Yesterday we tried sushi on a conveyor belt in the Mall of Scandinavia in Solna. Or rather, Peter has actually tried it before, but this time he took me with him. We were going to shop for some clothes for once and at the same time we thought we would take the opportunity to eat sushi - on a conveyor belt. Really fun, I must say. And yes, good too!
Budda Khan Teppanyaki
The restaurant we visited is called Budda Khan Teppanyaki and is located inside the Mall of Scandinavia. Here you can choose whether you want to eat sushi on a conveyor belt, teppanyaki (dishes that are grilled on an iron plate in front of the guests), Asian food from the menu or Asian buffet. I definitely wanted to try the sushi on a conveyor belt!
On evenings and weekends, the price for conveyor belt sushi is SEK 299 per person, but if you come here for lunch on a weekday, you can have the exact same meal for half the price. The staff shows you to a table next to the conveyor belt and then you can just dig in. You eat as much as you want!
Sushi on a conveyor belt - Kaiten sushi
Sushi on a conveyor belt, or "Kaiten sushi" as it is actually called, is an experience if you haven't had it before. I had a hard time taking my eyes off the belt. All the time, small plates of goodies roll by behind glass. When you want, you can open a door and grab a plate.
Lots of goodies
The small plates come travelling on two floors. On the bottom floor, classic sushi pieces and other cold treats such as prawns, crayfish, melon and the occasional dessert. On the top floor, there are hot little surprises: fried prawns, dumplings, stir-fried vegetables, gratinated mussels, small dishes with meat and mushrooms, and many more.
The food does not get five stars, but everything was good and above all we had a very nice and fun experience! Have you tried sushi on a conveyor belt? What did you think?
Lennart says:
Sure, it's good.
You can eat quite a lot too!

Went to a sushi bar with a conveyor belt in Camps Bay outside Cape Town. However, we did not eat sushi but superb seafood from the regular menu.
Really entertaining to sit there in the bar and watch the sushi chefs' technique when fixing the sushi and try to guess which of the dishes it would be when they were finished. 🙂

Helena says:
Sounds like a nice restaurant experience! And seafood is (almost) never wrong 🙂.

Mr Steve says:
What they come up with. Sushi is one of the few foods I don't like. I've tried a few times, but I didn't get hooked, so no conveyor belt sushi for me.
24 September 2017 - 8:56
Helena says:
I was also wondering how such an idea came about in the first place ... Then I realised that, at least in China, it is very common to have round tables with a spinning disc in the middle so you can spin the food around to everyone. And I thought that maybe this is a further development of that concept ...?

Mr Nils-Åke Hansson says:
21 barrels you must have been hungry. I don't think sushi is my taste!
24 September 2017 - 9:04
Helena says:
Haha, yes we were hungry! Hard to stop when it's so good... 😉.

Both delicious and cosy there :)hugs

Ama de casa says:
Soooo good! Have tried sushi on a conveyor belt in a couple of places, but then you had to pay for each sushi you took. There were different prices depending on which barrel you chose, do not remember how much (though not 299 SEK each 😉 ). A very nice way to eat, it is just a matter of being correctly placed so you get the first one 😀.
24 September 2017 - 9:32
Helena says:
Maybe it's common to pay per plate? I have never eaten sushi on a conveyor belt anywhere else ... but it was a little nice to know the price before and not have to think about it at the table actually. And yes, we thought we got a fairly good location 😉.

Across the board says:
What a fun idea, we'll have to try that sometime if we get there!

I think so! 🙂

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
Even though I am basically an omnivore, sushi is not my first choice when it comes to food. The idea is at least fun and a bit like the tapas concept we had in Spain last autumn, but there you had to go and help yourself and waiters ran around with different trays with new hot tapas. There we paid by the piece so after a while we had eaten tapas for a considerable sum (but it is good with small dishes).
24 September 2017 - 14:00
Helena says:
Tapas are also nice! I like small dishes in general! 🙂

Love sushi, we must try that next time we are in MoS 🙂 Thanks for the tip! When you mentioned the spinning disc that they have in China, I thought of what happened to my husband when he was at a business dinner there, with dinner at just such a rolling disc. He should have been a little better informed about different cultures... The manager of the company that offered dinner spun the disc so that everyone could take from it. When Patrik saw something more appealing, he spun the disc himself to get what he wanted. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, as Brasse would have said. It is apparently a great insult to those who are worthy, to help themselves. As if the host has not been sufficiently attentive to the guests' wishes. The same thing with toasting. Apparently, the senior manager should toast with his glass higher up than the person who is lower in the hierarchy. Yes, help, I think I'll stay in Europe 😉.
24 September 2017 - 14:42
Helena says:
But what you say about the spinning disc is so interesting! Certainly there is a lot to learn about table manners abroad. At the same time, I think it is very difficult in Europe ... for others. The cultural stuff is not easy ... but interesting!

