On a normal weekday, Peter and I had lunch together and took a walk among the ships on Norr Mälarstrand in Kungsholmen, Stockholm. We hadn't really expected it to snow. across the board, but maybe it gives a bit of a winter feel to the pictures?
The ships at Norr Mälarstrand
We like to walk around among all the ships that line the quays in Helsinki. Stockholm. Each ship has its own history and personality. Some are new and some are really old. Some are well-maintained, while others have fallen into disrepair. Every ship has a story - whether it's a cargo ship or a passenger sloop or a luxury yacht. This time we braved the storm and strolled along Norr Mälarstrand.
Ships with history
Some of the ships at Norr Mälarstrand have a sign that allows you to read more about what they have been through. Others are members of the Stockholm Ship Association, and can therefore tell their story online. Like Fritz, for example, which is shown at the top of this post.
Fritz was built in 1908 in Gothenburg and has been both a tugboat and "auxiliary boat" (whatever that is?) for the Coastal Artillery. Fascinating to think about what these boats have once been through! Here are some more pictures from the ships at Norr Mälarstrand.
We wish you a great Lucia!
In fact, it is Lucia today and we wish all readers a really nice Lucia! Here on the blog nothing happens more than some snowy boat pictures, but feel free to look at Facebook or Instagram... you might get more of a Lucia feeling! Are you planning to celebrate Lucia today and if so, how?
Inga Magnusson says:
What a nice boat parade you offer. But this is not at your jetty but on the other side of the water, on Kungsholmen?

Helena says:
Exactly, this is not at our marina. It's on Kungsholmen, but not exactly across the water from us, but sort of on the other side of Kungsholmen.

FlyingDryden says:
Have a good Lucia too! Looks really cold and raw in Stockholm. 🙂
13 December 2017 - 7:39
Helena says:
Thank you and you too! I like it when there is snow, but the worst thing is when it is around 0... 😉.

Kenneth Risberg says:
Fun with different boats and their history.
Here it has also snowed and turned cold, looks like we may have a white Christmas this year.
Tonight there will be some Lucia celebrations and tomorrow a Christmas table at the Air Force Museum in Linköping.
Happy Lucia to you!

Have a nice Lucia you too! Here in Helsinki we will go to the coronation of Lucia in the cathedral - can be really nice!
13 December 2017 - 8:45
Helena says:
Thank you!!! And wow, crowning Lucia in the cathedral, that sounds like something really special!!!!

Ditte says:
Thanks for the trip here! And of course it is nice to walk along the quays in Stockholm and look at all the boats that are here. Extra fun also to read about their history.
As for Lucia, it feels a bit distant here in Torrevieja, but there will be lunch with friends and maybe some gingerbread with the coffee.
However, I stayed up and watched Lucia from Kungsholm church on TV.
Wishing you a happy Lucia day.

Helena says:
I can understand that Lucia feels a little distant when you are in southern latitudes! Here it is a little snow and a few degrees below zero today.

Mr Frank Olsen says:
Lots of wonderful nostalgia in those old boats. I love those !
Every year here in Stavanger we have a vintage boat festival where hundreds of old boats come; passenger boats, tugboats, sailing ships and steamboats of all sizes 🙂 A fantastic sight!
Have a good Lucia day everyone!

Fun with a vintage boat festival! I would like that! Wishing a nice Lucia!

Mr Steve says:
Imagine how much old boats have to say. I wonder what will be on the sign of your houseboat in 100 years.
Thank you for reminding me that today is Lucia, I had missed that.
13 December 2017 - 10:47
Helena says:
Yes, right? The thing is that our boat is probably already 100 years old, but its history is a bit vague. We have only heard that it was once a passenger sloop ...
13 December 2017 - 15:55
Nils-Åke says:
No mailboxes for these boats? Is it only a vintage boat museum?
13 December 2017 - 10:59
Helena says:
I don't think you can write here. But you can stay and sleep in your boat, as long as you have your mail somewhere else. The boats have different owners, and I don't really know anything about how they are used ...

Lena in Wales says:
Lovely winter pictures!
Here in Wales we have also had a lot of snow, believe it or not! But now it's raining, burrr!
I have a little story for you. Maria Lejerstam (Swedish father) lives in Wales. She speaks some Swedish. She was the first to cycle to the South Pole. A wonderful girl who I have met a few times. Feel free to google her, she is also in Wikipedia. Maybe something to write about.
Lucia is not celebrated in Wales, so it's quiet here. Have watched some Swedish TV. Love Lucia!!!
Happy Lucia to you!

Helena says:
Wow, cycling to the South Pole!!!? What can I say, what a thing! Thanks for the tip, will check her out! 🙂 Hope you have a nice Lucia even if you are not in Lucialand!

BP says:
Love these old boats. Imagine how much they could tell you if they could talk. I/we have done the walk a few times, but never during winter. So thanks for that experience - in front of the screen;-)
13 December 2017 - 17:21
Helena says:
That's what I think too, that the boats carry a lot of history. And the "walk" was in some ways probably more comfortable at home in front of the computer 😉 .

Role o Carina says:
Nice old boats you show in the snowy weather in the city! 🙂
I watched a bit of Lucia on the tin this morning.
Take care.......

Welcome home! Skeppsholmen is a favourite! Malaga? (Or is there a place somewhere in the world. Called Magala that I don't know about ...? ;))
