Today we can tell you about hot weekend cities for spring 2018 and exciting destinations for the coming year. We can also tell you about Europe's best cake(!) cities. And in the same week, we have two news about electric bikes. What do you think of this week's travel news?

Winter bikes for the environment
Sören Kjellkvist will be cycling with an electric bike along the entire Swedish coast, from Haparanda to Smygehuk, and then on to... Strömstad. The cycling takes place in collaboration with the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, and to focus on climate-smart food, Sören will only eat food that has passed its best-before date. The average Swedish household throws away 107 kg of food waste per year, completely unnecessarily. You can follow the bike ride, which starts on 27 November, at Soren's blog.
Spring's hot weekend cities
According to Resia's booking statistics, based on trips departing in March 2018, New York is the hottest weekend city of the spring. Last year's winner Miami has been pushed further down the list and Barcelona has climbed from fourth to second place. "We can see that all destinations in the top 3 are places that have recently been affected by various acts. Nevertheless, they continue to attract Swedes", says Lina Eklund, PR specialist. Europe's top 10 cake cities
On 26 November, Americans celebrated International Cake Day, so Holidu, a holiday accommodation comparison site, took a look at special and traditional cakes in Europe's major cities. Vienna, Paris and Lisbon tops the list, with Stockholm boasting seventh place and Warsaw surprises in terms of price.

Christmas present of the year
HUI reports that the electric bike has been named this year's Christmas present. According to them, the electric bike "reflects Swedish consumers' increasing climate awareness, desire to take care of their health and to be free, flexible and sometimes comfortable".

I am guilty of at least four out of seven popular search destinations. When I have time to spare (which unfortunately happens too rarely), I like to google flights and tips on attractions/ Pernilla

Haha, interesting that you feel "guilty" 😉 But at least it seems that there is something in the statistics!

Zanzibar is a dream!!! Blur surprised that Bulgaria is on the list as No. 7?! Cake countries sounded fun completely missed I who both love travelling and eating cake 😉.

I am a fan of food that has passed its expiry date. Often buy it at the Coop in the cheap box. Perfect to take home and prepare immediately and have some cheap dinners that week.
27 November 2017 - 9:39
Helena says:
We probably never buy food with an expiry date, but we don't throw away food if it still smells ok, no matter what it says on the packet. But really smart to buy food that has recently expired and is still good!

I have eaten cake in all those cake towns=)
It's surprising that Miami is the top metropolitan destination. But perhaps the statistics are not entirely reliable as people may not stay there during their journey but land there and then move on? Or maybe I've just completely misunderstood Miami as a city, maybe it's amazing. Been there?
27 November 2017 - 14:44
Helena says:
We haven't been to Miami, so I have no idea what that city is like. But I understand what you mean about the statistics. If you only look at airline tickets, it must be difficult to know if people are staying exactly there or travelling on...?

He's tough to make that trip on the e-bike in this climate!
Of the 5 cities we like Miami, have been there 2 times ðŸ™'
Take care..........

Curious / What did you like in Miami?
27 November 2017 - 16:09
Role o Carina says:
Well it was perfect for us, warm lovely climate but humid!
And then so much to see, had a rental car for 3 weeks!
Very friendly in traffic too, we were travelling so far south.
it went by car to Key West, went to Hemmingway's Bar.
and looked around at what was around!
We also visited the Ewerglades marshes and went on an excursion.
with their flying boat, saw lots of crocodiles around there!
Then we stayed one night at Tampa on the west side and went swimming.
on Clearwater Beach, great chalky white sand beach!
As said, there are endless things to see and do there, car is a must!
The second time we were there we did Orlando and Disney World!
You should spend at least a couple of days there in order to keep up!
Would love to go over there again, we were there in '89 and '92.
Have a good time and travel there.....You won't regret it 🙂.

Tear race with the motorhome would not be so bad... But then the best before date applies. For the cake pieces that is! ?

Haha, that would be a fun theme trip, chasing cakes in different countries 🙂 .

So cycling in these areas with an electric bike this time of year is really an (ambitious) nightmare, at least in my eyes. I have read that the electric bike became this year's Christmas present. An expensive one to say the least, I must say.
Had a good laugh at the cakes, sorted by calories - hahaha;-)
Great to see Gdansk and Bulgaria in the top seven!
27 November 2017 - 18:43
Helena says:
I would not go on such a bike ride now, I can promise ... but you have to be impressed that there are enthusiasts! 🙂

Firstly, one can only give a thumbs up to Sören Kjellqvist and his bike ride. How does one come up with such an idea?
The seven top destinations were indeed a colourful mix and a list of Europe's cake cities, well, I can't even comment on that...
27 November 2017 - 19:13
Helena says:
Haha, yes you can really wonder how the discussions went before coming up with such an idea ...! But everyone who does something that is good for the globe is just to be praised 🙂 .

I don't understand the point of an electric bike, I think a regular bike provides exercise (I've tried the electric bike, but it's not my thing. The exercise almost disappears).
As for cakes, I have tried them in every city except Warsaw. My favourites are in Stockholm and Vienna.
As far as destinations go, Bulgaria surprises me as I have visited for skiing, summer and spring. I wouldn't go back. The Maldives I can definitely imagine visiting again and also Bali. But a little surprising to me is that Gdansk is on the list. But taste is divided. Maybe that's a good thing.
Weekend cities and Miami....Yes, people have different opinions. Feels like a long way from a weekend (I've been there several times, but it doesn't feel like there will be any more visits).
Always fun to read about so-called trends and what "people" think. It's good that you know.