Didn't know there was conveyor belt sushi 😉 .
Perhaps I live in the wrong place to take part in such things 🙂 ).
24 September 2017 - 15:11

Yes, haha, honestly, I suspect you live in the wrong place for this phenomenon. It's actually Japanese and can be found in some places in Sweden, but maybe not very many ...

Dregel, dregel! I have eaten sushi on a conveyor belt when there was a Japanese restaurant in Gallerian. Unfortunately, it no longer exists.
Have also enjoyed Teppanyaki at Liins Wok House at Torsplan, not far from where you used to work.
24 September 2017 - 18:38
Helena says:
Glad you tried teppanyaki, I haven't .... But maybe it will be on occasion! Now I work at Fleminggatan, but I hang around Torsplan sometimes because the county council has many activities there 😉.
24 September 2017 - 21:26
JoY says:
Oh how ashamed I am that I have not even been to the big mall! Must blame that it is the wrong side of the city hihihi
Teppanyaki is very good and likewise very long since we ate. However, Sushi, well, we have tried a few times and did not get more taste. But in the pictures you show, it looks so nice. You are not worse than you can change and give it another chance.
Are all the tables placed next to the band and it goes around the whole restaurant? If not, do you have to go and get it or how does it work?
Hugs
24 September 2017 - 19:33
Helena says:
So, you don't have to be ashamed for not having been there ... but feel free to check it out if you get the chance! 😉 And I know that not everyone likes sushi. Of course, you don't have to, but I myself think it's really good. Yes, everyone sits at the band, pretty much! Sometimes there are six seats, but at least someone in the company sits at the band then.

Yes, the owners have tried Sushi on two occasions, but never in Sweden. It has been at two different restaurants in Thailand but unfortunately it was not something that the owners liked, but there is other good food too?
24 September 2017 - 21:26
Helena says:
Of course, you don't have to like sushi, there is plenty of other fantastic food! I myself love sushi, so I can't wait if it takes a long time .... 😉

Ditte says:
How nice! And a large and varied selection. Certainly well worth trying, but sometimes when many cuisines are mixed, it becomes something that is not quite top notch. But the price is quite ok and it looked very fresh.
We have tried sushi on a conveyor belt in London, Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore and it was really good. Always fun to see how the sushi chefs work and what incredible speed they have.
Otherwise, I am very fond of "real tepanyaki" where you sit in a semi-circle at a table, around a "own tepanyaki chef" who cooks all the food ordered in front of you and delivers it when it is ready. However, I have not tested this concept in Sweden but in Asia in several places.
Will definitely try this restaurant in MoS. Thanks for the tip!
24 September 2017 - 22:58
Helena says:
This is exactly the kind of teppanyaki they have at this restaurant, if I understand it correctly. You can see the semi-circular tables with their own chef.

Have only eaten teriyaki, sukiyaki and tempura. Was a guest at
a Japanese family here, where they were offered a huge tray made of
sushi. Some was OK, but most did not suit my palate.
Too much fish and seaweed flavour for me.
A couple of Japanese women stayed here for a few days. They liked American food,
but for breakfast, miso soup was absolutely necessary;
had small packets of miso powder with them. Maybe a bit like
Swedes with instant coffee, when they come here. 🙂
25 September 2017 - 0:37
Helena says:
I know that not everyone likes sushi. I love it myself, but on the other hand I like fish a lot. Interesting that the Japanese ate miso soup for breakfast! Breakfast habits can be a bit hard to live without, so you can understand them 🙂 .

Oh how fun with sushi bands in Sweden. I have probably never seen it. The first time I tried it was in Australia 5 years ago and I've been wishing there would be something like that in Sweden ever since! Now I have a reason to go to Mall of Scandinavia too, haha.

I ate conveyor belt sushi in the same restaurant almost a year ago. The food was mediocre but the idea is fun. I was there for lunch and the conveyor belts were not filled with as many plates as in your pictures. In addition, we happened to sit at the latter part of the band and then other guests had already picked up the dishes. Or more cheeky: They had taken the food but left the empty plates on the conveyor belt. So we had to sit and wait for a plate to arrive from time to time. Not fun at all.
When we complained, the waiter told someone that he could not be responsible for what other guests do. So no, have not been there any more time.
26 September 2017 - 1:13
Helena says:
But how sad that you had such an experience Bitte! I can agree that it was not the absolute highest quality of food (although everything tasted good), but otherwise we did not have the experience that you had. Our band was packed at all times and we didn't see any empty plates. But I understand that you were not satisfied!

Anna in Dubai says:
I get completely stressed out by all the plates that I don't have time to eat. Everything just rolls by and I want to take everything. It's a perfect way to get people to take everything that looks good when you're hungry and then just hell... I can't take it anymore. Then you roll out yourself. Full of rice.

I have had a buffet at that restaurant. I think the buffet was pretty new then. I was so curious about the conveyor belts, but neither I nor my company are sushi fans so we had to settle for looking.
