Do you know what was the most Googled topic in 2017? We present what Swedes googled the most during the year, among other things related to travelling. We also give Santa Claus some tips on where to find Swedes this year when he hands out his Christmas presents. We are also testing a new way of presenting our travel news. We have received feedback that the news feels a bit impersonal. So today we'll be presenting more personal reflections and only our own photos. What do you think - lift or diss?

Most Googled in 2017

Google has released its 2017 search trend statistics. "With over 55 million searches a day across Sweden, the lists give us an insight into some of the major events, people, phenomena and issues that defined the year," says Andrea Lewis Åkerman of Google Sweden.

Travel-related searches include getting married in Las Vegas, how long it takes to get a passport, how many countries there are in the world and what 'farang' means. Here are the top searches in each area.

  • How question: How do you make slime?
  • What question: What does despacito mean?
  • Who question: Who is the SR profile?
  • Why question: Why do we celebrate Easter?
  • Person: Martin Timell
  • Most trending: Fidget spinner
  • TV and radio: SKAM
  • Food: Chocolate balls

Easter doesn't seem quite relevant at the moment, but we have previously written about why we celebrate Easter

Where Santa finds Swedes

Many Swedes celebrate Christmas at home, but there are also many who go away for the holidays - either abroad or within the country. According to booking statistics from Booking.com, the following destinations and types of accommodation are most popular over Christmas. We ourselves have celebrated Christmas abroad many times, and once we met Santa in Sälen.

  • Abroad: Copenhagen, Bangkok, London, New York, Miami
  • Sweden: Stockholm, Arlanda, Gothenburg, Malmö, Västerås
  • Accommodation in Sweden: Hotel, hostel, bed & breakfast, guest house, apartment

Increased tax on new mobile homes

The Caravan Club of Sweden writes in its newsletter that the Swedish Parliament will decide before Christmas on the new tax proposal that will apply to cars registered from 1 July next year. The decision means dramatic tax increases for new caravans in the first three years.

The aim is to use carrots and sticks to encourage people to buy more environmentally friendly vehicles. However, the Caravan Club believes that the opposite may be true for motorhomes, as the newest motorhomes are the best in this respect. What is your view on this?

New ship wines at Viking Line

On 1 January 2018, Viking Line will have new ship wines on the shelves in the duty-free shops, restaurants and bars on board the company's seven ships. For the period 2018-2019, an organic French red wine, an Australian white wine, an Italian sparkling wine and a genuine champagne are now presented. According to Viking Line, the interest in wine has increased among customers, and therefore they are investing in quality, but at the same time at reasonable prices.

The last time we travelled with Viking Line was when we did a day cruise to Åland 2016 to celebrate Peter's mum's 80th birthday. Of course, the quality of food and wine matters on such a trip!

Finland and Norway better at digitalisation

Sweden falls behind both Finland and Norway The survey is based on responses from more than 3,000 CEOs and CFOs in the private and public sector, in small and medium-sized enterprises. Among other things, Finland is the best when it comes to digitised invoice management. The only thing we are best at in Sweden is automated payments. Digitalisation is coming fast now, so we think it's important to keep up!
