Yesterday our blog colleague Lena, with the blog Ladies Abroad, presented her favourite castles and palaces in Europe. We're also fans of grandiose buildings, and were keen to present our favourite castles and palaces in Europe. Have you seen any of these impressive buildings? Or do you have more tips for cool castles in Europe?
Table of contents
1. Konopiste Forest Castle, Czech Republic
Forty miles south of Prague, hidden in the woods, is Konopiště Castle. We arrived here at dusk and had a magical experience among deer and rose gardens, as darkness closed in and a strange 'moaning' sound grew in intensity.
2. Carcassonne, France
Located between Toulouse and Narbonne in the south of France, Carcassonne is actually a fortified city with a history dating back to both Roman and medieval times. When the city was renovated in the 19th century, it was given its characteristic roofs, which are also recognised from the game of the same name.
3rd Baranów Sandomierski, Poland
In south-eastern Poland, not far from the border with Ukraine, we found Baranów Sandomierski Castle. This Renaissance castle was built in the 16th century and is famous for its beautiful staircase, which looks like it's straight out of a fairy tale.
4. sago castle Neuschwanstein, Germany
Neuschwenstein Castle is located in Bavaria in southern Germany and was built by King Ludwig II in the 19th century. The fact that this castle was used as a model for Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle is not hard to understand! What's more, almost every room is decorated with a theme, such as Tristan and Isolde.
5. Chateau Lednice, Czech Republic
Located south of Brno in the Czech Republic, Chateau Lednice must be one of the most magnificent castles we've ever seen. It was the Liechtenstein family who once had this "little" residence as their summer holiday home. The family was unfortunately forced to leave the palace, but apparently there was no need for them anyway.
6. Malbork, Poland
Malbork is Poland's largest castle - an almost impregnable fortress with moats, drawbridges and solid walls. This medieval fortress was built by the Teutonic Order in the 14th century, and here you can learn about the exciting technical solutions for comfortable living.
7. Mont St Michel, France
Mont St Michel may actually be a monastery surrounded by ramparts, but the feeling is that of an impregnable castle. Situated on the Normandy coast, this fascinating structure is positioned so that originally, before the bridge was built, it could only be reached at low tide...!
8th Kozlowka Palace, Poland
In eastern Poland, Kozlowka Palace is a rococo and neoclassical palace built in the first half of the 18th century. In the middle of the Polish countryside, you will find a fascinatingly beautiful palace... and a collection of uranium glass!

There are many cool castles in Europe! Neuschwanstein is worth a visit, but preferably choose the low season... it's a popular place 😉.

I have been to two of these, Neuschwenstein and Mont St Michel. Incredible buildings! It's hard to understand how they could have been built...what hard work for those who did it! I have not been inside the castle Neuschwenstein, there were soooo many people there! It was also at Mont St Michel, but that's how it is when we are travelling in the summer. My children were at Mont Saint Michel, they were in their teens and younger so and were very fascinated by that place! Another fantastic castle is Palacio Pena in Sintra, a bit outside Lisbon, which I have visited twice. Worth seeing!

Helena says:
Agree that these two buildings are amazing! We visited Mont St Michel in December and Neuschwanstein in November. Mont St Michel was empty (nice and quiet!) but Neuschwanstein was still full of people... we did manage to see the inside of the castle though! The castle in Sintra seems amazing. Lena with the blog Ladies Abroad (which I linked to at the top) has written about it.

Ditte says:
There are so many castles and fortresses around. Of those you presented, I have visited Carcassonne and Mont St Michel. Nice to read about more castles.
In Spain, I have visited some smaller castles and palaces but can't remember the names.
Prague Castle is outstanding in its own right and the castle in Krakow is also worth a visit, as is the city.

There are so many castles and fortresses around Europe! And it is lucky sometimes that you write things in a blog, otherwise it would be hopeless to remember the names of all the places! 😉

Hmm... I wonder if I have visited a single castle in my entire life? Maybe... But definitely never a castle 😉 😀 .
25 November 2017 - 9:58
Helena says:
Haha, they have a tendency to be high up those castles ... The castles can probably more often be "on the flat" 😉.

Ladies Abroad says:
Neuschwenstein is already on my "several castles to visit list" but I had forgotten about Mont St Michel. Thanks for the reminder and the link.
25 November 2017 - 10:06
Helena says:
Mont St Michel is perhaps more of a monastery, but a very cool place!

Mr Steve says:
There are so many beautiful and powerful things that I have no idea about. A tour of castles and palaces in Europe would have been something to embark on when I was still travelling. Now, as so often, I have to look in with you and "travel".
When we drove around France in 2000, I remember "bumping into" lots of old châteaux and castles, often "in the middle of nowhere".
25 November 2017 - 11:37
Helena says:
It's true that there are castles and fortresses everywhere in Europe. Unbelievable really!

Ruth in Virginia says:
Without your journeys, I wouldn't have had a clue about all the amazing
castles in Eastern Europe; Poland and the Czech Republic, etc. What riches
it must have existed during certain times. Who were the architects?
Who were the artists who created the beautiful interiors?
Unknown masters.
Your drone photos are also works of art !!!! - Have a nice weekend!

What amazing buildings there are! Nice to have a list like this. Yes, I remember when you wrote about the overnight stay and the moaning sounds ...
I visited Neuschwanstein on my first train journey, at the age of 18. I remember the air was pretty thin up there and the view was absolutely beautiful.
25 November 2017 - 15:48
Helena says:
Glad you visited Neuschwanstein so early!

We haven't been to any of these castles, but we absolutely love the castle campsites, within the Les Castel group in France. This is why we have spent the last five summers in France.
25 November 2017 - 16:08
Helena says:
Yes, I know you like these castle campsites! Doesn't sound stupid at all! 🙂

Razzy says:
Wow, what castles and fortresses, there is something magical about them. A tip from me is Kassel Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel Germany, they have a giant water game with water stairs, streams, water viaducts and various fountains where the last one is 20m high. It starts high up at the pleasure castle and goes down to the big castle. It is only started once a week and all the water is collected rainwater. Super delicious.
25 November 2017 - 16:08
Helena says:
What an interesting tip! Thank you very much! Then you should preferably dot the right day of the week then 😉

Of the places on your list, I can only tick off Neuschwanstein and Mont St Michel. I just realise that most of Eastern Europe is uncharted territory for me, so there's a lot left to discover.
25 November 2017 - 16:59
Helena says:
Eastern Europe really has a lot to see! An interesting part of Europe to travel around!

Of course, there are a lot of "taxes" in Europe, which means that Hässelby Slott doesn't really qualify, so to speak;-).
I have visited Carcassonne, Neuschwanstein (my absolute favourite), Malbork and Mon St Michel. Then the whole Loire Valley is a "castle motorway" I think, as well as Versailles, Fontainebleau, and Chantilly near Paris. But nothing beats Neuschwanstein!
25 November 2017 - 18:17
Helena says:
No, Hesselby Castle was not on our list actually, although I like that castle too 😉 The Loire Valley I would like to visit as well as Versaille! We have some left 😉 .
