise at sea?
Have a good time!
06 September 2017 - 8:44
Helena says:
When you're inside a theatre or something, you don't think much about being at sea. But as soon as you go out on deck (and there are many occasions for that) you feel both the sea and the fresh sea air. When you have a cabin with a balcony, you also see the sea outside all the time from the cabin! 🙂
06 September 2017 - 8:48
Helena says:
It doesn't seem to be that bad on board the boat! 🙂
06 September 2017 - 9:00
Helena says:
There is no need for us 😉

Solan says:
...like the whole sea is storming...but on board the giant boat. T
another round on the skating rink!!!
06 September 2017 - 9:07
Helena says:
Haha, yes why not. But there is also a lot of other things to discover ... will return about this!
06 September 2017 - 10:47
Ditte says:
Yes, there is usually no shortage of things to do on board. Almost difficult to experience and find what is available in a week.
A good and comfortable cabin is important, and a balcony is particularly nice.
Wishing you continued great experiences both on board and on land.
06 September 2017 - 9:08
Helena says:
Yes, it's probably difficult to get everything done ... I don't think we'll go for it 😉 I love the balcony 🙂 ).

Emma, sun like sun? says:
I wonder what they were thinking with the ice drink ...
- It would be nice to have a football pitch!
- Yes, but imagine all the footballs that end up in the sea, we would have to stop and pick them up all the time.
- OK, so no balls ... We have plenty of pools so not another one ... Scandinavians like snow ... a slalom slope?
- Too big. And we would have to pick up people instead of balls from the sea when they couldn't stop in time.
- Well ... true ... A little waste? No ... Oh! Now I know!
06 September 2017 - 9:23
Helena says:
Haha, your comment is wonderful! Read it out loud to Peter and we both had a good laugh. Yes, one can really wonder how the reasoning went ... 😉 .
06 September 2017 - 10:49
Emma, sun like sun? says:
I love thinking about how people reason! It's not always as interesting to hear how they really did it, but sometimes reality beats fantasy by a mile!
I see things here in my surroundings that I would almost like to knock on and hear how the thoughts really went ... 😀.
A bit like this:
- Hola? says the woman who opens the door inquiringly.
- Hola, I reply. Excuse me, but what were you thinking when you chose to paint the whole house neon orange? Was it a mistake, or what?
Glad you had a laugh!
06 September 2017 - 16:12
Helena says:
Haha, yes there are many times you can really wonder how certain decisions came about! It probably happens that we think that way too. Sometimes about how people combined their clothes, for example 😉.

Mr Steve says:
I'm getting a bit tired just reading about the offerings on the boat. Can you say boat, by the way? It sounds a bit silly considering what's on offer.
I like the cabin with a balcony. Nice to have your own corner to rest in between all the experiences/adventures.
06 September 2017 - 9:37
Helena says:
I also say boat sometimes, but I feel the same way... Ship is probably better suited 😉.
06 September 2017 - 10:50
Husis blog says:
Interesting post with what is on board. But judging from your post, can interpret it wrong, it is difficult to get peace and quiet except in the room. Seemed to be a lot of chirping and chirping at the pool... Interesting to hear what you say at the end of the trip, if you get tired of this after a while or if you get used to it!
06 September 2017 - 10:01
Helena says:
There are more quiet places on the ship, but it is true that there is a lot of noise in many places.
06 September 2017 - 10:51
snort says:
What a lovely cabin and balcony you have! I myself remember the boat trips when we lived in simple cabins under the car deck. Anything but funny, but there is no need for you.
06 September 2017 - 10:31
Helena says:
I've also experienced driving under car tyres ... this is much better! 🙂

I am enjoying every second of reading about your cruise. It is life to discover the world when you have the hotel with you. I only have experience of just Royal C., but there are other shipping companies I have heard. Have a great time!

Helena says:
Fun that you also crossed with just Royal Caribbean! First time for us 🙂
06 September 2017 - 14:41
Ama de casa says:
Damn it! We should never have left our ship so soon... Already looking forward to returning 🙂 Although our boat was not as luxurious as yours - it had no skating rink. I will write to them and complain! 😀
Keep up the good work!
06 September 2017 - 12:32
Helena says:
No way, didn't you have a skating rink!!!? What kind of cruise ship was it ...????? ?
06 September 2017 - 14:42

I would have loved to go ice skating there 🙂 .

It was almost unbelievable to see, what a luxury. I did not know that there was so much on board. Enjoy!

06 September 2017 - 18:55
Helena says:
Haha, yeah something like that maybe 😉.

BP says:
To be honest, the best place on the boat is clearly the cabin and the balcony - "a room with a view" - kind of. The rest is a mix between Las Vegas, Vingresor's teddy bear club, a theatre and a Finnish boat. Too much "fake luxury" for my taste.
As for the food, I don't want to eat anything "international" that is included in all inclusive either. There I want to try the specialities of the Mediterranean. It is a Mediterranean cruise so ...

Ruth in Virginia says:
As usual / Ruth agrees with you. Las Vegas type entertainment
makes me - I don't know what, but I can't imagine attending.
Have also commented before about the giant cruise ships
which must contribute to the oceans getting dirtier and dirtier.
We are apparently in the minority. - Give me an oak tree in Bergslags lake, and I´ll
be happy. 🙂
Anyway, it is interesting to read about cruises.
06 September 2017 - 21:05
BP says:
Hahaha! No, an eka is probably nothing for me either, as I then have to row;-)
I can say that my brother-in-law who is in a wheelchair (he has MS) and his wife have been on Freedomtravel and AMA cruises for the last eight years. If you are "disabled", cruises are a perfect way to "travel around" I think. Then everything becomes so much easier and everything is kind of accessible if you want to see the world from a "boat perspective", because often the cities you come to are not "accessible" for wheelchairs / permobiles.
Of course, it is fun to read about both Freedomtravel's and Ama's cruises and go to all these places. You do not have to go yourself if you have not been there, right;-)
06 September 2017 - 22:28
Ruth in Virginia says:
Here we come apart, BP. I like to "rougha" it.
One of the best experiences I've had was that canoeing
camping in Ontario. You had to both paddle and set up
tents plus dig a hole in the ground for some personal items.
But then I was also married to a geologist!
06 September 2017 - 22:40
Helena says:
Wonderful to follow your conversation, BP and Ruth! I can understand your point and understand that cruising is not suitable for everyone. For us it has been a very interesting experience and we will return with more reports!

It looks marvellous! And you don't have to be bored on the boat trip....
07 September 2017 - 9:13

There are always things to do on board! 🙂

Ann Beutler says:
How nice that you seem satisfied! We have cruised with RCC and Norweigen CL. Hard to say which one is best. Maybe RCC is a bit more up class... but Norweigen has better food at the speciality restaurants. 5 cruises so far and 1 Dec it's time again. 10 days from Barca. It will be nice. Have a good time!
