On the way home from Jogersö camping in Oxelösund, we took the opportunity to drive past the island of Femöre, which is connected to the mainland by a small bridge. We had been advised to check out the lighthouse keeper's house, the Femöre fortress and, not least, the view. We were not disappointed, so to speak! In addition, it was a real British summer on Sunday, with sunny and warm autumn weather.
Femöre in Oxelösund
Femöre is an island with beautiful nature, scenic hiking trails and fine cliffs. At the far end of Femörehuvud is the former top-secret Femöre Fort, which is now a museum of the Cold War. The fort is open during the summer and on special occasions for guided tours. Femörehuvud is also home to the lighthouse keeper's house (top picture), which can be rented for overnight stays.
Memories of the Cold War
Femörefortet is a giant nuclear-armed facility where 70 soldiers would defend the Bråviken area against a major invasion of the Baltic Sea by the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. The fort was in use between 1966 and 2003, and is now a museum.
Since the museum is only open in the summer, we couldn't go inside, but instead we could look around at all the military remains that are everywhere in the area.
Guest harbour and camping site
In Femöre marina there is a guest harbour and a parking place for motorhomes. We only parked at the site for ten minutes to look around, but if you want to stay overnight the price is 150 SEK without electricity and 200 SEK with electricity.
According to the information board, there are bins for rubbish, toilets and showers (SEK 5 for a three-minute shower), water and emptying of grey and black water. You look out over rather dull cranes, but next door there is a cosy little harbour and a restaurant.

"Your" swans, haha, I didn't know that 😉 Yes, we had fantastic weather!
17 October 2017 - 20:16
Only British says:
Well they stay between the lighthouse and "my rocks" on the other side of the bay you drove along to get out there. A hard-working couple.
17 October 2017 - 20:54
Helena says:
What fun! 🙂 Understand what you mean, we have a heron and have had a struggling duck pair in the same way here in marina 🙂 .
17 October 2017 - 21:25
snort says:
How funny! My blogger friend has a summer house there called "Femöre" so I wonder if it's the same....
17 October 2017 - 8:50
Helena says:
The whole island is called Femöre, but it sounds like the summer house could be over there, maybe? 🙂
17 October 2017 - 20:17
Only British says:
Exactly, that's the whole island. Actually a peninsula until they dug a canal (in the 20's I think, we have been living there since 1924).
17 October 2017 - 20:48
Helena says:
Only British, impressive! You have really been around for a long time! 🙂
17 October 2017 - 21:26

Femöre doesn't sound like much, but there seems to be a lot to see there. An overnight stay in the lighthouse keeper's house sounds quite cosy. What fantastic weather on an October Sunday.

17 October 2017 - 20:25

Haha, no, the fort was sold for five cents by the Fortification Authority, I think. Otherwise the name is the same as in Öregrund etc.
17 October 2017 - 20:49
Helena says:
Is it true? It was a cheap fortress! 🙂
17 October 2017 - 21:26
