In co-operation with Aqua Dental
Do you ever think about dental care while travelling? If there is one thing we have learnt over the years, it is to be more and more careful with our teeth. This is always true, of course, but feels extra important when you're going on a longer trip. Who wants a toothache while travelling?
Going to the dentist regularly
Brushing and flossing are great, but the best way to avoid unpleasant surprises is to visit your dentist (and dental hygienist) regularly. If something is wrong, you have the chance to detect it in time, before it becomes unpleasant and expensive. And yes, in this case we speak from experience.
We don't want to go into the details, but someone in the family (wonder who?) waited a little too long for that dental appointment and then it got ugly... and yes, expensive!
Perhaps going to the dentist less often worked for him when he was younger, but conditions change with age. Peter says that after the age of 50 it is yet more important to visit both dentists and dental hygienists regularly.
Dental care before travelling
Whether you need dental care before travelling depends of course, but if you're going on a longer trip, it's not a bad idea to check your teeth beforehand! When we travelled for a year around Europe in 2015, I (Helena) made sure to book a dental appointment before we left.
Of course, there are dentists abroad too, but you want to avoid dental problems while travelling. Besides the fact that there are more fun things to do on holiday, it's not always easy to know how it works or where to go ...
Aqua Dental
We have now tried to make a visit to the Aqua Dental in Stockholm, more specifically at their clinic on Norr Mälarstrand in Kungsholmen (they have several). First of all, we must say that it felt really nice to step in here! The clinic is small and the staff is really super nice.
We have made one visit to the dentist and one to the dental hygienist and we are very satisfied. They both took their time and told us about each tooth. When we left, we felt that we had more information than we had ever received before from a dentist. In fact, Peter has already signed up to be called again next time.
What is your relationship with the dentist? Are you good at getting away or do you prefer to wait until it is unavoidable?
Ruth in Virginia says:
Twice a year there will be cleaning. Hard as nails!!!
At almost 90, I have my own teeth and no teeth.
artificial. A pair of gold crowns at the back.
Sweated through surgery to remove two wisdom teeth,
that grew crooked, but otherwise it has only been soft stuff.
And now it's after midnight, so it's gonight for you in the boat!
But first I have to brush my teeth 🙂 .

Nice job to have all the teeth left! Worth striving for I feel 🙂

So far, I have been to the dental hygienist once a year. As the years go by, you need to check your teeth more regularly, taking into account any older repairs.
As far as the dental hygienist is concerned, it is not with any great pleasure that you go there, but it is better than the dentist drilling and repairing your teeth.

Helena says:
I agree that you need to walk a little more often over the years. And after all, it will be more unpleasant if you go infrequently 😉.

Important to look after your teeth! My good friends who travel around the world several times a year, they always book a dental appointment here at home first.
I have a standing dental hygienist in the spring and a dentist in the autumn. Works great.

Smart to book a dental appointment before travelling! 🙂 And good with standing times so that it happens!

Ama de casa says:
I have an extreme fear of dentists. The public dental service up in Skellefteå probably scared a whole generation, I think. Eventually my mum got me a private dentist and he gave me Valium. I was very calm and slept for three days after the visits. Haha.
The times I have moved, I have waited a long time before visiting the dentist. After moving to Stockholm, it took five years. Many people said: "I have a very nice dentist, here is the number". Did I call? Nicke said no. Eventually I met a dental nurse in a pub ( 🙂 ) who said the same thing. But then I gave her my phone number and asked the dentist to call me. After that, I went every year as I was called.
Here in Spain it also took a couple of years, then an old filling started to bother me and finally I realised that the terrible toothache would not go away by itself (I hoped for a long time... 😉 ). Now I get a new appointment every time I have been there.
If I am called or have an appointment, I go. I can even change an appointment. But to call voluntarily "just because!"? It sits low and far inside 🙂
PS: Now I haven't had a hole for many years, and the worst thing is when the drill comes out. Then I start crying. Yep. Mature.

Ugh how hard it is to have such a fear of the dentist! I actually had it when I was younger (after a miserable time with braces that tightened too quickly) but it's better now. However, I would like to avoid major procedures ... if possible. How good with the dentist who called you up! 🙂

Ooops? Where did my comment go?

The comment ended up in spam for some reason... but it's saved now! 🙂

Now I've posted a long (probably TOO long) comment twice - probably ended up in the trash... Also, the blog tells me that
"You're posting too fast - take it easy" so I'm going to beep away from here.

Thankfully, an appointment with a great dentist arrives in my mailbox every autumn. I agree that the teeth need more attention with age and now, unfortunately, the ignorance of youth is starting to cause suffering.
Unfortunately, toothaches and other problems seem to come on suddenly regardless of whether or not you go to the dentist, but if you've done the best you can, just keep your fingers crossed when you go.

Twice a year I go to the dental hygienist. Then I get an "invitation" for a check-up from the dentist once a year. As you say, it is important to "maintain" your teeth regularly. You have it again when you get older. Especially we smokers easily get ugly brown plaque. It always feels so clean in the mouth after a "cleaning".
PS. Why do most dental practices invest in aquariums? I've never understood it. They say that goldfish have a calming effect on humans, but they just make me angry - the fish, that is. DS.

Helena says:
Why aquariums? Haha, you might ask that! Not a clue...!

Have since many years my dentist in Fuzeta, Algarve. Portugal.
Half the price but above all twice as good.
She fixes everything, in Sweden the dentist checks the status but the hygienist fixes the tartar.
Two tariffs!

I now have an incredibly good dentist in Spain and he replaced a great one here in Sweden who retired. Both my current Spanish dentist and the Swedish dentist I had for many years are "worth their weight in gold". I have had a fear of dentists since I was a child and both of these have made me come voluntarily. Well, I have been called - but the treatment and commitment is so fantastic. Really personal! (Ama and I have a common Spanish dentist)

For me, going to the dentist regularly is a matter of course. Who wants to walk around with unclean teeth? Or who wants to lose teeth? Nope, it's so important to take care of it, I think!
