This week we can present the big winners and losers of the travel destinations in 2017. We can also tell you that Swedes like to go by train to the mountains and that Apollo is opening another direct charter line to Albania, this time from Gothenburg. In addition, there will be the latest news on both conference trips and training trips.

Winners and losers in 2017
Swedes like to travel and in 2017, holiday trips abroad broke all previous records. The total number of bookings increased by 14.6 per cent compared to 2016, according to a Sifo survey by Ticket. Here are the winners and losers among travel destinations in 2017:
- Weekend city of the year: Amsterdam (+37 per cent)
- Climber of the year: Paris (+47 per cent)
- Holiday country of the year: United Kingdom (+27 per cent)
- Holiday country rocket of the year: Italy (+38 per cent)
- Sun and sea rocket of the year: Split (+38 per cent)
- Loser of the yearAntalaya (-12 per cent)
Lisbon hot for conference travel
Experiences by the Mediterranean are the most attractive when Swedish companies organise conferences abroad. Palma de Mallorca is by far the hottest, coming out on top as a conference destination (+13 per cent), but it is Lisbon that is the big winner, more than doubling its volumes. This is according to new booking statistics from Resia Företag. Here are the top 5 conference destinations:
Popularity of travelling by train to the mountains
Three out of four people choose the train as their mode of public transport when going on a skiing holiday in Sweden. This is according to a Sifo survey from SJ. 74 per cent choose the train, followed by flights (33 per cent) and buses (21 per cent).
The main reasons for choosing the train are that it is convenient (49 per cent), environmentally friendly (42 per cent) and easy (35 per cent). "Travelling by night train to the mountains with SJ is both convenient and easy. It's a great advantage to arrive rested and head straight to the ski slopes," says Karin Starkman Ahlstedt, communications strategist at SJ.
Gothenburg gets direct flights to Albania
Apollo expands its focus on Albania with direct flights between Landvetter and Tirana. Apollo has already announced that they are starting charter with direct flights to Tirana from Stockholm and Copenhagen. At the same time, Apollo presents eight new hotels in the summer town of Durrës in central Albania. If you want to go to the charter resort of Saranda, it is already possible to fly to Corfu or Ioannina in Greece, and then continue with a transfer.
Exercise profiles attract training holidays
Swedes want to exercise while travelling, but not on family holidays, according to a Sifo survey from Resia. Exercise is preferably done on pure training holidays together with a well-known profile that can encourage and inspire. The trend is strong and Resia will therefore run training holidays with profiles such as Malin Ewerlöf, Petra Månström and Ida B Olsson. The most popular forms of exercise on the trip:
- Varied training
- Running training
- Skiing/swimming/climbing
- Strength training/crossfit
- Yoga/meditation

Lena - good for the soul says:
I have never been to Amterdam. It's on my wish list, for sure.
Taking the night train to Åre was surprisingly comfortable and smooth. A little unfamiliar with the tilting carriage, which made me wake up from time to time.
Have a great start to the week!

Amsterdam is a very nice city! I haven't travelled in a sleeping car for a long time, but did it sometimes when I was younger and liked it! 🙂

I made a brief stop and revisit in Amsterdam on my way to Mauritius a couple of weeks ago. Admittedly only for an afternoon and morning but still. A lovely city somehow. 🙂

I was just about to write that I would never go on a training trip, but then I saw that "Skiing" was included. Now I feel a little proud (even though I am better at riding the lift up than getting down on the skis 😉 ).
A whole bunch of years ago, we took the night train up to Åre with Anders' job at the time. Very comfortable and good. There was only one problem - when we got on the train, all our sleeping cars were double booked. Then it turned out that the other half of the train was completely unbooked, so the conductors organised it all by moving some people around.
When we arrived at the hotel and had been there for several hours, someone suddenly said: "Where is Roger?". Just then he came in the door and was quite cheerful. His train carriage had been disconnected in Östersund. Haha! And then because it was an organised group trip, he had no idea where we would stay either, so he had wandered around by taxi in Åre to several places before he found the right one 🙂 Well, it was before the time of mobile phones... 😀.

You have really embraced this with training trips 🙂 And haha, poor Roger! Snopet to ride the night train and get disconnected! ?

The fact that the UK is this year's holiday destination comes as a pleasant surprise given all the attacks in the UK. So we don't let ourselves be intimidated.
The loss of Antalya is logical when you consider the political situation.
I know who Malin Ewerlöf is, but have never heard of Petra Månström and Ida B Olsson. Training with feelers - well...

Helena says:
All statistics indicate that attacks are no longer a deterrent, at least from what I've seen. And I can say that I haven't heard of any of the training profiles, but that may be because I don't keep up with the training 😉.

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
I understand that many people choose the train on their way to a skiing holiday. I myself have only travelled by night train to Kiruna in the summer to hike in the mountains. When you realise how far it is up there, it is an incredibly good solution (if you do not go by motorhome (summer time) and experience a lot along the way).

Helena says:
I agree that trains are convenient when travelling north. It's been a long time since I've travelled that way, but I've taken the train both for skiing holidays and up north in the summer.
