This weekend has been really intense and full of unexpected events. We have a lot to blog about I can say! But before that: FREEDOMtravel News. From this week's crop of press releases, we can tell you about this autumn's hottest weekend getaways and the best theme parks in Europe.
Autumn's hottest weekend trips
The desire to travel is extremely high this autumn and shorter weekend trips are very trendy, according to recent booking statistics from Ticket Privatresor. The weekend city that climbs the fastest up the lists (and ends up at number 6) is Munich, which increases by more than 237 per cent.
Barcelona, which is currently in the news because of Catalonia's vote for independence, comes in at number five. Here is the list of Sweden's five most popular weekend cities this autumn:
Ryanair cancels more flights
Less than two weeks ago, Ryanair announced the cancellation of nearly 2,100 flights in September due to a pilot shortage, affecting 315,000 passengers. The pilot shortage arose when pilots were forced to take their holidays before the end of the year due to changes in regulations.
With pilots refusing to cancel their holidays, Ryanair is taking 25 aircraft out of service and cancelling 34 routes, equivalent to 18,000 flights. One route from Sweden is affected: Stockholm Skavsta - Sofia, Bulgaria.
Europe's best theme parks
The European Star Awards were recently presented to Europe's best amusement parks, with Sweden's Liseberg taking fourth place. "It is an honour that Sweden and Liseberg are doing so well internationally. We work hard to offer our guests world-class experiences and I see this award as a sign that we have chosen the right path," says Daniel Lindberg, Liseberg's Head of Attractions, in a press release. Here are Europe's five best amusement parks, according to the award:
- Europa-Park, Germany
- PortAventura Park, Spain
- Disneyland Park Paris, France
- Liseberg, Sweden
- Efteling, Netherlands
The social trip becomes a slot machine
Sällskapsresan is now not only a film, but also a casino game. Lasse Åberg has a slightly different collaboration with the gaming company Paf, resulting in a game based on the 80s classic where Stig-Helmer goes on a charter holiday. Lasse Åberg is donating part of the profits from the game to the Sustainable Seas Foundation.
unhealthy on a business trip
Travelling for work is a challenge when you want to live a healthy lifestyle. According to a survey conducted by TNS SIFO on behalf of Resia Företag, one fifth of Swedish business travellers say they eat more unhealthy food when travelling for work. Many also sleep less, drink more beer and wine in the evenings and have no time for exercise. Top 5 - How travelling negatively affects health business and conference travel:
- I eat more unhealthy food
- I sleep less well
- I drink more beer and wine in the evening
- I don't have time to exercise
- I can't resist coffee/treats at meetings

Ama de casa says:
Oops. I must be on a conference trip, I think, because I don't have time to train either... 😉.
Have a great start to the week!

Helena says:
Haha... We're not constantly travelling for business, but regular trips are enough for us to eat too much and exercise too little... 😉.

Dryden - Traveller's Edition says:
There weren't many exciting cities on that top five list. But it's great that Liseberg is doing so well!

Helena says:
Exciting and unexpected destinations rarely make it into the top lists ... But, go Liseberg! 🙂

Alexandra says:
Speaking of Ryanair, I also saw that the British airline Monarch is cancelling all its flights!
Hmm exciting that with unhealthy on the business trip - although perhaps not so unexpected. You should be able to do some business on it..hmmmm 😉 .
02 October 2017 - 12:29
Helena says:
Yes, I saw that with Monarch... lots of cancelled flights now! And yes, you can target business travellers! 🙂

Mr Steve says:
Copenhagen was my and D's absolute weekend favourite for many years.
Barcelona was added at the end of my travelling career.
I recognise points 1, 3 and 4 of the negative impact of business travel from that time. However, points 2 and 5 were not on my list.

Helena says:
I can probably recognise all five points from work trips (and press trips!)... That's why Peter and I need to train now! 😉

Marina says:
In other words, I'm not that original when it comes to the most popular weekend trips... I've done all of them, although Amsterdam was a very short version and may require another one before I can say I've "been there properly"... It's cool that Liseberg is so high up among Europe's amusement parks.

Helena says:
I've also done all the cities on the list, but I did Paris and London on a language trip when I was 15 so it's been a while... 😉.

BP says:
Nice to read that London and Paris are still so attractive despite all the terrorist attacks. Fortunately, terror has not triumphed there.
I've visited Disneyland in Paris and was quite impressed when I compared it to Disney World in Orlando, Florida... Fun with Liseberg in fourth place.
"I drink more beer and wine in the evenings", yes, I do that during the holidays too, but I have not been affected by the other points;-)
02 October 2017 - 18:53
Helena says:
Yes indeed, I'm glad that the terror hasn't affected the way people travel to any great extent after all!

So fun that Europa-Park came out on top, it really is a fantastic park! That London is at the top is a bit exciting, I myself have thought about a weekend there, but chickened out because there have been so many acts there lately (:
02 October 2017 - 20:09
Helena says:
Glad you've been to Europa-Park! Sad that you should have to feel anxious because of acts. Still, nice to see that people are actually travelling anyway!
