Game of Thrones in Northern Ireland
Game of Thrones is an American television series based on the novel series 'A Tale of Ice and Fire' by author George R.R. Martin. When filming Game of Thrones, several different countries have been used as backdrops, including Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Spain and Morocco. And of course... Northern Ireland!
Northern Ireland is full of filming locations, including scenes that take place in and around the UK. Winter coat, The Wall, Iron Islands, The Stormlands and Dragonstone. I Belfast There's also a giant film studio where lots of scenes for the upcoming season are shot. According to our guide in Belfast, "anyone with a beard" can get a job as an extra.

Visiting Game of Thrones filming locations
- Travelling here: You can fly to Dublin in Ireland or to Belfast in Northern Ireland. We flew directly from Stockholm Arlanda to Dublin with SAS, which took just over 2.5 hours. From Dublin we took a bus to Belfast. The buses leave from Dublin airport, take about 2 hours and are modern and comfortable.
- Getting around: You can hire a car or campervan (choose a small one!) to travel around and see Game of Thrones filming locations in Northern Ireland. We rented a motorhome from the company Bunk campers. Read more about travelling by motorhome in Ireland and Northern Ireland. There are also many different companies that organise special Game of Thrones tours, such as for example Giant Tours Ireland.
- Accommodation: We stayed mostly in campsites during our tour of Northern Ireland. In Belfast we can recommend Bullitt Hotel, which is nice, relaxed and in a good central location.
- Consider: Northern Ireland is part of Great Britain but is located on the island of Ireland. Tourists can get help from tourist offices in both Ireland and Northern Ireland. If the UK leaves the EU, Northern Ireland will also leave the EU. Northern Ireland isBritish pounds and you need adapters for electrical plugs.
- See more: There is much more to see while you are in Northern Ireland, such as Belfast, the rope bridge Carrick-a-Rede and the rock formations Giant's Causeway.
- Read more: You can find more information on filming locations and tours at Ireland.com and Discover Northern Ireland. Here you can find more information on the TV series.
Ama de casa says:
I see. Just to confess again. I've never seen that show.
Hmm... We travelled in similar tracks as Titanic last summer, but with a happier ending. Then "Ullared" is the "series" I would most like to see the filming location for 😀.
Have a nice Saturday!

Very nice to hear that there was a happier ending to your trip compared to the Titanic! 🙂

Perhaps a trip with my daughter?
I haven't travelled for a film, but in Transylvania we travelled a bit in the footsteps of Dracula.
And the trip I would like to make is a Jane Austen/Pride and Prejudice trip in England.

Helena says:
I've been keen on Transylvania for a while, sounds really exciting!

Let's face it, we haven't seen Star Wars or Game of Thrones (the interest is simply not there). However, we saw a lot of that tourism in Dubrovnik, guided walks to the filming locations of the series.
But we wouldn't turn down a trip to the home of the 'hobbits' in New Zealand.

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
What an elaborate and good post.
Let's face it: I haven't seen a single episode of Game of Thrones (or Star Wars).
However, we saw a lot of "Game of Thrones tourism" in Dubrovnik with guided tours to filming locations.
Wouldn't turn down a trip to the home of the 'hobbits' in New Zealand.
26 May 2018 - 14:30
Helena says:
Yes, Dubrovnik is also a very famous filming location when it comes to Game of Thrones! We have been to New Zealand (fantastic!) but unfortunately we missed the hobbit houses that you can see there.

Anna in front of the TV says:
So cool! I have only seen to season five but would love to visit these places. Was The Lord of the Rings also filmed there somewhere? Or parts from it. Or maybe just New Zealand.
26 May 2018 - 15:38
Helena says:
In some places we actually said "this feels like a perfect location for Lord of the Rings". But I think those films were shot in New Zealand.

Fantastic guide to filming locations for those who have seen the show! I have to show my youngest son who has seen all the episodes and is even rewatching them.
I've only seen half an episode, haha: the first one! Then I switched off. It was a bit too uncomfortable for my taste ... But I've realised that there must be something extra when so many people are watching. Let's see if I give it another chance. 😉
26 May 2018 - 20:22

People have different tastes when it comes to film and TV. I myself think the series is fantastic! 🙂

Now I have not seen a single episode of Game of Thrones. I am as blissfully ignorant of that series as I am of Star Wars;-) But the views you show are no less impressive for that. Absolutely wonderful pictures even without the TV series:-)
